Set your riding mower to the height recommended for your grass species, then check the actual blade height on level pavement with a ruler or deck-height gauge. During each mowing, remove no more than one-third of the standing leaf. If the lawn is overgrown, raise the deck and work down toward the target over successive cuts instead of scalping it.
Choose a cutting height for your grass
There is no single best deck setting for every lawn. Grass species, local conditions, season, and mower capability all matter. These ranges offer a starting point; use local extension guidance where available.

| Grass or lawn type | Suggested mowing height | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Kentucky bluegrass | 2–3 inches | University of Illinois Extension, current guidance: source. |
| Perennial ryegrass | 2–3 inches | University of Illinois Extension, current guidance: source. |
| Tall fescue | 2.5–3.5 inches | University of Illinois Extension, current guidance: source. |
| Bermudagrass | 0.5–1.5 inches; Texas A&M gives 1–2 inches for home lawns | Recommendations vary by region and mower type. Mississippi State Extension’s warm-season table is from 2009; consult local guidance. Mississippi State; Texas A&M. |
| Zoysiagrass | 1–1.5 inches | Mississippi State Extension warm-season table, published 2009: source. |
| St. Augustinegrass | 2.5–3 inches | Mississippi State Extension warm-season table, published 2009. Its coarse blades call for a higher cut than fine-bladed bermudagrass, according to UF/IFAS: Mississippi State; UF/IFAS. |
| Ordinary domestic lawn (UK guidance) | 13–25 mm (about 0.5–1 inch) in summer; up to 40 mm (about 1.5 inches) in spring and autumn | RHS guidance reflects UK climate and lawn styles; fine lawns have a separate 6–13 mm range. Do not substitute these figures for species-specific local advice: RHS. |
Broad guidance can differ from species-specific recommendations. The USGA describes most cool-season grasses as performing well around 3 inches or higher, many warm-season grasses around 1.5–2.5 inches, and St. Augustine often around 3–4 inches. Treat those as broad ranges, not a replacement for local advice: USGA.

Adjust for conditions and priorities
- Leaf texture and species: Coarse-bladed grasses such as St. Augustine generally need a higher cut than fine-bladed bermudagrass.
- Season and growth: Follow local advice for seasonal changes rather than assuming the same setting suits the lawn all year.
- Heat, drought, or other stress: Use the middle or upper part of the recommended range to preserve leaf area.
- Appearance and maintenance: A lower cut may suit some fine turf, but it leaves less margin for missed mowing and uneven ground. A higher cut generally preserves more leaf area and supports deeper roots.
- Mower capability: Choose a height the deck can hold evenly. A setting that is too low for uneven ground can scalp high spots.
Set and verify the mower’s actual height
A numbered deck lever position is not a universal inch measurement: scales differ by mower model. Use the owner’s manual for the control, then verify the physical blade or deck height.
#1 Best Overall
- Oregon Replacement Deck Leveling Gauge
- Oregon Genuine Replacement Part
- No Assembly Required
- Contains one mower blade
- Identify the dominant grass. Find its target range in local extension guidance, accounting for season and current stress.
- Park safely on level pavement. Disengage the blades and follow the manufacturer’s safety procedure before checking beneath the deck. Keep hands clear of the blades.
- Choose a starting setting. Set the deck near the middle or upper part of the target range, especially in heat, drought, or other stressful conditions.
- Measure the real height. Use a ruler or mower-height gauge to check blade or deck height on the level surface. Kansas State’s mowing guide illustrates measuring beside the mower deck: Kansas State guide.
- Mow dry grass. Wet mowing is not advisable, according to Illinois Extension: source.
- Inspect the first pass. If you see brown, scalped areas, raise the deck and move back toward the target gradually.
Follow the one-third rule
At any one mowing, remove no more than one-third of the standing leaf. For example, UF/IFAS says that if St. Augustine is maintained at 4 inches, mow before it grows beyond 6 inches. This keeps the cut within the one-third limit: UF/IFAS.
Cutting too much at once, or repeatedly mowing too short, stresses turf. UF/IFAS notes that excessive leaf removal can reduce rooting and tolerance to drought, insects, disease, heat, poor soil, and traffic. UC IPM warns that repeated excessive cutting can leave turf vulnerable to weeds, disease, and thin growth: UC IPM.

- Used to accurately level and measure mower decks on all riding and walk behind mowers
- Measure tip to tip cutting edge (side to side and front to back)
- Measure one side cutting edge. Check Height on gauge; measure other side cutting edge. Check Height on gauge.
- Deck is level if heights are the same. If not, deck adjustments will need to be made.
- Use gloves to avoid injury
If the lawn is overgrown
Do not try to reach the target in one pass. Raise the deck for the first cut, then mow again after regrowth, lowering the setting gradually while keeping each cut within the one-third rule. UC IPM recommends this gradual approach rather than scalping the lawn: UC IPM.

Keep the cut clean and reduce wear
- Keep blades sharp. A dull blade tears grass and leaves split, ragged tips that can turn brown. Sharp blades improve cut appearance and engine efficiency, according to Mississippi State Extension; Illinois Extension also connects a clean cut with reduced disease risk from damaged leaf tissue. Mississippi State; Illinois Extension.
- Vary your mowing pattern. Mississippi State Extension recommends changing patterns with riding mowers to reduce soil compaction and turf wear: source.
