A 2012 report based on Danbury, Connecticut, assessor records described David Letterman’s collection as 28 cars and two motorcycles, including ten Ferraris and eight Porsches. The report tied the vehicles to more than $1.2 million in assessed value on the city’s 2011 grand list—not a current market valuation. No current inventory or present-day value is established here.
What the 2012 report said Letterman had
Brian Koonz’s 2012 report, carried by SFGate from the Connecticut Post, said Danbury assessor records listed 28 cars and two motorcycles stored in a local warehouse. The account named ten Ferraris; a related inventory list counted eight Porsches. Those figures describe a historical snapshot, not a verified list of vehicles Letterman owns today. Read the 2012 report.
The report’s more-than-$1.2-million total came from Danbury’s 2011 grand list assessment. Municipal assessment is not the same as an appraisal or a sale-price estimate, so it should not be read as the collection’s current worth.
Which Ferraris were named?
The 2012 account identified four Ferraris among the highest-assessed personal cars in the reported inventory. Their assessment standing does not establish that they would be the collection’s most valuable cars at auction today.

The report did not provide current sale comparisons for these specific cars. Auction prices for other examples would not establish the value of Letterman’s individual vehicles.
What else was in the reported collection?
Beyond the Ferraris and Porsches, the historical inventory account listed four Austin Healeys, two Honda motorcycles, and a Chevy pickup. It also named one vehicle each from Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, MG, Volvo, and Pontiac. The account did not identify exact models for every make, so those entries cannot reliably be made more specific. The 2012 inventory report is the basis for these counts.

What can be said about the collection now?
The 2012 report is the detailed public inventory described here; it does not prove that Letterman still owns the listed vehicles or that the collection remains the same size. A 2025 CBS interview listing confirms that Letterman discussed his longtime interest in racing and co-ownership of Rahal-Letterman-Lanigan Racing, but it does not update his private car inventory. CBS interview listing.
Letterman described having “a small but important collection of German, British and Italian cars” in a 1994 Playboy interview, according to a third-party-hosted transcript. That remark is historical and does not confirm the present contents of his collection. 1994 interview transcript mirror.
