Saoutchik, the French coachbuilding name reported to have closed in 1955, is back in the spotlight with a modern Mercedes-AMG SL63 styled to evoke the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. This is a contemporary reinterpretation—not a factory-built return of the historic 300 SL.
Which French coachbuilder is returning?
It is Saoutchik, a French coachbuilder whose name is associated with bespoke automotive bodywork. Carscoops reports that the company was founded in 1906 and went bankrupt in 1955. Those dates frame the long gap behind the revival story; “seven decades” is a rounded description of the interval between the reported closure and the name’s reappearance in 2024.
Carscoops credits designer Ugur Sahin with the design. That attribution is the outlet’s reporting; the available reports do not establish a direct project statement from Saoutchik or Sahin.
What does the Saoutchik revival involve?
Hagerty reports that the Saoutchik name returned in 2024 on a contemporary Mercedes-AMG SL63 reimagined to resemble the classic Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. The project therefore uses a modern car as its basis and draws on the appearance of a historic model.

Is Saoutchik making a new Mercedes 300 SL?
No. The reported project is based on a Mercedes-AMG SL63 and styled as a tribute to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. It is not evidence that Mercedes is manufacturing the original 300 SL again.
