Kawasaki’s hydrogen-powered “robot horse” is real—but it is not a production motorcycle, and it is not available to buy. Called CORLEO, the machine is a four-legged off-road personal-mobility concept from Kawasaki Heavy Industries. It was unveiled on April 3, 2025, ahead of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.

The concept is designed to carry a rider across rocky, uneven and water-adjacent terrain using horse-like movement and weight-shift controls. Kawasaki’s current roadmap points to a potential product release in 2035, with a riding simulator planned for 2027 and a new CORLEO model planned for Expo 2030 Riyadh.

What is Kawasaki CORLEO?

CORLEO is a four-legged off-road mobility vehicle designed to be ridden in much the same way as a horse. Instead of handlebars and conventional steering, the rider shifts their body weight to influence the vehicle’s movement and direction.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries—not Kawasaki Motors’ existing motorcycle business—developed the concept. Its four legs are intended to let CORLEO step over or negotiate terrain that would be difficult for a wheeled vehicle, including rocky ground, steep or uneven surfaces and areas close to water.

The design uses motorcycle-derived engineering in its rear-leg suspension. Each rear leg moves independently through a swing-arm mechanism, helping absorb impacts while keeping the rider’s forward view more stable. Kawasaki’s concept imagery shows the machine being used in outdoor and mountainous environments rather than as an urban commuter.

How the hydrogen powertrain works

CORLEO is designed around a 150cc hydrogen engine. That detail matters because the vehicle is often described online as a hydrogen fuel-cell robot. Kawasaki’s published specifications describe a hydrogen engine that generates electricity, rather than a fuel-cell system.

The generated electricity powers electric drive units located in the four legs. Hydrogen is stored in a canister toward the rear of the vehicle. Kawasaki’s corporate description places the hydrogen canister in the rear-leg section and the hydrogen engine in the front-leg section.

Component What Kawasaki has described
Vehicle type Four-legged off-road personal-mobility concept
Primary energy source Hydrogen
Engine 150cc hydrogen engine used for power generation
Drive system Electric units in the four legs
Rider input Body-weight shifting, similar to horseback riding
Suspension concept Independent rear legs using motorcycle-derived swing-arm mechanisms

Kawasaki has not published production-level figures for range, hydrogen capacity, refueling time, output or performance. Those numbers should not be inferred from the 150cc engine displacement.

Was the Kawasaki robot horse actually rideable?

CORLEO was designed around a rider, and Kawasaki says its control concept is similar to riding a horse. But the original Expo 2025 announcement did not say that visitors rode a working production vehicle. It described the exhibited CORLEO as “striking a variety of poses.”

That makes “rideable hydrogen robot horse” a reasonable description of the intended vehicle, but not proof that Kawasaki unveiled a finished, customer-ready machine. The Expo display was a concept presentation, not a retail launch.

Kawasaki CORLEO release date and development timeline

The vehicle’s status has changed from an early vision project to a more clearly defined commercialization program. Kawasaki’s original announcement called CORLEO a “2050 concept model.” Its later SAFE ADVENTURE roadmap now provides nearer-term milestones.

  1. 2025: Kawasaki unveiled the CORLEO concept before Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
  2. 2027: Kawasaki plans to complete a riding simulator to refine the vehicle’s ride feel in virtual test environments. Motion data and 3D models may also be used in gaming and esports.
  3. 2030: Kawasaki plans to show a new CORLEO model at Expo 2030 Riyadh and enter the phase in which people can ride the actual vehicle. The company is also considering it as an on-site mobility vehicle for the event.
  4. 2035: Kawasaki is targeting a product release, initially focused mainly on tourism and leisure applications.

On December 3, 2025, Kawasaki said it had begun development aimed at commercializing CORLEO and created a SAFE ADVENTURE Business Development Team reporting directly to the company president. That is a stronger commitment than the original concept unveiling, but it remains a development target rather than a confirmed retail launch.

How much will CORLEO cost?

Kawasaki has not announced a price. It has also not published a final production specification, top speed, operating range or customer-delivery date. As of August 9, 2026, the company’s roadmap still places the planned product release in 2035.

Any online price, horsepower figure or delivery claim should therefore be treated as speculation unless Kawasaki provides an official specification. The vehicle’s unusual four-leg architecture, hydrogen storage system, electric actuators and control software would all make comparisons with an ordinary Kawasaki motorcycle unreliable.

Is CORLEO a Kawasaki motorcycle?

No. CORLEO is a Kawasaki Heavy Industries concept vehicle, not a production motorcycle sold through Kawasaki’s current motorcycle range. It has a motorcycle connection through the use of swing-arm suspension ideas and the broader engineering heritage, but it has four independently moving legs instead of wheels and is intended for a different type of mobility.

It is also not currently a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. The more accurate description is a hydrogen-engine-powered electric-legged mobility concept.

What could CORLEO be used for?

Kawasaki’s stated direction is tourism and leisure, where a vehicle capable of traveling across uneven outdoor terrain could offer experiences that conventional vehicles cannot. Potential applications might include guided adventure sites, resorts or large outdoor attractions, but Kawasaki has not confirmed a detailed commercial operating model.

The concept also illustrates a broader design goal: combining motorcycle-style suspension knowledge, robotics and alternative power systems into a vehicle for terrain where wheels are less effective. Making that idea practical will require solving substantial engineering problems, including balance, leg durability, hydrogen infrastructure, rider safety and operation on public or managed land.

FAQ

Is Kawasaki CORLEO available to buy?

No. CORLEO remains under development. Kawasaki’s current roadmap targets a possible product release in 2035, initially for tourism and leisure use.

Does CORLEO use a hydrogen fuel cell?

Kawasaki describes a 150cc hydrogen engine that generates electricity for electric drive units in the four legs. Calling it hydrogen-engine-powered is more accurate than calling it a hydrogen fuel-cell robot.

Can people ride the Kawasaki robot horse?

The concept is designed for a rider and uses body-weight controls similar to horseback riding. However, Kawasaki did not announce public riding of a working production vehicle at Expo 2025. A riding simulator is planned for 2027, with actual vehicle riding targeted for the next development phase around 2030.

How fast is Kawasaki CORLEO?

Kawasaki has not announced a top speed, range, hydrogen capacity or final production specification.

The Bottom Line

CORLEO is Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ four-legged hydrogen-powered mobility concept, not a production motorcycle or a vehicle currently on sale. It uses a 150cc hydrogen engine to generate electricity for the four leg actuators, while the rider controls it by shifting body weight. Kawasaki is targeting a new rideable development stage around 2030 and a possible product release in 2035.
