Rocket Cars: Blue Flame, the Records, and How They Work

Blue Flame’s 1970 Bonneville run remains the fastest rocket-car record listed by Guinness. Here’s how its measured speed compares with jet-powered Thrust SSC and disputed claims.

The fastest officially recognized rocket car is Blue Flame, which Gary Gabelich drove to a 631.367 mph (1,016.086 km/h) record for the first measured kilometre at Bonneville on 23 October 1970, according to Guinness World Records. That is different from the overall land-speed record: the faster Thrust SSC reached 763.035 mph in 1997, but it was powered by jet engines, not a rocket.

What makes a car a rocket car?

A rocket car is propelled by a rocket motor. Unlike a jet engine, a rocket carries the material it needs to produce thrust and does not depend on drawing oxygen from the surrounding air. The distinction matters when comparing land-speed vehicles: a faster jet-powered car does not become a rocket car simply because both use high-thrust engines.

Rocket-powered vehicles have served different purposes, from early experiments demonstrating the technology to purpose-built machines aimed at land-speed records. Their record claims also need to be read with care: the category, measured distance, timing method and official status all affect what a speed figure means.

How fast is the fastest rocket car?

Guinness World Records lists Blue Flame as the fastest rocket car at 631.367 mph (1,016.086 km/h), achieved over the first measured kilometre at Bonneville Salt Flats on 23 October 1970. The record was set by driver Gary Gabelich. Guinness’s record pages give the same speed in miles per hour and kilometres per hour.

Another historical account from ThrustSSC lists Blue Flame at 630.388 mph over the kilometre and 622.407 mph over the mile. Those are separate distance-based figures from a different source; they should not be merged with Guinness’s current first-measured-kilometre figure into a single supposedly interchangeable speed. See the ThrustSSC account of rocket-powered record cars for its figures and context.

Blue Flame: the landmark rocket car

Blue Flame was a purpose-built record car driven by Gabelich at Bonneville. Its rocket engine used liquefied natural gas and hydrogen peroxide. Technik Museum Sinsheim lists the vehicle at approximately 58,000 hp, a 20-second burn time and a weight of 2,950 kg. These are specifications for the museum’s displayed vehicle, not a general description of rocket cars.

Rocket-car milestones and related records

Vehicle or event Speed and category Date and context
Fritz von Opel’s rocket-equipped car 148 mph; land-speed record reported by NASA May 1928, during the Opel-RAK experiments
Blue Flame, driven by Gary Gabelich 631.367 mph (1,016.086 km/h); Guinness’s fastest rocket car, first measured kilometre 23 October 1970, Bonneville
Budweiser Rocket 739.666 mph; reported one-way claim, not an official record Guinness says the radar was not calibrated or certified and did not directly measure the vehicle
Thrust SSC, driven by Andy Green 763.035 mph (1,227.985 km/h); Guinness-listed overall land-speed record 15 October 1997; powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey jet engines

NASA describes the 1928 run as an early landmark in rocket propulsion. The Opel-RAK programme explored rocket power in vehicles and later aircraft; it was an experiment, rather than the same kind of purpose-built record campaign that produced Blue Flame. Why Thrust SSC is not a rocket car

Thrust SSC holds the Guinness-listed overall land-speed record, but it used two air-breathing Rolls-Royce Spey jet engines. Andy Green drove it to 763.035 mph (1,227.985 km/h) on 15 October 1997. That is faster than Blue Flame’s rocket-car record, but it belongs to a different propulsion category. The Guinness overall land-speed record page identifies Thrust SSC and the record speed.

Why the Budweiser Rocket’s 739.666 mph is not an official record

The Budweiser Rocket is associated with a reported one-way speed of 739.666 mph, but that number should be described as a claim, not as a ratified land-speed record. Guinness says the radar was not calibrated or certified and did not directly measure the car. ThrustSSC’s historical account also says the run did not meet established record regulations. The figure therefore cannot be compared on equal terms with the official, measured records listed for Blue Flame or Thrust SSC.

How to compare land-speed record claims

A headline speed alone can obscure important differences. Check the details attached to the number before deciding which vehicle was “fastest.”

  • Propulsion: Was the vehicle rocket-powered or jet-powered? The answer determines whether it belongs in a rocket-car comparison.
  • Category: Is the figure for the fastest rocket car or the overall land-speed record?
  • Measurement basis: Does it refer to a timed mile, a measured kilometre, a one-way peak claim or another basis?
  • Official status: Was the run measured and accepted under record rules, or is it an unratified claim?
  • Date and venue: Bonneville in 1970 and the Black Rock Desert in 1997 were different record settings, and the runs took place decades apart.

For vehicle and engineering details, the ThrustSSC engineering page describes the car’s design and record-setting context.
