For ocean views, consider the Pacific Coast corridor; for mountains, compare the Blue Ridge Parkway with the alpine roads of the West. These routes vary from roughly 50 miles to nearly 2,500, and several high-elevation roads are seasonal.
How long are some of America’s best-known road trips?
These figures come from different route references, so treat them as planning estimates, not a like-for-like survey. A route’s mileage also does not tell you how long to spend: overlooks, towns, park rules, weather and road conditions can all change the pace.

Which famous US road trip fits your interests?
For history and a cross-country journey: Historic Route 66
Route 66 is the history-first choice, running from Chicago toward Los Angeles and Santa Monica through heritage towns, diners, neon signs and remnants of the old highway. The National Park Service says the highway was about 2,400 miles long and explains how the interstate system bypassed it. It was officially decommissioned in 1985, but its cultural importance remains; 2026 is its centennial. The Associated Press reported that more than 250 Route 66 buildings, districts and road segments are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The route is too long for a single standard itinerary: the time required depends on how much of the highway you follow and how often you stop. Treat it as a multi-day, potentially multi-week journey rather than a quick drive, and decide in advance whether your priority is covering ground or visiting historic sites.
#1 Best Overall
For ocean views and coastal cities: Pacific Coast Highway
This is the headline coastal choice for beaches, cliffside views and city stops. Road Trip USA describes a roughly 1,650-mile Washington-to-California journey, but the name is better understood as a coastal corridor than one consistently signed highway. Build your itinerary around the particular states and stretches you want to see, and verify California access conditions close to departure: closures or construction can affect the drive.
For mountain overlooks and a slower pace: Blue Ridge Parkway
The 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway links Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains national parks in Virginia and North Carolina. It suits travelers who would rather stop at overlooks and take in forest and mountain scenery than make fast highway progress. The National Park Service’s advice is apt: “enjoy the view, watch the road!” Check official Parkway access information before setting out.
Rank #2
For river towns, food and regional culture: Great River Road
The Great River Road is a multi-state itinerary following the Mississippi River through communities shaped by river commerce, food, music and history. It is a flexible cultural journey, not one standardized visitor attraction or uniform road segment. Choose the states and river towns you want to visit, then check local route conditions and travel information for those segments.
For an island-to-island drive: Overseas Highway
At about 113 miles in Roamward’s 2026 comparison, this Florida Keys route is a compact choice for a memorable tropical drive. That comparison suggests a two-to-four-day trip shape, leaving time to stop along the Keys rather than treating the drive as a race from one end to the other. Check current local road conditions before travel.

For quiet history and wooded scenery: Natchez Trace Parkway
Running through Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee, the Natchez Trace Parkway is a slower, wooded alternative to busier coastal itineraries. Its appeal is a combination of history, archaeological sites and trails, with a quieter two-lane driving rhythm. It is an officially managed National Park Service route, so check current NPS conditions before choosing stops or relying on a particular segment being open.
For blues history and Southern food: US Highway 61
Known as the Blues Highway, US 61 offers a way to connect New Orleans, Delta towns and points north toward Minnesota through music history and regional cooking. It is a public highway with varied places and road conditions, not a single uniform tourism product. Pick the musical and culinary stops that matter to you, and plan each section around its local attractions.
For northern plains, lakes and mountains: US Highway 2
US 2 is a northern cross-country route concept for travelers drawn to high plains, the Great Lakes and Rocky Mountain scenery. Rather than expecting one standardized set of attractions along the full route, choose regional sections and build the itinerary around the landscapes and towns you want to experience. Check state and local road information as you plan those segments.

Roamward’s 2026 comparison lists the route at about 124 miles and suggests a one-to-two-day trip shape. That makes it a strong option when you have limited time but want dramatic geology and a scenic connection through Utah’s national-park region. Check the relevant state and park information for road conditions and access to the places you intend to visit.

For a concentrated alpine drive: Going-to-the-Sun Road
This roughly 50-mile drive through Glacier National Park is short in mileage but built around a high-impact mountain setting. It is not a dependable year-round alternative to a longer cross-country trip: opening dates and access depend on seasonal conditions and current park rules. Check Glacier National Park’s current road status and requirements before planning around the route.
For a high-elevation pass: Beartooth Highway
Crossing Montana and Wyoming, the Beartooth Highway is a short, intense scenic drive for travelers seeking alpine views and mountain-road engineering. Its high elevation makes access seasonal. Check current state highway information and relevant park notices for opening status and conditions before setting out.
For a dramatic mountain day: Trail Ridge Road
Trail Ridge Road in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains suits travelers who want a high-elevation scenic day rather than a coast-to-coast itinerary. As with other alpine routes, seasonal access matters: consult current park and state information for openings and road conditions before you travel.

Is the Pacific Coast Highway or Blue Ridge Parkway better?
Choose the Pacific Coast corridor if ocean views, beaches and coastal cities are the main draw, and be prepared to plan around the particular stretches you want to drive. Choose the Blue Ridge Parkway for a 469-mile mountain-and-forest route where overlooks and a slower pace are part of the experience. The better fit depends on scenery and itinerary, not on a universal ranking.
Which road trip can you do in two or three days?
The Overseas Highway is the clearest match if you want an island-to-island journey with time for stops: Roamward’s 2026 comparison gives it a two-to-four-day shape, so a two- or three-day version is plausible if you tailor the stops. Utah Scenic Byway 12 is another good short-trip candidate; the same comparison suggests one to two days. Going-to-the-Sun Road, Beartooth Highway and Trail Ridge Road are compact scenic drives, but their seasonal access and park or road requirements need to fit your dates. A short route is not automatically a short vacation if you are traveling a long way to reach it.
Quick Recap
Check current road conditions before you go
- For National Park Service roads: Check the relevant NPS route or park page for current closures, seasonal openings and access requirements. This applies to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Natchez Trace Parkway and Going-to-the-Sun Road, as well as park access for other mountain drives.
- For state and US highways: Check the relevant state transportation departments for closures, construction and conditions on the Pacific Coast corridor, Overseas Highway, US 61, US 2, Utah Byway 12 and Beartooth Highway.
- For flexible, multi-state routes: Check each local segment separately on Route 66 and the Great River Road; conditions and available stops vary along the way.
- For alpine drives: Confirm opening status close to travel, not just when booking. Weather and seasonal rules can make an intended route unavailable.
