Rivian reported a $1.46 billion net loss for the second quarter of 2024, which ended June 30. That historical figure is not the company’s latest quarterly loss. The Volkswagen relationship behind the headline combines a vehicle-software joint venture with investment: some money has been received, while other financing remains conditional.
What the $1.46 billion loss tells you
Rivian’s Q2 2024 net loss was $1.46 billion, compared with a $1.45 billion net loss in Q1 2024. TechCrunch reported that Rivian ended the quarter with $5.76 billion in cash and cash equivalents, including the first $1 billion from Volkswagen. The loss and cash balance are different measures: the former is a period’s accounting result; the latter is a balance at quarter-end. TechCrunch’s August 6, 2024 report covered the results.

The operating backdrop
Rivian was transitioning from first-generation R1 trucks and SUVs to revised versions it described as simpler and cheaper to build. At the time, it expected its R2 SUV to arrive in 2026 and CEO RJ Scaringe set a goal of reaching positive gross profit by the end of 2024. Those were plans and targets stated in 2024, not guarantees of results.
Rivian also reported $17 million in regulatory-credit sales in Q2 2024 and was developing a charging network. Neither item, on its own, resolves the scale of the company’s losses.

What the Volkswagen partnership is meant to do
The 2024 announcement described a proposed Volkswagen-Rivian joint venture to develop electrical architecture and software for vehicles across both companies. That work is aimed at the underlying systems that connect and control vehicle functions, rather than simply a badge or a vehicle-sharing arrangement.
In TechCrunch’s August 6, 2024 report, Rivian chief software officer Wassym Bensaid said engineers were working closely with Volkswagen Group on integration analysis and on scaling Rivian’s technology across the group’s vehicle portfolio. Those comments described the companies’ view of progress at that time; they were not an independent assessment.

Development progress reported in 2025
In a November 12, 2025 corporate update, Volkswagen Group said the joint venture, RV Tech, was developing software-defined vehicle architecture for Volkswagen Group and Rivian, with a team of more than 1,500 employees. It described planned winter testing with Volkswagen, Audi and Scout reference vehicles. Volkswagen also said Rivian intended to use the technology in R2, R3 and R3X and update its existing fleet. These were plans reported on that date, not proof that every vehicle deployment had taken place.
Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume and Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe characterized the venture positively in that company release. Their statements are executive views, not independent evaluations of RV Tech’s performance. Volkswagen Group’s November 2025 update provides its account of the development program.

Which Volkswagen money Rivian received—and what remained conditional
Rivian’s 2025 annual report separates completed transactions from possible future financing. It describes Volkswagen’s initial $1.0 billion equity investment, a further $1.3 billion paid in November 2024 for licensed intellectual property, and a $1.0 billion equity tranche received on June 30, 2025. These are distinct payments with different forms and timing; they should not be treated as one unqualified cash commitment.
The annual report also says additional equity investments were subject to milestones and regulatory clearances. Separately, Volkswagen had committed a $1.0 billion term-loan facility to the joint venture, available for a draw during October 2026 subject to customary funding conditions. If funded, the proceeds would be passed through to Rivian for general corporate purposes. Rivian said there was no assurance the conditions would be met. A loan is also not equity: if drawn, it would create repayment obligations and covenants.

The partnership has execution and governance risks
Rivian identifies RV Tech as a primary development partner for vehicle electrical architecture and software. The companies share board representation and co-CEO appointments, and Rivian says disagreements could delay decisions. Software quality or delays could also affect Rivian’s vehicle business. The venture may create development and revenue opportunities, but it makes execution and coordination material to Rivian’s plans. Rivian’s 2025 annual report describes the financing terms and risks.

| Measure | Q2 2024 | Q2 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Net loss | $1.46 billion, reported for the quarter ended June 30, 2024 | $837 million net loss attributable to common stockholders, reported for Q2 2026 |
| Adjusted EBITDA loss | Not stated in the cited Q2 2024 coverage | $379 million, versus $667 million in Q2 2025; company-defined non-GAAP measure |
| Cash or liquidity | $5.76 billion cash and cash equivalents at quarter-end, including the first $1 billion from Volkswagen, as reported by TechCrunch | $5.310 billion cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments at June 30, 2026; $5.846 billion total liquidity including revolver capacity; $7.163 billion pro forma available liquidity including approximately $1.317 billion net proceeds from a July equity offering |
The Q2 2026 loss is not directly interchangeable with adjusted EBITDA loss, and the three 2026 liquidity figures have different components. In particular, the $7.163 billion pro forma figure includes proceeds from an offering after the quarter ended; it was not the June 30 cash balance. Rivian’s Q2 2026 results release reports the financial measures.
Deliveries, guidance and services revenue
Rivian produced 12,613 vehicles and delivered 12,194 in Q2 2026. It said deliveries exceeded its quarterly outlook of 9,000–11,000 and raised full-year delivery guidance to 65,000–70,000. That guidance is management’s forecast, not a completed result.
For full-year 2026, the company also guided to an adjusted EBITDA loss of $1.80–$2.00 billion and capital expenditures of $1.70–$1.80 billion. Rivian said its improved EBITDA outlook reflected regulatory-credit revenue and volume, partly offset by raw-material, memory and logistics costs. These are guidance figures, not actual full-year outcomes.
Rivian’s Q2 2026 investor presentation reported $515 million in software and services revenue, up 37% year over year, and $215 million in gross profit. The company attributed much of the revenue growth to RV Tech electrical-architecture and software-development services, alongside repair and maintenance services and Autonomy+. This shows that software and services had become a material revenue contributor by that quarter; it does not establish that the partnership will be profitable over the long term. What to take from the headline
“Rivian lost $1.46B in Q2” refers to Q2 2024, not the latest quarter. Volkswagen’s role is both industrial and financial: RV Tech is developing vehicle architecture and software, while Volkswagen’s investment has supplied capital to Rivian. The partnership’s value depends on execution, and not all announced financing is cash already in hand. Rivian’s later results show progress in deliveries and software-and-services revenue, alongside continuing losses, investment needs and financing conditions.
