The Royal Enfield Bear 650 is a capable scrambler if that means a characterful road bike that can handle maintained dirt roads and occasional broken surfaces—not a machine built for sustained rough trails. Its 648cc parallel twin, 19-inch front wheel and relaxed road manners make it appealing on pavement; its 214 kg kerb weight, limited suspension travel and firm rear end set clear limits off it.
What kind of scrambler is the Bear 650?
Royal Enfield introduced the Bear 650 in November 2024 as a scrambler based on its Interceptor/INT 650 platform. Its styling cues include a number board, bench-style seat and 2-into-1 exhaust, while the 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels distinguish its stance from a conventional roadster. The design draws on Eddie Mulder’s 1960 Big Bear Run win. Royal Enfield’s launch release says Mulder, then 16, won on a 500cc Fury in 4 hours and 21 minutes; those race details are the manufacturer’s account of the inspiration, not evidence of the modern Bear’s trail performance. Royal Enfield’s November 5, 2024 launch release lists five launch colors: Boardwalk White, Petrol Green, Wild Honey, Golden Shadow and Two Four Nine, the last referencing Mulder’s race number.
The manufacturer says the 2-into-1 exhaust contributes to an 8% increase in peak torque compared with other models on the platform. That is Royal Enfield’s comparative claim. The current US specification gives the Bear’s torque as 56.5 Nm at 5,150 rpm; do not treat the claimed percentage as an independently measured performance result.
How does the Bear 650 ride on the road?
Cycle News tested the Bear for 170 miles in one day, with about 168 miles on pavement, mostly twisty roads. The reviewer reported smooth power delivery, a light clutch pull, relaxed ergonomics and a seat that proved more comfortable than it looked. The bike kept pace with California traffic, including speeds around 70 mph, and the tester particularly enjoyed it on winding roads at a relaxed but spirited pace. These are impressions from a short test, not a long-term assessment or a guarantee of comfort for every rider. Cycle News’s 2025 Bear 650 review summarizes its role as: “The Bear is essentially a street bike capable of light-duty off-road riding.”

The US model uses a 648cc, four-stroke, SOHC parallel twin rated at 47.4 PS (34.9 kW) at 7,150 rpm and 56.5 Nm at 5,150 rpm, paired with a six-speed gearbox and wet multi-plate clutch. Those figures come from Royal Enfield USA’s current Bear 650 specifications. The tester’s account supports a smooth, usable road character rather than a claim of exceptional speed or sportbike-level performance.
Can the Bear 650 go off-road?
Yes, within a light-duty definition: maintained dirt roads and occasional broken surfaces are plausible uses. It is not a technical-trail or sustained rough-terrain bike. The official US specification lists 184 mm of ground clearance, 130 mm of front suspension travel and 115 mm at the rear. The 214 kg kerb weight is stated with 90% fuel and oil. Those figures, together with the road-focused test report, make the limits more useful to know than the scrambler styling alone.

Cycle News’s tester weighed 165 pounds before gear and found the rear shocks too stiff even at their softest preload setting: “The dual shocks are sprung too tightly for my 165 pounds (before gear).” The reviewer also reported that the bike’s weight and limited wheel travel left little margin on dirt and made bottoming easy. The same tester described its suitable off-pavement use as well-maintained dirt roads. That is a single reviewer’s experience, but it is a direct caution against interpreting the Big Bear Run inspiration or dual-purpose tires as proof of technical off-road capability.

Royal Enfield Australia lists an 830 mm seat height. These are source- and market-specific published figures, so they should not be blended into a single universal specification. The US product page recommends fully synthetic 10W-50 oil meeting API SL or higher and JASO MA2; confirm the manual for the exact market and model year before servicing.

In the United States, Royal Enfield’s current owner-manual index says the Bear 650 starts from $6,849. That is a starting MSRP indication, not an out-the-door quote: the US model page notes that MSRP varies by model year and dealer prices may vary, and that MSRP excludes accessories, destination and handling, tax, title, license and registration. Cycle News reported a $6,849–$7,199 range around launch; that historical range should not be used as a current local dealer offer. For India, Royal Enfield announced launch prices of INR 3.39 lakh to INR 3.59 lakh ex-showroom Chennai in November 2024. These are historical launch figures, not current India pricing. The launch release also said Wingman Connectivity was then available only in India; buyers elsewhere should not assume that service is included or available for every model year.
The US product page lists the Tripper Dash functions and switchable rear ABS. Royal Enfield’s US genuine-accessory catalog also lists Bear-specific options such as Adventure Soft Panniers, Compact Engine Guards, a Tinted Tall Flyscreen, a Headlight Grill and a Water Resistant Bike Cover. Who should buy the Bear 650?
- It makes sense if you want a relaxed, distinctive middleweight for everyday roads and backroad rides, with occasional maintained dirt-road detours.
- Look elsewhere if your regular riding involves technical trails, deep ruts or repeated high-speed impacts. The test report’s stiff rear ride, limited travel and the Bear’s weight all work against that use.
- Check fit before committing by sitting on the bike and, if available, arranging a test ride. Rider comfort varies, and the one-day review cannot establish long-distance comfort for every body size or riding style.
- Compare ownership costs carefully: local out-the-door price, accessories, warranty terms and regional equipment need dealer confirmation. The sources cited here do not establish long-term reliability, recurring ownership costs or independently measured real-world fuel economy.
