Rudolf Diesel devised and patented a heat-engine concept, then worked with engineers at Maschinenfabrik Augsburg to turn it into a functioning engine. His application came in 1892, the patent was granted in 1893, and the first working diesel engine followed in 1897. The invention was a process, not a single moment—and the engines used today are not simply unchanged copies of Diesel’s original design.
Who was Rudolf Diesel?
Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel was a German engineer and inventor whose work became associated with the engine that bears his name. He developed the engine at Maschinenfabrik Augsburg, an industrial manufacturer later known as MAN. The Deutsche Biographie records his life as 1858–1913 and places his engine work at the Augsburg factory.
How was the diesel engine developed?
Diesel’s contribution began as a proposed process for a more rational, efficient heat engine. A patent application described the concept; it did not mean a working prototype already existed. Developing the proposal into an operating engine took several years of work with engineers at Maschinenfabrik Augsburg.
| Milestone | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1892: Patent application | Diesel applied for a patent for a proposed “new rational heat engine,” according to the Deutschlandmuseum. |
| 23 February 1893: Patent granted | German Imperial Patent DRP 67 207 was granted, according to the Technik Museum Speyer. The museum gives its title in translation as “Working method and design for internal combustion engines.” |
| 28 January 1897: Functioning engine | The first functioning diesel engine was set in motion after development and trial and error at Maschinenfabrik Augsburg, according to the Deutschlandmuseum. |
The distinction matters: Diesel is rightly credited with the concept and patent, but a patent is not the same thing as a working machine. The functioning engine emerged from a collaborative industrial development effort. Nor does that make Diesel the sole designer of every later diesel engine; subsequent designs evolved beyond the original engine.

What fuel did Rudolf Diesel’s engine use?
The Deutschlandmuseum reports that an early engine model used peanut oil and won a prize at the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris. That is evidence of an early fuel and demonstration, not proof that every diesel engine—or even every later version of Diesel’s own engine—ran on peanut oil. The museum also notes subsequent use of diesel engines in lorries, locomotives, and ships.

In September 1913, Diesel boarded the Dresden for the crossing from Antwerp to Harwich. He disappeared during the voyage and was later reported missing. The Deutsche Biographie says he went overboard, while the Technik Museum says the circumstances remain a mystery. His disappearance is documented, but the evidence here does not establish a settled explanation for how or why he died.
