Rivian’s first publicly announced Rivian Foundation grant cohort, disclosed in September 2024, awarded just over $10 million to 41 organizations, according to TechCrunch. That initial round is distinct from the foundation’s later cumulative giving: its current homepage says it has donated more than $20 million to more than 60 nonprofits since its establishment in 2023.
What Rivian announced in September 2024
Rivian published its foundation launch announcement on September 23, 2024. TechCrunch reported the next day that 41 organizations were included in the first publicly disclosed grant cohort, with awards totaling just over $10 million. The largest reported award was $2 million to The Nature Conservancy; the Ocean Resilience and Climate Alliance received a reported $1 million. Those figures describe the initial cohort, not the foundation’s total giving to date. TechCrunch’s September 24, 2024 report covered the roster and amounts.

What the foundation funds
Rivian’s launch announcement organized the foundation’s priorities under “Safeguarding a Healthy Planet” and “Advancing a Better Energy Future for All.” The work areas it named included healthy lands and waters, equitable access to nature, natural climate solutions, clean-energy equity, and addressing challenges associated with transition minerals. Rivian’s September 23, 2024 announcement introduced those priorities.
The foundation’s current grant records show awards addressing a range of these themes. For example, its database lists a $200,000, one-year award to RESOLVE in April 2026 for model restoration projects related to legacy mine waste, and a $175,000, two-year award to Trout Unlimited in Washington that month for abandoned Bodie Mine remediation. These are later awards, not members of the 2024 cohort. The official grantee database provides award amounts, durations, locations, dates, and descriptions.

How the foundation is connected to Rivian
Rivian says it dedicated 1% of its equity at the time of its November 2021 IPO to establish a philanthropic platform. The Rivian Foundation was established in 2023 and is an independent 501(c)(3) private foundation, legally separate from the automaker. The equity commitment explains its origins; it does not mean the foundation was already operating in its current form at the time of the IPO. Rivian’s launch announcement describes the commitment and initial structure, while the foundation’s homepage dates its establishment to 2023.
In a May 2026 interview, Rivian described the foundation as having its own board. The interview names RJ Scaringe, Anisa Kamadoli Costa, Rose Marcario, and Ed Norton as board members and Heath Nero as executive director. Rivian says the executive director recommends grants for board approval. How grantmaking is divided, according to its leaders
Rivian Foundation leaders described three approximate annual grantmaking channels in the May 2026 interview:

The percentages are approximate figures given by foundation leadership, not audited measures. As one program example, leaders said support for GRID Alternatives was intended to fund rooftop solar serving 900 homes and 10 community centers. How much has the foundation given now?
The foundation’s current homepage, checked October 4, 2026, reports more than $20 million donated to more than 60 nonprofits since its establishment in 2023. It says current grantmaking focuses on the United States and Canada. This cumulative figure includes later giving and should not be confused with TechCrunch’s just-over-$10-million account of the initial 2024 cohort. The foundation homepage carries the current total and geographic focus.
The database also records individual grants beyond the first round, including $60,000 two-year awards to Urban Rivers in Illinois in August 2026. The homepage’s U.S. and Canada focus describes the overall stated geography; individual grant records can have broader or global scopes. Readers can use the database’s amount, term, location, award date, and description fields to distinguish grants by size, geography, and purpose. The grantee database lists those award details.
