Nick Mason’s car collection is best understood as a changing fleet of cars he wanted to drive and race, not as a fixed portfolio of appreciating assets. His Ferrari 250 GTO is the famous centerpiece, but dated profiles also describe prewar sports cars, Grand Prix machinery, endurance racers and modern supercars. No published source reviewed here provides a complete, independently verified inventory of what he owns today.
A collection built for driving, not just display
Mason has consistently described use as the point of collecting. In a Car and Driver interview, he said: “I never collected cars as a financial thing; I wanted to go racing, so I chose the cars I wanted to go racing with.” In a 2011 Forza interview, he added, “I have always liked the thing of using the cars myself.”

That approach explains the mix. Some cars were chosen for competition history, others for their engineering, looks or the experience of driving them. The categories overlap: a historically important racer can also be a car Mason simply wanted to use. He has also sold cars to make room or meet obligations, so any list from an older profile should be treated as a snapshot.
What is Nick Mason’s most famous car?
Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis 3757GT
The Ferrari 250 GTO is the collection’s signature car. Forza identifies Mason’s example as chassis 3757GT and says it finished third overall at Le Mans in 1962. Mason’s explanation of its appeal combines design, racing history, performance and practicality: he has praised its looks, its ability to carry luggage and its balanced behavior, which he considers approachable for an amateur driver.

The reported purchase details conflict. Forza’s 2011 account says Mason bought the car in 1973 for £35,000, while Knight Frank’s 2017 feature says the purchase was in 1977 for £37,000. Neither version should be presented as definitively settled.
Does he still race the GTO?
The interviews establish that Mason bought and used competition cars and has raced his Ferrari, but they do not establish a current schedule or prove that he still races the 250 GTO today. The safest description is that the GTO has been a driven, competition-capable part of his collection rather than a car documented only as a static investment.

| Car | What the historical profile says | Source date |
|---|---|---|
| Ferrari 512 S, chassis 1026 | Factory racer with a reported Sebring win and a role in the film Le Mans. Mason acquired the damaged car in 1980 and rebuilt it as an open Spyder after its original body was destroyed. | Forza, 2011 |
| Maserati Birdcage | Mason has called it his probable overall favorite. Car and Driver describes a long effort to get it running properly before Marino Franchitti drove it. | Car and Driver; Forza |
| 1935 Aston Martin Ulster | Described by Forza as Mason’s first race car. In 2017 he also identified the prewar Aston as important because it was the first car he raced. | Forza, 2011; Knight Frank, 2017 |
| Ferrari 312 T3 | Listed as the ex-Gilles Villeneuve Grand Prix car among the Ferraris in the collection at the time of publication. | Forza, 2011 |
| McLaren F1 GTR | Listed among the modern supercars. Mason has separately praised the McLaren F1; a road-going F1 and an F1 GTR are not the same model. | Forza, 2011; Car and Driver |
| Alfa Romeo 8C | Mason told Car and Driver that he sold an 8C to pay income tax and regretted the decision. | Car and Driver |
| Bugatti Type 35B | A Bugatti T35B appears in the 2011 list, while the 2006 snapshot mentions two Bugatti T35s. | Forza, 2011; Motor Sport Magazine, 2006 |
The wider range: from early motoring to endurance racing
Forza’s 2011 list reaches back to a 1901 Panhard B1 and includes an Alfa Romeo 8C, the 1935 Aston Martin Ulster, a 1957 Maserati 250F, a Bugatti T35B, Ferrari racing cars and the McLaren F1 GTR. That breadth matters: Mason’s interest is not limited to one marque or one decade.

- Used Book in Good Condition
The 2006 Motor Sport Magazine profile additionally reported two Bugatti T35s, an ERA, a Lotus 18, a Jaguar D-type, a Porsche 962, a Ferrari Daytona, an F40, an Enzo and a 512BB LM, among other cars. These are historical sightings from that profile, not a current garage inventory.
Competition history as a recurring thread
The sports GT and single-seater cars reflect Mason’s interest in racing provenance. Forza reported that he had entered the 24 Hours of Le Mans five times. The Ferrari 512 S, Ferrari 312 T3, Porsche 962, Jaguar D-type and Maserati 250F all represent different eras and forms of competition, while the Birdcage and Aston Martin connect the collection to cars Mason wanted to drive personally.

How large is Nick Mason’s collection?
Published estimates vary by year:
| Profile | Reported size | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Motor Sport Magazine, 2006 | Around 30 “serious” cars | A dated estimate, not a complete ownership register. |
| Knight Frank, 2017 | Around 40 cars | An approximate figure reported in that interview, not a verified current total. |
The difference may reflect acquisitions, sales or differing definitions of which cars count. It cannot be used to calculate the size of Mason’s collection in 2026.

Mason’s own comments make turnover part of the story. He has sold cars to make room and has spoken about regretting the sale of an Alfa Romeo 8C to cover income tax. That episode also shows why a previously published list should not be read as a permanent ownership statement.

His favorites can change with context. In the Car and Driver interview he called the Maserati Birdcage his probable favorite overall; the 2017 Knight Frank conversation gives special weight to both the 250 GTO and the prewar Aston Martin. These statements describe personal attachment at different times, not a single official ranking.
What is established—and what is not
- Established by the dated profiles: Mason has owned or included historically significant cars from Panhard, Aston Martin, Maserati, Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar, McLaren and others.
- Established: the Ferrari 250 GTO is chassis 3757GT according to Forza, with conflicting published accounts of when and for how much Mason bought it.
- Not established: a complete current inventory, a current total value or proof that every car in the 2006 or 2011 lists remains with Mason.
- Not established: a current market valuation for the GTO or the collection. Historical price references should not be converted into today’s values.
The most accurate answer to “What cars does Nick Mason own?” is therefore time-qualified: his collection has included the cars documented above, while its present contents are not fully disclosed by the available public profiles.
