For the 2025 U.S. model year, the IIHS names 10 midsize SUV entries as Top Safety Pick+ and three as Top Safety Pick. These awards make a useful safety shortlist, not a ranking of every SUV or a guarantee about a particular crash. Check the exact model year, build date and configuration in the IIHS and NHTSA records before choosing a vehicle.
Which 2025 midsize SUVs earned IIHS awards?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) award list identifies these 2025 midsize SUVs. The award tier reflects whether a model meets specified test and equipment thresholds; it does not establish that one award winner is safer overall than another.

Use the IIHS 2025 midsize SUV award list to verify an individual vehicle. The page also includes awards spanning 2025–26 and models awarded only for 2026, so its vehicle-specific entry matters more than a model name in a general list.
What do the 2025 IIHS awards measure?
Both 2025 award tiers require good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side tests, acceptable or good standard headlights, and acceptable or good pedestrian front crash prevention. The distinction is the updated moderate overlap front test: Top Safety Pick+ requires a good rating, while Top Safety Pick allows an acceptable rating.

IIHS updated that test to include a second dummy seated behind the driver, with measurements focused on common rear-seat injuries. Its described scenario has a vehicle strike an equal-size, equal-weight vehicle at 40 mph, with 40% of the front widths overlapping. The rear dummy represents a small woman or a 12-year-old child. This is a controlled laboratory test for comparing vehicles, not a prediction of what will happen in every real-world crash.
For 2025, the original moderate overlap test was phased out of the award rules. Adding the rear-seat dummy makes protection for back-seat occupants more visible in the award decision; it does not mean the award evaluates child-seat compatibility. IIHS says that, regardless of a vehicle’s result in the updated test, the second row remains the safest position for children under 13. See the IIHS explanation of its 2025 award requirements.

How to compare crash-test results before buying
- Confirm the exact IIHS entry. Match the model year and check any build-date restrictions. A badge or award listing for a nameplate may not apply to every vehicle bearing that name.
- Look beyond the award badge. Review the underlying crash-test and crash-prevention results relevant to your concerns. The award summarizes thresholds across several criteria; it is not a complete ranking.
- Check the exact vehicle in NHTSA’s ratings database. Search the current record for the model year and configuration you are considering. Do not infer a star rating from an IIHS award.
- Assess practical fit separately. Seating, cargo space, powertrain and other everyday needs are not measured by the cited safety awards, so compare those against your own requirements.
- If children will ride in the SUV, plan for the second row. Follow the vehicle and child-seat manuals for installation and fit; an IIHS award is not a child-seat fit certification.
How IIHS awards differ from NHTSA stars
NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program rates vehicles on a one-to-five-star scale, with five stars highest. It describes frontal, side and rollover crash scenarios and separately verifies some driver-assistance technologies. IIHS award tiers and NHTSA star ratings are separate assessments, so report and compare them independently.
In an October 23, 2024 announcement, NHTSA said its selected model-year 2025 vehicles, together with previously tested models with no significant changes, would represent approximately 87% of the new-vehicle fleet. That is an expected program-coverage figure, not the share earning five stars, and the announcement is not a completed rating table for every SUV. Consult the NHTSA announcement for the scope of that testing program, then look up the vehicle’s current result in NHTSA’s ratings database.

Which 2025 midsize SUV has the best crash-test ratings?
The IIHS award list does not name a single safest winner among these models. Top Safety Pick+ indicates that a vehicle met a more demanding threshold than Top Safety Pick in the updated moderate overlap front test, but neither tier orders vehicles within the tier or combines all possible safety considerations into one score. To compare two specific SUVs, check their individual IIHS results and current NHTSA ratings for the exact model year and configuration.
