Both use Royal Enfield’s 648 cc twin platform, but the Bear adds a 19-inch front wheel, dual-purpose tires, longer-travel upside-down front suspension and more listed ground clearance. Those details make it better equipped for broken roads and light trails; they do not establish that it is an off-road motorcycle or universally better than the Interceptor.
What is the difference between the Bear 650 and the Interceptor 650?
The main difference is purpose and equipment. Royal Enfield describes the Bear as a scrambler based on the Interceptor/INT 650, and positions the Interceptor as a roadster with a wide handlebar and low seat. The Bear’s wheel, tire and suspension package is more suited to rougher surfaces. The Interceptor’s roadster setup and, on some India-market variants, cast-alloy wheels are oriented toward paved riding. Check the exact model year and local variant: equipment and specifications can differ by market.

Royal Enfield India product page | The Bear has the more fully documented navigation and media display package in these sources. Confirm equipment on the exact local model. |
Which one should you buy?
Choose the Bear 650 if your routes include rough surfaces
The Bear’s 19/17-inch spoked wheels, dual-purpose tires, 184 mm listed ground clearance and 130 mm-travel USD fork make its specification more accommodating for broken pavement, gravel and light trails than the roadster setup documented for the Interceptor. The manufacturer describes a more open, elbows-up riding posture. That equipment is a better starting point for uneven roads, not proof of off-road performance; there is no independent comparative test here. The US Bear FAQ also says tubeless tires are not available, which may matter if you ride far from repair support. Royal Enfield Bear 650 specifications and FAQ
Choose the Interceptor 650 if paved-road use is the priority
The Interceptor is the roadster alternative, with a low seat and wide handlebar. The cited India product page offers cast-alloy wheel variants and describes piggy-back gas-charged twin rear shocks. For commuting and touring mainly on paved roads, that roadster character may be a better fit than paying for the Bear’s scrambler-oriented equipment. Wheel and tire specifications depend on the local trim, so verify the actual bike rather than assuming all Interceptors use the same wheels.

Let fit and comfort settle the decision
On a test ride, compare seat height and shape, bar reach, low-speed balance and comfort in the posture you will actually use. If you expect to stand on the pegs on rough roads, check how natural the Bear’s standing position feels. Consider whether its tire type and lack of tubeless tires on the cited US FAQ suit your routes. A shared engine platform does not make the two motorcycles feel interchangeable.
Does the Bear 650 have more torque?
The Bear’s US product page lists 56.5 Nm at 5,150 rpm. Royal Enfield’s India Interceptor FAQ lists 52 Nm at 5,150 rpm. Those published figures favor the Bear numerically, but they come from different regional pages, so they are not a like-for-like same-market comparison. The cited figures do not establish a measured acceleration or real-world performance advantage.

How do prices compare?
There is no valid current same-date price comparison in the cited figures. Royal Enfield’s November 2024 Bear launch release gave a starting ex-showroom price of INR 3.39 lakh in Chennai; that is a historical launch price, not a current quote. The Interceptor India page accessed in 2026 listed Chennai ex-showroom prices from ₹337,909 for the variants shown. Those dates and contexts do not support a direct current price-difference calculation. Bear 650 launch release · Interceptor 650 India page

What to verify before buying
- Confirm the model year, trim and official specification sheet for your country; regional pages do not necessarily describe identical equipment.
- Check whether the local Bear tire setup is tubeless or tube-type, and whether the wheel configuration matches your intended use.
- Compare the exact Interceptor wheel variant and available electronics rather than generalizing from one market’s page.
- Test both motorcycles for seat comfort, reach, balance and the riding position you prefer.
- Get current local on-road prices and confirm service access, insurance and accessory fitment with a dealer.
Why are the Bear 650 and Interceptor so closely related?
Royal Enfield says the Bear is based on the Interceptor/INT 650 platform. The company’s November 2024 release attributes the Bear’s inspiration to Eddie Mulder and the 1960 Big Bear Run. That shared origin explains the family resemblance, while the wheel, tire and suspension choices give the Bear its scrambler role. Royal Enfield’s Bear 650 launch release
