The outlet said most affected employees were on the commercial team, which is responsible for sales and service operations. TechCrunch also reported that affected employees would be eligible for rehire and were encouraged to apply for other open roles.
The reported figure is approximate. The available reporting does not establish an exact headcount, where affected employees worked, severance terms, or the full scope of the commercial team. Those details should not be inferred from the approximate number.
How did the September cut compare with the earlier 2025 reduction?
TechCrunch said the September layoffs followed a separate cut in late June 2025 that affected around 1% of Rivian’s workforce and focused on manufacturing. The outlet reported that Rivian had approximately 15,000 employees worldwide at the start of 2025; that approximate company-wide figure should not be used to calculate a precise percentage for the September layoffs.

TechCrunch also noted workforce reductions in early 2024 and April 2024, so the September 2025 action was not Rivian’s only prior reduction.
What did “ahead of the R2 launch” mean in 2025?
When TechCrunch published its report, Rivian was preparing to launch the R2 in 2026. That wording describes the timeline at the time of the layoffs, not the R2’s current status. On April 22, 2026, Rivian said customer production had officially started at its Normal, Illinois, plant, with first customer deliveries expected later in the spring. CEO RJ Scaringe said, “We are really excited to be producing R2 for our customers,” in the company’s update.

Rivian’s Q2 2026 results release says external R2 deliveries began June 9, 2026. The company reported producing 12,613 vehicles and delivering 12,194 in Q2 2026, and said the R2 production ramp added $100 million in cost of revenues compared with more normalized production levels. These are Rivian-reported figures.
