Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAutomotive Bluetooth security problems are real, but they do not represent one universal flaw in every connected car. The most immediate consumer issue is a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) module used in dealer-installed KARR/SWDS anti-theft systems. UC San Diego estimates that at least 2.2 million vehicles may carry affected equipment. From roughly five yards away, researchers reported commands that can unlock doors, disable alarms, sound horns, flash lights and immobilize engines. Acrisure released a firmware update through the KARR app on July 20, 2026.
Separate research found weaknesses in factory infotainment Bluetooth Classic implementations, while an ANSSI paper documented a no-user-interaction remote-code-execution chain in one unidentified proprietary automotive Bluetooth stack. Those findings should not be merged: they involve different Bluetooth technologies, products and consequences.
The urgent warning: dealer-installed KARR/SWDS modules
The KARR/SWDS equipment is made by Acrisure and is commonly installed by dealerships rather than by the vehicle manufacturer. UC San Diego associated installations with Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Ford and Jeep dealerships in Southern California, particularly from 2017 onward, but used vehicles may now be anywhere in the United States, Canada, Japan or elsewhere. The university estimates at least 2.2 million vehicles could be affected; that is an extrapolation, not a manufacturer-confirmed recall count. (UC San Diego)
The module may remain under the driver’s dashboard even when a buyer declined the paid alarm add-on. A KARR or SWDS window sticker and a small dashboard button are useful clues, but neither their presence nor absence proves whether hardware is installed. The vendor describes KARR as an anti-theft and recovery service and claims more than 20 million units in operation; that figure is marketing information, not an independently verified affected-vehicle total. Why the authentication failure matters
Researchers reverse-engineered the smartphone application, recovered a shared authentication secret and built a proof-of-concept application that issued commands accepted by the module. This is unlike ordinary phone-to-car pairing, where a driver normally approves a new connection. UC San Diego recommended requiring physical interaction inside the vehicle for first-time enrollment; that is a design recommendation, not a documented universal requirement on existing systems. (WIRED)
What the KARR attack can—and cannot—do
| Capability | Reported status |
|---|---|
| Unlock or lock doors | Researchers reported successful commands. |
| Disable the alarm | Reported as possible through the module. |
| Sound the horn or flash headlights | Reported as possible. |
| Immobilize the engine or prevent starting | Reported as possible. |
| Start the ignition directly | Not demonstrated by the Bluetooth flaw itself. |
| Control steering or brakes | Not established for the KARR finding. |
| Locate a vehicle | Potentially aided by Bluetooth identifiers and public radio-location data. |
The reported range is approximately five yards (about 15 feet). That limits the attack to nearby locations such as driveways, parking lots, fuel stations or traffic stops, but does not make it merely theoretical. The module may continue beaconing and accepting Bluetooth signals for up to 10 minutes after the vehicle is switched off, according to WIRED’s account of the research. (UC San Diego)

Researchers did not show that the module itself starts the car. WIRED reported that a thief could pair silent unlocking with a separate locksmith or key-programming tool after entering the vehicle. “Remote car theft” therefore overstates this particular demonstration: the flaw can remove a physical barrier and interfere with immobilization, but it is not direct remote ignition takeover. Acrisure characterized exploitation as highly complex and low risk under real-world conditions; the researchers and WIRED demonstrations presented a more serious practical concern. Both positions should be attributed rather than treated as settled fact. (WIRED)
How owners should check and patch a KARR-equipped vehicle
- Look for a KARR or SWDS sticker on the driver’s window and inspect beneath the driver’s-side dashboard for a module or button.
- Open or install the official KARR Security app and pair it with the vehicle’s KARR system.
- In the app, go to Customer Service and select Firmware Update, following the reported remediation path.
- Wait for the update to complete and retain confirmation or screenshots.
- If the app cannot detect the system, you lack account credentials or the update is unavailable, contact KARR customer support or a dealer familiar with the installation.
Do not cut, unplug or remove the module as a first response. UC San Diego says it can be wired into vehicle computers and ignition-related systems, and removal may require opening the dashboard. Have a qualified dealer or automotive electrician assess it, including any effect on immobilizer operation, warranty, insurance or recovery services. (UC San Diego)

Factory infotainment Bluetooth is a separate research track
The USENIX WOOT 2025 BlueToolkit study tested Bluetooth Classic in 22 real vehicles from 14 manufacturers produced between 2016 and 2023. Across 891 tests—up to 44 per vehicle—the researchers reported 128 vulnerabilities, including design and implementation weaknesses and attack classes involving man-in-the-middle conditions, remote code execution and denial of service. The sample demonstrates a broad testing and engineering problem; it is not a statistical vulnerability rate, a universal recall or proof that all 22 vehicles can be remotely driven. (USENIX paper)

Bluetooth Classic and BLE use different protocols, profiles, pairing mechanisms and implementation stacks. The KARR/SWDS finding concerns a BLE-based aftermarket remote-control module; the USENIX work concerns factory infotainment Bluetooth Classic. A weakness in one does not automatically apply to the other, so “automotive Bluetooth” is too imprecise without naming the product and transport.
What factory-stack flaws can expose
- Unauthorized disconnection or denial of service.
- Contacts, messages, call data, eavesdropping or location exposure.
- Code execution inside the infotainment environment.
- CAN-message injection when the infotainment unit has sufficient network access.
For example, NVD describes CVE-2023-28911 in Volkswagen MIB3 Bluetooth as improper validation of user-supplied data that can disconnect channels and deny service to connected clients. The record originated with a Skoda Superb III case and should not be presented as the same bug as KARR. (NVD)

The ANSSI remote-code-execution case
A 2026 paper by France’s ANSSI researchers describes a no-user-interaction exploit chain against a proprietary Bluetooth implementation embedded in a production infotainment system. The authors report a vulnerability similar to CVE-2018-20378, bypasses for address-space layout randomization and data-execution prevention, and remote code execution. They say the compromise could inject messages onto the vehicle’s CAN network. The publicly available paper does not identify the vehicle or manufacturer, so it is a technical case study—not evidence that every vehicle using a supplier or Bluetooth stack is vulnerable. Exploit construction details are intentionally omitted here. (ANSSI paper)
What owners of factory-Bluetooth cars should do
- Check the automaker’s recall, service-campaign and software-update channels.
- Ask a dealer whether the infotainment unit has a Bluetooth-stack update.
- Keep infotainment and connected-services software current.
- Delete unknown paired devices and reject unfamiliar pairing requests.
- Use a factory reset or delete paired phones as a privacy measure, not as proof that an implementation flaw is fixed.
- Remember that disabling Bluetooth on a phone does not disable a separate always-on aftermarket module.
There is no single universal consumer procedure for every factory infotainment system. Vehicle-specific notices and dealer service information are more reliable than generic Bluetooth advice.
What automakers and suppliers should change
- Use unique per-device credentials, key rotation and revocation instead of shared secrets.
- Require physical confirmation for first-time pairing where a device can unlock or immobilize a vehicle.
- Use signed firmware, secure boot and long-term patch support.
- Segment infotainment and aftermarket devices from safety-critical electronic control units.
- Test Bluetooth stacks independently before deployment and after supplier updates.
- Assign clear notification responsibility for dealer-installed equipment across ownership changes.
- Make update status visible to owners, including secondhand buyers who may not know a module exists.
Timeline of the KARR disclosure
- 2018: UC San Diego researchers noticed unexplained Bluetooth fingerprints while studying gas-pump skimmers.
- January 2025: WIRED reported that researchers disclosed the KARR vulnerability to Acrisure.
- July 20, 2026: Acrisure announced the firmware update.
- July 21, 2026: UC San Diego published its consumer warning.
- August 9, 2026: The university said researchers presented the work at DEF CON.
The Bottom Line
Check for a KARR/SWDS module, apply the official firmware update and seek professional help if the app cannot identify it. Keep factory infotainment software current, but do not generalize a BLE aftermarket-module flaw to every car’s Bluetooth Classic system—or mistake unlocking and immobilization for direct remote ignition control.
