FlexRay är ett digitalt fordonsnätverk som låter flera styrenheter (ECU:er) utbyta data enligt en gemensam tidsplan. Nyckeln är att kommunikationen återkommer i cykler: vissa meddelanden får reserverade tidsluckor, medan en valfri del kan hantera händelsestyrd trafik med prioritet. Noderna synkroniserar sina klockor så att de följer samma tid.
Vad är FlexRay?
FlexRay är ett kommunikationssystem för elektronik i fordon, inte en särskild bilfunktion eller ett diagnosuttag. Det kopplar samman elektroniska noder, däribland styrenheter, så att de kan skicka och ta emot information. ISO beskriver systemet som avsett för avancerade fordonsstyrsystem och anger bland annat cykelbaserad, deterministisk meddelandetransport och en gemensam tidsbas (ISO 17458).
En användbar förenkling är att tänka på nätverket som en återkommande tidtabell: vissa avgångar är reserverade för bestämda noder och en begränsad del kan användas för flexibel, prioriterad trafik. I ett verkligt fordonsnätverk konfigureras cykeln i förväg; liknelsen beskriver inte alla protokolldetaljer.
Hur är en FlexRay-cykel uppbyggd?
Kommunikationen delas in i periodiskt upprepade cykler. Den statiska delen och nätverkets vilotid ingår alltid. Den dynamiska delen och symbolfönstret kan konfigureras till efter nätverkets behov. Enligt National Instruments fastställs cykellängden när nätverket utformas och är typiskt 1–5 ms; det är ett typvärde, inte ett krav för varje installation (NI:s FlexRay-översikt).

Statisk del: bestämda tider för bestämda ramar
Varje statisk slot ligger på en bestämd plats i cykeln och är tilldelad en nod. När sloten kommer kan den noden sända sin ram. Om noden missar tillfället får den vänta till nästa cykel. En tom slot blir inte automatiskt tillgänglig för andra noder. Det ger regelbundet uppdaterade data en förutsägbar plats i tidsplanen.
Dynamisk del: prioriterad, händelsestyrd trafik
Om den har konfigurerats följer den dynamiska delen efter den statiska. Den använder minislotar och prioritering för ramar som skickas vid händelser snarare än enligt samma fasta återkomstschema. Segmentet har en begränsad längd, så mängden trafik som ryms under en cykel är också begränsad. Det betyder inte att varje dynamisk ram alltid levereras vid en bestämd tidpunkt.

Symbolfönster och vilotid
Symbolfönstret kan användas för särskilda symboler, exempelvis signaler för att väcka nätverket eller markera starten på den första cykeln. Vector beskriver bland annat en wake-up-symbol och en collision-avoidance-symbol för dessa ändamål (Vector: Communication Cycle). Under nätverkets vilotid sänds inga ramar; tiden kan bland annat användas för att korrigera klockorna.
Hur håller noderna samma tid?
Varje nod har en egen oscillator, och deras klockor kan därför driva isär. FlexRay använder kända tidpunkter för statiska ramar och synkroniseringsramar för att uppskatta skillnaderna och justera lokala klockor. I den metod Vector beskriver kan mellan två och femton noder konfigureras som synkroniseringsnoder. Korrigeringen använder fault-tolerant midpoint (FTM): uppmätta avvikelser sorteras och extrema värden tas bort för att minska påverkan från kraftigt avvikande klockor (Vector: Synchronization Method).

Den gemensamma tiden är central för att noder ska kunna följa samma schema. ISO räknar också upp uppstart, felhantering och väckningsfunktioner bland protokollets tjänster. Protokollspecifikationen version 3.0.1 beskriver synkroniserings- och uppstartsindikatorer i ramhuvudet och kopplar ram-ID:n till sändningsslotar; den arkiverade kopian är daterad oktober 2010 (FlexRay Communications System Protocol Specification v3.0.1).
Vad skiljer FlexRay från CAN?
En viktig skillnad att förstå är tidsåtkomsten. FlexRay kan reservera statiska slots i en återkommande cykel, medan dynamisk trafik får konkurrera om en begränsad del med prioritering. Den konstruktionen passar behov där schemaläggning och förutsägbarhet är viktiga. CAN är däremot inte ett enda oföränderligt prestandatal som FlexRay kan jämföras med i alla sammanhang.

I ett faktablad från augusti 2004 angav NXP FlexRays bruttodatahastighet till 10 Mbit/s och hävdade att den gav ungefär 20 gånger högre nettobandbredd än CAN-protokollet som då användes i avancerade fordonsstyrsystem. Det är en daterad jämförelse i 2004 års kontext, inte ett mått på dagens CAN-nätverk eller på applikationens nyttodata (NXP:s faktablad, augusti 2004).

ISO anger avancerade fordonsstyrsystem som målområde. FlexRay utvecklades i en period då tillgänglighet, tillförlitlighet och större datamängder i fordonsstyrning var viktiga drivkrafter; en SAE-publikation från 2003 lyfte särskilt fram chassi- och drivlinekontroll (SAE-publikation, 3 mars 2003). Den historiska bakgrunden visar inte hur många moderna bilar som använder FlexRay, och den säger inte att protokollet finns i alla moderna bilar.

FlexRay är i första hand relevant för fordonsutveckling, systemintegration och laboratorietest, inte som en funktion som bilägaren behöver använda. Det finns utvecklingskort, nodtransceivrar och specialiserad testutrustning:
- Infineon listar ett AURIX TC336-utvärderingskort med FlexRay-anslutningar för utveckling och test (KIT-A2G-TC336-5V-TRB-S).
- NXP dokumenterar TJA1083G som en FlexRay-nodtransceiver kompatibel med ISO 17458-4:2013 och avsedd för system på 2,5–10 Mbit/s (TJA1083G).
- National Instruments listar FlexRay-gränssnitt och PXI-moduler för simulering, övervakning och validering av fordonsnätverk (NI:s FlexRay-produkter).
Det här är specialistkomponenter och testverktyg, inte vanliga OBD-skannrar. FlexRay ska inte heller förväxlas med CAN eller OBD-II: de är olika delar av fordonskommunikation och diagnos.
