Samsung reported up to 800 km for a 2020 all-solid-state prototype, while Samsung SDI’s separate nine-minute result means charging a cell from 8% to 80%. Samsung SDI’s solid-state program targets mass production in 2027.
The headline joins two different Samsung announcements: research into a high-energy all-solid-state battery and a later fast-charging cell technology. Neither reviewed official source verifies a retail EV that travels 600 miles and charges fully in nine minutes.

Key takeaways
- According to Samsung’s April 2020 announcement, the all-solid-state prototype offered up to 800 km of reported driving range, not a verified 600-mile production-EV rating.
- According to Samsung SDI’s November 2024 explanation, the nine-minute result means charging a battery cell from 8% to 80%, not charging an EV from empty to full.
- Samsung’s 2020 range research and Samsung SDI’s later fast-charging announcement describe separate technology efforts; no reviewed official source combines both specifications in one production battery.
- According to Samsung SDI’s December 2024 technology report, its all-solid-state battery is rated at 900 Wh/L, a volumetric energy-density figure rather than a vehicle range rating.
- Samsung SDI’s all-solid-state program remains under development, with pilot-line activity and customer samples documented before a stated 2027 mass-production target.
Does Samsung really have a 600-mile EV battery?
No. The official Samsung material reviewed does not verify a 600-mile production EV battery. Samsung reported up to 800 km for a 2020 all-solid-state prototype, and 600 miles is approximately 966 km, so the 600-mile headline is neither the same figure nor an EPA-certified vehicle result.
The 2020 announcement described research from Samsung’s Advanced Institute of Technology and Samsung R&D Institute Japan. The announcement presented the prototype’s range as a potential result in the reported battery context, not as the tested range of a named production car. The announcement also did not establish a retail battery pack, vehicle model, warranty, or independent regulatory range rating.

A claim that Samsung has already produced a 600-mile EV battery therefore overstates the evidence. A more accurate description is that Samsung reported an all-solid-state battery prototype with up to 800 km of driving range, while Samsung SDI separately developed high-rate charging technology.
Can Samsung’s solid-state battery charge in nine minutes?
Not according to the evidence available in the reviewed Samsung announcements. Samsung SDI’s nine-minute claim applies to charging a battery cell from 8% to 80%; the announcement does not say that Samsung’s 2020 solid-state prototype can charge from empty to full in nine minutes.
An 8%-to-80% charging window starts with a partially charged cell and ends before the cell reaches 100%. The result is therefore not equivalent to a full-charge time. A reader also cannot safely multiply or divide the nine-minute figure to estimate a 0%-to-100% time because charging rates can change across the charging window, and the reviewed material does not provide a complete charging curve.
Samsung SDI attributed the fast-charging result to low-resistance materials, optimized lithium-ion travel paths, and electrode-structure technology. Those details describe a fast-charging cell approach; they do not establish the performance of a complete vehicle battery pack, the charger power required, or the charging time of a retail EV.
Samsung SDI said it planned to incorporate fast-charging technology into a battery by 2026. The company also described a future commercialization scenario in which an EV could charge in five minutes and travel 300 km. Those statements are plans or projections, not proof that a consumer EV with those specifications is available.
What is the difference between Samsung’s range claim and its nine-minute charging claim?
The range claim comes from a 2020 all-solid-state prototype announcement, while the nine-minute claim comes from a separate Samsung SDI fast-charging cell announcement presented at InterBattery 2024. The two claims should not be combined into one production-battery specification.

What did Samsung’s 2020 all-solid-state prototype actually report?
Samsung-affiliated researchers published the peer-reviewed Nature Energy paper High-energy long-cycling all-solid-state lithium metal batteries enabled by silver–carbon composite anodes on March 9, 2020. The research examined a silver-carbon composite layer used with an all-solid-state lithium-metal battery architecture.
Samsung’s associated announcement on April 24, 2020, reported the following prototype-context results:

| Reported item | Reported value | Correct interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Driving range | Up to 800 km | A company-reported prototype figure, not an EPA-certified production-vehicle range |
| Volumetric energy density | Up to 900 Wh/L | Energy stored per unit of battery volume, not a direct miles-of-range measurement |
| Charging cycles | More than 1,000 cycles | A reported result in the prototype context; test conditions and commercial end-of-life criteria must be specified before comparing it with warranties |
| Silver-carbon nanocomposite layer | 5 micrometers thick | A thin layer in the reported anode architecture, not the thickness of the entire battery or pack |
The silver-carbon approach was intended to address challenges associated with lithium-metal anodes, including dendrite growth. The peer-reviewed paper is the appropriate source for the architecture and electrochemical research; Samsung’s announcement is the appropriate source for Samsung’s reported headline figures.
The distinction matters because laboratory or prototype results do not automatically transfer to a production battery. A production EV would still require a manufacturable cell, a complete pack, thermal management, validated safety performance, vehicle integration, charging hardware, and a standardized range test.
How does Samsung’s all-solid-state battery work?
An all-solid-state battery replaces the liquid electrolyte used in a conventional lithium-ion battery with a solid electrolyte. Samsung SDI says the design is intended to improve stability and energy density, while its anode-less approach reduces anode volume and makes room for more cathode material in a given volume.
The 2020 silver-carbon research and Samsung SDI’s later anode-less development should not automatically be treated as the same commercial cell. The 2020 paper examined a silver-carbon composite anode in a lithium-metal architecture, whereas Samsung SDI’s later program describes an anode-less design. Both belong to Samsung’s broader solid-state research and development story, but the reviewed sources do not establish that a production vehicle will use the exact 2020 prototype architecture.
Solid-state technology may offer advantages, but the technology is not a guarantee of zero fire risk, unlimited cycle life, low cost, or immediate mass production. Battery safety depends on the complete cell, pack, materials, manufacturing process, monitoring system, crash protection, and operating conditions.
What does Samsung SDI’s 900 Wh/L figure mean for EV range?
Samsung SDI’s 900 Wh/L figure describes volumetric energy density: how much energy the battery stores in a given volume. The figure does not directly state how many miles an EV can travel because vehicle range depends on the usable pack energy, battery mass, aerodynamics, vehicle size, temperature, tires, speed, and test procedure.
Samsung SDI said in December 2024 that its all-solid-state battery reached 900 Wh/L and described that figure as 40% higher than prismatic batteries then in mass production. That is a Samsung SDI company-reported comparison, not an independent vehicle test. The claim also uses Wh/L, not Wh/kg, so it cannot by itself establish pack weight or the energy available per kilogram.

When will Samsung solid-state batteries be in cars?
Samsung SDI has stated a 2027 target for mass-producing its all-solid-state battery, but the reviewed sources do not verify a specific production-car launch date, price, model, or market availability.
Samsung SDI began launching a 6,500-square-meter all-solid-state pilot line in Suwon in March 2022. Samsung SDI said it supplied samples to customers in 2023. Its 2025 sustainability report says prototype samples were delivered to major customers in December 2023 and A-samples were supplied in the second half of 2024, while retaining the 2027 mass-production objective.
| Date | Development milestone | Status indicated by Samsung SDI’s materials |
|---|---|---|
| March 2022 | 6,500-square-meter pilot line in Suwon began launching | Pilot-line development, not documented volume production |
| 2023 | Samples supplied to customers | Customer-sample stage, not retail vehicle availability |
| December 2023 | Prototype samples delivered to major customers | Prototype-sample stage, according to the 2025 report |
| Second half of 2024 | A-samples supplied | Advanced development sample stage, not a documented production car |
| 2027 | Target for mass production | Roadmap target, not a guaranteed launch date or consumer delivery date |
Samsung SDI also presented a broader battery lineup at DIFA 2024 in its October 2024 press release. That lineup announcement does not document a retail EV combining the 600-mile and nine-minute claims.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why is nine-minute cell charging different from nine-minute EV charging?
Nine-minute cell charging is different from nine-minute EV charging because the cell must be built into a pack, the pack must be cooled and controlled, and the vehicle must receive sufficient power from a compatible charger.
Samsung SDI identifies lower internal resistance, shorter ion-transport paths, and electrode-structure technology as contributors to its reported charging result. The practical outcome would also depend on the battery pack’s thermal-management system, the vehicle’s voltage architecture, the battery-management system, the charger’s power delivery, and the charging infrastructure available at the location.
Even if a future Samsung cell reaches the company’s stated charging target, deployment would require a compatible vehicle and high-power EV charging infrastructure. Samsung’s reviewed announcements do not identify a consumer connector, charger specification, or current retail vehicle that enables the nine-minute result.
The nine-minute statement should therefore be read as a cell-technology demonstration or company-reported capability within a specified 8%-to-80% window. It should not be rewritten as a guarantee that an owner can arrive at any public charger, plug in for nine minutes, and receive a predictable amount of usable driving range.

“SAMSUNG SDI’s readiness for mass-producing next-gen products such as all-solid-state battery is well underway as we are set to lead the global battery market with our unrivalled ‘super-gap’ technology.”
— Yoon-ho Choi, CEO of Samsung SDI, in Samsung SDI’s March 5, 2024 InterBattery 2024 press release
That statement is a company executive’s promotional description of the program. It supports the fact that Samsung SDI was presenting the technology as a serious development effort, but it does not guarantee production timing, cost, vehicle integration, or consumer availability.

The second statement clearly identifies a battery cell and the 8%-to-80% window. It is an official Samsung SDI description, not an independent test of a production EV.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What would need to be proven before Samsung could claim a 600-mile, nine-minute production EV?
A credible production claim would need evidence across the complete vehicle, not just an impressive cell number or prototype announcement.
- Range: An independently documented vehicle test, preferably a regulatory or standardized range rating, with the usable pack capacity and test procedure identified.
- Charging: A complete charging curve that states the starting and ending state of charge, charger power, voltage, current, battery temperature, and whether the result applies to one cell or the complete vehicle pack.
- Battery identity: Evidence that the range battery and the fast-charging battery are the same cell chemistry, architecture, and production program rather than separate demonstrations.
- Cycle life: Test conditions and the definition of end of life, because a claim of more than 1,000 cycles cannot be compared meaningfully without knowing the retained capacity and test protocol.
- Safety: Complete-cell and pack validation under abuse, crash, thermal, and operating conditions. Less liquid electrolyte is not the same as a guarantee of zero fire risk.
- Manufacturing: Proof of repeatable production yield, cost, supply capacity, and a vehicle program. A 2027 target is a roadmap milestone rather than proof of volume production.
- Infrastructure: Confirmation that compatible chargers can deliver the required power to the vehicle in the markets where the EV is sold.
Can current EV owners use Samsung’s announced battery?
No retrofit or replacement path for a current EV is documented in the reviewed Samsung material. Samsung has not identified a consumer vehicle, pack format, connector, charger specification, or retail replacement battery for the all-solid-state or nine-minute technologies discussed here.

Owners should not buy a generic charging cable, adapter, or home charger expecting it to enable Samsung’s announced performance. Charging hardware is selected around a vehicle’s connector, onboard systems, voltage, current limits, and charging protocol; Samsung’s prototype and development announcements do not provide the specifications needed for a compatible consumer purchase.
Is the Samsung 600-mile, nine-minute battery claim real?
The underlying Samsung battery research and Samsung SDI fast-charging work are real company-reported developments, but the combined headline is misleading. The reviewed evidence supports an 800-km all-solid-state prototype claim from 2020, a separate 8%-to-80% nine-minute cell-charging claim from 2024, and a 2027 mass-production target for Samsung SDI’s all-solid-state program.
The evidence does not support saying that Samsung currently sells a production battery or EV that travels 600 miles and charges fully in nine minutes. Until Samsung or an automaker identifies one production cell, one vehicle, a complete charging curve, and an independently verified range result, the two headline figures should remain separate.
