Rivian has started producing saleable R2 vehicles and making employee deliveries, but the claim that this is one of the fastest EV launches in U.S. history is not established by the available evidence: there is no defined measure of “fastest” or comparative launch dataset. The more useful story is that R2 is meant to widen Rivian’s market and increase its scale—and that the production capacity, customer demand and profitability needed to deliver on that strategy remain works in progress.
What has Rivian actually launched?
R2 is Rivian’s midsize vehicle program and a central part of its plan to reach more buyers than its existing R1 vehicles can. CEO RJ Scaringe has framed it as an “incredible five-passenger offroad machine” that happens to be electric, a statement of the company’s positioning rather than independent evidence of product performance.
The timing has moved from forecast to an early production milestone, but the distinction between employee and customer deliveries matters:
- Rivian’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed in 2026, said it expected customer deliveries in the second quarter of 2026. That was a forward-looking target when the filing was published.
- Rivian’s Q1 2026 earnings materials later reported that production of saleable R2 vehicles had started and employee deliveries had begun.
Those Q1 milestones show that vehicles were being built and delivered internally. They do not, on their own, establish the date or volume of customer deliveries. The timing forecast should not be mistaken for a verified customer-delivery result.

How much production capacity is planned?
Rivian’s plan combines more output at its Normal, Illinois, factory with a future Georgia facility. These are stated or anticipated capacities, not evidence of vehicles already produced at those rates.
| Facility or allocation | Stated plan | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Normal: R2 | Up to 155,000 units annually | A planned platform allocation at full rate, not achieved output. |
| Normal: R1 | Up to 85,000 units annually | A planned platform allocation at full rate, not achieved output. |
| Normal: commercial vans | Up to 65,000 units annually | A planned platform allocation at full rate, not achieved output. |
| Normal: total capacity also stated in the 2025 Form 10-K | Up to 215,000 vehicles annually | This total does not match the three platform figures above, which add to 305,000. The filing figures as summarized do not establish how to reconcile the discrepancy, so they should not be combined as if they describe one consistent simultaneous capacity total. |
| Planned Georgia facility near Social Circle | Anticipated capacity of 400,000 vehicles annually, in two 200,000-unit phases; first-line production planned for 2028 | A future plan, not operating capacity. |
R2’s strategic importance is clear even without treating every capacity figure as settled: the Normal plan gives it a substantial intended allocation, while Georgia is meant to add much larger capacity later. Building factories and installing capacity do not guarantee that Rivian will reach those rates, keep lines supplied, or find buyers for the resulting vehicles.

What does the ramp cost—and do the figures show R2 is profitable?
No. Rivian’s Q2 2026 earnings presentation attributed about $100 million in incremental cost of revenues to the R2 production ramp. In the same quarter, the company reported a $36 million automotive gross loss and $215 million in software and services gross profit. These are distinct figures: software and services profit does not show that R2 vehicles, or the automotive business, were profitable.
The presentation said the automotive gross loss improved compared with the prior-year quarter, but also identified regulatory-credit revenue and an IEEPA tariff refund receivable as factors in the comparison. The quarter therefore illustrates both the expense of ramping a new vehicle and why a single gross-profit comparison should not be read as proof that the launch has reached sustainable vehicle economics.

Can R2 deliver the volume Rivian is counting on?
In February 2026, Reuters reported Rivian’s forecast of 62,000–67,000 total vehicle deliveries for the full year. Reuters described R2 as the expected growth driver, while R1 and van volumes were expected to remain broadly flat from 2025. That range was guidance, not a completed annual result; it covers total deliveries, not R2 alone.
The market backdrop makes the ramp a demand test as well as a factory test. The Associated Press, citing Cox Automotive, reported that U.S. EV sales grew 1.5% in the first half of 2025 and Rivian had a 3% share of those sales in that period. Those dated figures are not a current market-share estimate. Rivian’s 2025 Form 10-K also said the September 30, 2025, expiration of certain federal EV tax credits contributed to demand timing volatility: some deliveries were pulled forward into Q3, followed by a corresponding decline in Q4.

A lower-priced midsize vehicle is intended to expand Rivian’s addressable market, but the available figures do not establish that R2 will reach a particular price point, capture a specific share, or offset shifting incentives and competition. Rivian’s own 2026 delivery forecast shows how much of the near-term growth case depends on getting the new vehicle into production and into customers’ hands.

The Associated Press reported a prospective Uber arrangement involving up to $1.25 billion in investment, expected purchases of 10,000 autonomous R2 robotaxis, and an option for up to 40,000 more. Initial deployments were expected in San Francisco and Miami in 2028. The investment is staged and subject to milestones and conditions; the purchases and deployments are plans, not realized revenue or vehicles already operating as robotaxis.

If carried out, the agreement could add a fleet channel alongside consumer sales. It does not remove the execution challenge: Rivian still has to scale production, satisfy the agreement’s conditions, and reach the stated deployment plans.
How to judge whether the bet is working
The launch should be judged against delivered results, not headline capacity or a speed comparison that has no defined benchmark. The clearest indicators are:
Quick Recap
- Whether customer deliveries follow the employee-delivery milestone, and when they begin.
- How actual R2 production and deliveries compare with Rivian’s stated plans, without confusing installed capacity with output.
- Whether incremental ramp costs ease as production scales and whether automotive gross results improve without relying on unrelated offsets.
- Whether total deliveries meet or miss the dated 2026 guidance, and whether the company can sustain demand as incentives and market conditions change.
- Whether Georgia progresses from an announced plan toward its planned first production in 2028.
- Whether the Uber investment and robotaxi plans advance through their stated milestones and conditions.
