Rivian unveiled its smaller-vehicle direction—the R2, R3 and R3X—on March 7, 2024. The company positioned the R2 as a five-seat midsize SUV, the R3 as a midsize crossover and the R3X as a performance variant of the R3. Today, Rivian publishes detailed pricing and specifications for R2, but its available official information does not establish comparable R3 or R3X details.
What are the Rivian R2, R3 and R3X?
Rivian introduced all three vehicles alongside a new midsize platform. The company described the R2 as a five-seat SUV, the R3 as a crossover and the R3X as a performance-oriented version of the R3. Rivian said the platform was intended to bring the performance, utility and range associated with its R1 vehicles to a lower price point. Rivian’s Q1 2024 shareholder letter dates the reveal to March 7, 2024.

Those descriptions are the clearest official positioning for R3 and R3X in the available material; they are not a complete specification sheet. Rivian has not established current R3 or R3X pricing, detailed specifications or delivery dates in the cited official sources. R2’s specifications should not be assumed to apply to either model.
What does Rivian currently say about R2?
Rivian’s March 2026 R2 recap describes three trim positions. Its figures are manufacturer-published estimates and specifications, not independent test results. Range depends on configuration and driving conditions; Rivian says tires, drive modes, HVAC settings, accessories and other factors can affect it.

How practical is the R2?
Rivian says R2 seats five and has rear drop glass, fold-flat rear seats and 90.1 cubic feet of total enclosed storage. The company also lists 9.6 inches of ground clearance. These are Rivian-published figures and features, not independent measurements.

Rivian lists towing capacity of up to 4,400 pounds with the Tow Package on eligible R2 configurations. Confirm package and configuration eligibility on the live product page before treating that maximum as applicable to a particular vehicle.

- Range: The 345-mile figure is Rivian-estimated for Standard RWD Long Range; the Premium figure is up to 330 miles, EPA-estimated. Neither figure is a guarantee for every configuration or driving condition.
- Driver assistance: Rivian describes these features as driver assistance, not autonomous driving. Drivers must remain attentive and ready to take control. Universal Hands-Free does not stop or slow for traffic lights or stop signs.
- Region: The R2 page shows reservations limited to the United States and Canada. Rivian said Canadian vehicle details and packages would follow closer to that market’s launch; US pricing and specifications should not be assumed to describe the Canadian offer.
- Timing: Rivian’s 2024 letter said R2 production was expected to begin in the first half of 2026. That was a historical plan, not current guidance; consult Rivian’s live R2 page for current timing and availability.
What is still unknown about the R3 and R3X?
The reveal establishes their broad relationship: R3 is a midsize crossover and R3X is its performance variant. The cited official sources do not establish current prices, full specifications or delivery dates for either one. Rivian’s R2 prices, range, power, towing capacity and timing therefore cannot be used as stand-ins for R3 or R3X.
