A vehicle can have excellent maximum cargo capacity but little room behind its third row, or a roomy passenger cabin but a short cargo floor.
For 2024, the answer depends on how you use the space. The Volkswagen Atlas had the most independently measured cargo room behind its second row among the midsize SUVs tested by Cars.com. The Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid had the most usable space behind the third row in that test. If you move up to extended full-size SUVs, the Chevrolet Suburban leads for maximum cargo volume, while the Jeep Wagoneer L combines a particularly roomy passenger cabin with a large cargo area.

How to compare the roomiest 2024 SUVs
There are four cargo measurements worth separating:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Behind the third row: the space available when all seats are occupied.
- Behind the second row: the third row is folded, leaving room for passengers in the first two rows.
- Maximum cargo: the published volume with the rear seats folded.
- Passenger volume: the manufacturer’s estimate of interior space for occupants.
These figures are useful, but they are not perfectly interchangeable. Automakers do not measure cargo space in exactly the same way. They may use different seat positions, include different areas beneath the floor, or calculate the space with different equipment installed. Cars.com’s independent testing is therefore useful for comparing similar vehicles, but it does not replace a test fit with your own luggage, stroller, golf clubs or child seats.

The rankings below split midsize three-row SUVs from extended full-size models. A Suburban or Wagoneer L is physically much larger than a Grand Highlander or Atlas, so putting them into one undifferentiated ranking would hide the trade-off between interior space, price, parking ease and fuel economy.
Roomiest midsize SUVs by independent cargo testing
Cars.com tested seven similarly equipped three-row SUVs and measured their usable cargo areas behind the second and third rows. Its test did not include full-size SUVs such as the Suburban, Expedition or Wagoneer L.
| Rank | 2024 SUV tested | Behind second row | Behind third row |

| 7 | Subaru Ascent Touring AWD | 22.5 cu. ft. | 9.6 cu. ft. |
*Cars.com’s published comparison identifies the tested Pilot as a 2023 Honda Pilot Elite AWD, despite the broader challenge being presented around 2024 SUVs. Its measurement should not be described as an uncontested 2024 Pilot result.

1. Volkswagen Atlas: best cargo room behind the second row
The Atlas is the independent-test winner if your typical setup leaves the third row folded. Cars.com measured 28.5 cubic feet behind the second row, more than any other SUV in its comparison. That is the most useful result for families who occasionally carry six or seven people but normally use the Atlas as a two-row hauler.
Its independently measured space behind the third row was 13.3 cubic feet, which is competitive but not the group’s best. The Atlas is therefore the strongest choice for groceries, luggage or bulky household items with the third row down—not necessarily the best choice when every seat is occupied.

2. Toyota Grand Highlander: best cargo room behind the third row
The Grand Highlander Hybrid Limited produced the best result when all three rows remained in use: 14.5 cubic feet behind the third row in Cars.com’s test. That is the key reason it is the most practical midsize choice for road trips with a full passenger load.
The Grand Highlander measured 26.0 cubic feet behind the second row in the same test. Toyota’s published figures are more generous overall: 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 57.9 behind the second row and 97.5 cubic feet maximum. The company also lists 33.5 inches of third-row legroom and describes the third row as adult-sized. The independent and manufacturer figures should be treated as separate measurements, not added together or ranked as though they came from one test.

The Palisade and Telluride were close in Cars.com’s independent measurements. The Palisade provided 24.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 11.2 behind the third row. The Telluride provided 24.4 and 12.3 cubic feet, respectively.
That gives the Palisade a small advantage with the third row folded, while the Telluride offers a little more space when all seats are up. Kia’s official SAE figures list 21.0 cubic feet behind the third row, 46.0 behind the second row and 87.0 maximum. Kia also lists 178.1 cubic feet of total interior volume. Do not compare those numbers directly with Cars.com’s physical measurements without noting the different methodologies.
4. Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder and Subaru Ascent
The Pilot, Pathfinder and Ascent were less impressive in this particular cargo test. The published Pilot result was 22.1 cubic feet behind the second row and 11.0 behind the third, although the table identifies the vehicle as a 2023 model. The Pathfinder managed 23.0 and 9.1 cubic feet, while the Ascent measured 22.5 and 9.6.

The Pathfinder illustrates why one cargo number can mislead. Its behind-second-row measurement was reasonably competitive, but its cargo area became one of the smallest in the group with the third row raised. If you regularly use all three rows, the Grand Highlander, Atlas, Telluride or Palisade are more useful starting points.
Manufacturer-reported cargo space for midsize SUVs
| Model | Behind third row | Behind second row | Maximum cargo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Grand Highlander | 20.6 cu. ft. | 57.9 cu. ft. | 97.5 cu. ft. |
| Volkswagen Atlas | 20.6 cu. ft. | 55.5 cu. ft. | 96.6 cu. ft. |
| Kia Telluride | 21.0 cu. ft. | 46.0 cu. ft. | 87.0 cu. ft. |
| Hyundai Palisade | 18.0 cu. ft. | Varies by source and trim | Varies by source and trim |
On manufacturer-reported maximum capacity, the Grand Highlander leads this midsize group with 97.5 cubic feet, narrowly ahead of the Atlas at 96.6. The Grand Highlander also has a strong official all-seats-up figure, but Cars.com’s physical test gave the third-row advantage to the Grand Highlander as well.
The Telluride’s official figures are lower with the rear seats folded, but its box shape, underfloor storage and relatively strong all-seats-up result make it more useful than a maximum-volume comparison suggests. Seat design, cargo-floor height and the shape of the opening matter when loading real objects.
Roomiest full-size SUVs
If your priority is genuine space for adults and luggage at the same time, an extended full-size SUV is in another category. These vehicles cost more, need more road and parking space, and generally use more fuel, but their longer bodies create a much larger cargo area behind the third row.
| Model | Passenger volume | Behind third row | Behind second row | Maximum cargo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jeep Wagoneer L | 179.3 cu. ft. | 42.1 cu. ft. | 85.3 cu. ft. | 130.9 cu. ft. |
| Chevrolet Suburban | Trim-specific GM figure | 41.5 cu. ft. | 93.8 cu. ft. | 144.7 cu. ft. |

Jeep Wagoneer L: the best balance of passenger and cargo room
The Wagoneer L is the clearest published choice when “roomiest” means both passenger comfort and luggage capacity. It has 179.3 cubic feet of passenger volume, 36.6 inches of third-row legroom and 42.1 cubic feet behind the third row. Its second-row legroom is listed at 42.7 inches.

The extended L body adds 14.7 cubic feet of cargo behind the third row compared with the standard-wheelbase Wagoneer. That difference is substantial: the regular Wagoneer’s published behind-third-row figure is 27.4 cubic feet, compared with 42.1 in the L. The L also lists 85.3 cubic feet behind the second row and 130.9 cubic feet maximum.
Chevrolet Suburban: maximum cargo-volume champion
The Suburban is the choice for maximum hauling capacity. Commonly published 2024 figures give it 41.5 cubic feet behind the third row, 93.8 behind the second row and 144.7 cubic feet maximum. The maximum figure is higher than the Wagoneer L’s 130.9, making the Suburban especially attractive if you frequently carry large loads with the rear rows folded.
These Suburban figures should be identified as published vehicle specifications rather than treated as directly comparable physical measurements. GM and independent testers do not always report identical cargo numbers. Still, the Suburban’s long body and very large maximum cargo area make its practical advantage clear.
Ford Expedition MAX: choose the long body for cargo
The Expedition MAX adds cargo length over the standard Expedition. Edmunds lists the standard-wheelbase 2024 Expedition at 19.3 cubic feet behind the third row, 57.5 behind the second row and 104.6 maximum. Those numbers should not be applied to the MAX.
The MAX primarily improves cargo capacity; it does not create a substantially roomier passenger cabin. Edmunds notes that second- and third-row passenger space remains close to that of large crossover SUVs. Choose it for the additional luggage floor, not because its seats automatically provide the most legroom.

Which 2024 SUV should you choose?
- For the most usable cargo behind the second row: choose the Volkswagen Atlas. Its 28.5-cubic-foot Cars.com measurement was the best among the tested midsize SUVs.
- For luggage with all three rows occupied: choose the Toyota Grand Highlander. Its 14.5-cubic-foot independent measurement was the largest in the comparison.
- For the largest published midsize cargo capacity: choose the Toyota Grand Highlander, with 97.5 cubic feet maximum.
- For maximum full-size hauling: choose the Chevrolet Suburban, with the commonly published 144.7-cubic-foot maximum.
- For adult-friendly full-size seating plus useful luggage room: consider the Jeep Wagoneer L, with 36.6 inches of third-row legroom and 42.1 cubic feet behind that row.
- For a long-wheelbase Expedition: select the Expedition MAX, but verify its exact cargo figures rather than borrowing numbers from the standard model.
What to check before buying
Take the items you actually carry to a dealer. Measure the stroller, cooler or dog crate, then check the opening height and width—not just the quoted cubic-foot figure. With three rows in use, inspect whether the cargo floor is long enough for suitcases and whether the third-row headrests or seat belts interfere with loading.
Also test the second-row seat with a rear-facing child seat installed. A generous published cargo volume does not guarantee that a child seat will leave comfortable legroom in front of it. Finally, compare the standard and extended body versions separately. The extra length of a Wagoneer L, Suburban or Expedition MAX primarily benefits cargo, while passenger space may change little.
FAQ
What is the roomiest 2024 midsize SUV?
The answer depends on the measurement. The Volkswagen Atlas had the most independently measured cargo behind the second row at 28.5 cubic feet, while the Toyota Grand Highlander had the most behind the third row at 14.5 cubic feet. Toyota also lists the Grand Highlander with the highest maximum cargo figure in this midsize group at 97.5 cubic feet.

Among the midsize SUVs in Cars.com’s independent test, the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid measured 14.5 cubic feet behind the third row. Among the full-size models covered here, the Jeep Wagoneer L is listed with 42.1 cubic feet and the Chevrolet Suburban with 41.5 cubic feet, although those are manufacturer or published specification figures rather than results from the same independent test.
Is the Volkswagen Atlas roomier than the Toyota Grand Highlander?
The Atlas had more independently measured cargo behind the second row—28.5 versus 26.0 cubic feet. The Grand Highlander had more behind the third row—14.5 versus 13.3 cubic feet—and Toyota lists a slightly larger maximum cargo capacity, 97.5 versus the Atlas’s 96.6 cubic feet.
Which full-size SUV has the largest maximum cargo capacity?
The 2024 Chevrolet Suburban is commonly listed with 144.7 cubic feet of maximum cargo space, exceeding the Jeep Wagoneer L’s published 130.9 cubic feet. Cargo methods vary by manufacturer, but the Suburban’s extended body gives it a clear maximum-hauling advantage.
The Bottom Line
For most buyers, the Toyota Grand Highlander is the best all-around answer for usable three-row space, while the Volkswagen Atlas is the better pick when the third row is usually folded. Families that need adult-sized third-row seating and a full load of luggage should move up to the Jeep Wagoneer L or Chevrolet Suburban. The Suburban has the biggest published maximum cargo figure; the Wagoneer L offers an especially strong combination of passenger room and cargo behind the third row.
Before deciding, compare the same measurement across the vehicles and perform a real test fit. “Maximum cargo” is not the same as useful space with seven people aboard.
