The Rivian R2 Performance is listed at $57,990 and available now in the U.S., with dual-motor all-wheel drive, 656 hp, and a Rivian-estimated 330-mile range. Rivian classifies the five-seat R2 as a midsize SUV, not a compact SUV. The less expensive Premium and Standard versions are listed for late 2026 and 2027, respectively; their arrival dates and prices can change.
What is the Rivian R2 Performance?
The R2 is Rivian’s five-seat midsize electric SUV. Its Performance trim is the quickest configuration currently listed by the automaker: dual-motor AWD, 656 hp, 609 lb-ft of torque, and a claimed 0–60 mph time of 3.6 seconds. Rivian estimates 330 miles of range under EPA procedures. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent acceleration or range-test results. Rivian’s current R2 page lists the Performance at $57,990 and available now (U.S. page checked October 8, 2026).

Performance equipment listed by Rivian includes semi-active suspension, a premium interior and audio system, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a built-in Torch flashlight, rear drop glass, Dynamic Adventure Lighting with Adaptive High Beams and Matrix LED headlights, tow hooks, and 21-inch all-season wheels and tires. Rivian says a Launch Package is included for a limited time. Optional items include 20-inch all-terrain wheels, a Tow Package, Autonomy+, and a compact spare tire. Rivian’s U.S. product page currently shows three trims. Listed prices and timing are subject to change; the output figures below are Rivian’s advertised specifications, not independent test results.

What separates the trims?
- Performance: The top-output choice, with the richest listed suspension and lighting specifications, 21-inch all-season wheels, and the limited-time Launch Package.
- Premium: Retains dual-motor AWD and a 330-mile EPA estimate at a lower listed price, with 450 hp and a slower claimed 0–60 time. Listed equipment includes a premium interior with wood accents, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, Torch flashlight, premium audio, rear drop glass, dynamic lighting, tow hooks, and 20-inch all-season wheels. Optional equipment includes 21-inch all-season wheels, Tow Package, Autonomy+, and compact spare tire.
- Standard: The listed entry configuration is rear-wheel drive, with less power, range, and towing capacity than the AWD trims. Rivian lists 20-inch all-season wheels, Tow Package, Autonomy+, and compact spare tire among the options, alongside the additional drivetrain/range configurations noted above.
Does the R2’s EPA range match real-world driving?
Not necessarily. Rivian’s 330-mile figure is an EPA estimate for Performance. In an Edmunds EV Range Test reported by the Associated Press on September 23, 2026, an R2 Performance covered 304 miles. That is one outlet’s result for its test vehicle and conditions, not a guaranteed distance for every R2 or driver. Speed, temperature, terrain, wheels and tires, and climate-control use can affect the distance a vehicle covers; plan charging with a margin rather than assuming the EPA estimate will be achieved on every trip.

Edmunds, as reported by AP, listed the R2 range span as 275 miles for Standard to 345 miles for Standard Long Range, with other versions rated at 330 miles. The 345-mile figure is an EPA rating, not a real-world test result. Because configurations and official estimates may change, check Rivian’s current specifications when comparing a specific build.
Rivian R2 vs. Tesla Model Y
There is no single winner for every buyer. In Edmunds’ comparison published by AP on September 23, 2026, the Model Y had greater range in the configurations tested and a smoother ride; Edmunds judged the R2 roomier in the back, more useful overall, and capable of towing more. Edmunds’ overall verdict was a tie. Those are that outlet’s comparative findings, not a universal recommendation.

The comparison was published by the Associated Press, summarizing Edmunds’ findings. It does not establish how every Model Y configuration compares with every R2 configuration.
What to know about launch timing and charging
Rivian’s Q1 2026 earnings presentation said saleable R2 production had begun, employees had received first deliveries, and customer deliveries were expected in the coming weeks. That dated company update said Performance debuted in spring 2026, Premium was expected late in 2026, and Standard in the first half of 2027. It also described an additional approximately $45,000 Standard version expected to begin deliveries in late 2027. The live product page checked October 8, 2026, is the more current source for its displayed prices and timing: it shows Performance available now, Premium for late 2026, and Standard for 2027. Rivian’s March 7, 2024 announcement described native NACS charging and CCS charging with an adapter, and projected 10%–80% DC fast charging in under 30 minutes. Those were announcement-era statements and projections, not current independently measured charging results. Confirm the charging hardware, adapter arrangements, and current charging specifications for the vehicle being ordered before relying on them for trip planning. The announcement also described powered rear glass that drops into the liftgate and both rows folding flat. Rivian’s original R2 announcement is dated March 7, 2024.

- Choose Performance if maximum listed power and quickest acceleration matter most and its higher price fits your budget. Its 330-mile estimate should not be treated as a promise of 330 miles in ordinary driving.
- Consider Premium if you want dual-motor AWD, the same listed 330-mile estimate, and much of the premium equipment at a lower displayed price, and can wait for its listed late-2026 timing.
- Consider Standard if the lowest listed starting price and rear-wheel drive meet your needs, and its listed 275-mile estimate and lower towing rating are adequate. Rivian also shows longer-range and AWD options, so compare the exact configuration rather than assuming every Standard has the entry specifications.
For practical equipment planning, Rivian lists a compact spare tire as optional rather than standard across these trims. The current page does not establish third-party spare fitment, so verify compatibility with Rivian before buying an aftermarket wheel or tire. A Tow Package is also an option shown on the page; check the order configuration and final vehicle rating rather than assuming the maximum tow figure applies to every build.
