The appointment is a signal of Rivian’s interest in AI expertise—not evidence of a Cohere-Rivian deal or proof that Rivian’s AI plans have delivered commercial results.
What Rivian’s board appointment means
Rivian’s April 21, 2025, SEC filing says the company increased the size of its board and elected Gomez as a Class II director, effective immediately. His initial term was set to expire at Rivian’s 2026 annual meeting.

Rivian’s 2026 proxy statement later described Gomez as a director since April 2025 and said his leadership experience and AI expertise qualified him to serve. At the June 22, 2026, annual meeting, shareholders elected him to a term through the 2029 annual meeting.
Who is Aidan Gomez?
Rivian’s 2025 filing identifies Gomez as Cohere’s co-founder, CEO and board member since September 2019, and as a former Google Brain researcher. His background connects Rivian’s board appointment to both AI research and leadership of an AI company.

Where Rivian says it is using AI
Rivian’s subsequent materials describe several distinct areas of AI work. They are company descriptions of products, plans and capabilities; they should not be read as independent verification of performance.
Driving assistance and autonomy
At its December 11, 2025, Autonomy & AI Day, Rivian outlined work on compute, autonomy and a shared data foundation. The company said its Universal Hands-Free feature covered 3.5 million miles of roads across the U.S. and Canada. That is a company-reported coverage figure, not a measure of safety or driving performance.
Rivian also described an in-house autonomy platform and driving model. The company’s later R2 technology overview, published June 26, 2026, said R2 has 200 sparse TOPS of edge AI compute for its in-cabin experience. That specification is Rivian’s stated figure, not an independent assessment of what the vehicle can do.

In-vehicle voice assistance
On May 12, 2026, Rivian announced Rivian Assistant and Rivian Unified Intelligence. The company said Assistant was rolling out to compatible Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles for owners with Connect+ or an active trial. Availability depends on vehicle compatibility and rollout.

Rivian describes Unified Intelligence as a shared AI foundation for experiences across its vehicles, service operations and business. Its Autonomy & AI Day materials presented the underlying compute and data approach as part of the company’s strategy. These are Rivian’s stated plans and descriptions, not proof that every intended capability is already available.
Service diagnostics
Rivian also places AI in service and diagnostics, describing it as one of the areas that can draw on a common intelligence foundation. The company’s materials do not establish an independently measured business impact from these efforts.

Why the appointment is a signal, not a result
Adding an AI company’s CEO to the board supports the interpretation that Rivian values AI expertise at the board level. Rivian’s later product announcements make that interest more concrete, spanning autonomy, in-vehicle interaction, software infrastructure and service. But the appointment itself does not establish a contract with Cohere, Cohere technology in Rivian vehicles, or successful commercial outcomes from Rivian’s AI plans.
Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said at Autonomy & AI Day: “Rivian’s vertical integration strategy uniquely positions the company to lead the charge into an AI-defined future.” That is Scaringe’s strategic view, not an independently verified conclusion.
