Futurism reported on June 4, 2024, citing CNBC, that Elon Musk directed Nvidia to prioritize thousands of H100 AI accelerators previously reserved for Tesla for X and xAI. The underlying emails were not reproduced in the Futurism article and were not independently verified here. The report raised questions about Tesla’s AI program, but it did not prove that the reallocation caused a particular delay or that Musk was abandoning Tesla.

What the report alleged

The hardware at issue was Nvidia’s H100, an enterprise accelerator used to train and run large artificial-intelligence models. According to CNBC reporting summarized by Futurism, emails circulating within Nvidia indicated that shipments reserved for Tesla were to be prioritized for Musk’s social-media company X and his artificial-intelligence venture xAI.

Futurism described the quantity as “thousands” of H100s. No exact count was established, and the article did not publish the email documents themselves. The most accurate description is therefore a reported internal allocation decision, not an independently confirmed diversion.

Question What the June 2024 report established
Which chips? Nvidia H100 AI accelerators.
What action was alleged? Prioritizing X and xAI shipments that had previously been reserved for Tesla, according to emails described by CNBC and summarized by Futurism.
How many? “Thousands,” with no precise number stated.
Was a Tesla delay confirmed? No. The report described a warning about a possible delay.

Why Tesla’s AI plans mattered

Tesla has presented autonomy and robotics as central to its future, making computing capacity strategically important. On Tesla’s first-quarter 2024 earnings call, Futurism quoted Musk saying: “If somebody doesn’t believe Tesla’s going to solve autonomy, I think they should not be an investor in the company. We will, and we are.”

Against that promise, moving Tesla-allocated accelerators to other Musk-controlled or Musk-led projects could appear to create a conflict between Tesla’s stated priorities and the needs of newer ventures. An allocation change alone, however, does not show how many systems Tesla already had, whether replacement hardware was available, or whether the company’s autonomy schedule changed.

The Texas factory warning

Futurism also described an email obtained by CNBC that warned Tesla layoffs could delay an existing H100 project at the company’s Texas factory. That wording indicates a risk identified inside the company, not proof that the project was ultimately late, canceled or under-resourced.

Readers should keep two claims separate:

  • The reported emails allegedly shifted priority from Tesla to X and xAI.
  • A separate reported message said layoffs could delay a Tesla H100 project in Texas.

Neither point, as presented by Futurism, independently demonstrates an operational outcome.

Timeline of the statements and report

January 2024: Musk’s control concern

Futurism quoted a January post from Musk: “I’m uncomfortable growing Tesla to be a leader in AI and robotics without having [about] 25 percent voting control.” The bracketed clarification appears in Futurism’s displayed quotation; the original post was not reviewed for this account.

First-quarter 2024 earnings call

Musk told investors, as quoted by Futurism, that those who did not believe Tesla would solve autonomy should not invest: “We will, and we are.” The statement underscored how prominently autonomy featured in Tesla’s investor narrative at the time.

June 4, 2024: Futurism’s account

Victor Tangermann’s Futurism article summarized CNBC’s reporting about Nvidia emails, the alleged H100 reprioritization and the possible Texas-project delay. The article did not provide the original email text for independent examination.

Does this show Musk was “giving up on Tesla”?

No definitive conclusion follows from the reported allocation. The episode can reasonably prompt questions about governance, competing demands on Musk’s time and whether Tesla’s AI commitments received priority, but it does not by itself establish that Musk was abandoning Tesla, misleading investors or “jumping ship.” Those were rhetorical questions raised by the contemporaneous coverage, not findings supported by independently verified documents.

A stronger conclusion would require evidence such as the original Nvidia correspondence, confirmed shipment records, Tesla project schedules, replacement orders or a documented change in autonomy milestones. The June 2024 account supplied none of those independently.

The 2024 business context—and its limits

Futurism wrote that Tesla shares were down almost 30 percent so far in 2024 and referred to a controversial $56 billion pay package. Both figures describe the situation as presented in that June 4, 2024 article; they are not current performance or compensation figures and should not be used as a present-day measure of Tesla’s condition.

Likewise, describing the automaker as “flailing” reflects the article’s framing rather than a neutral statistical classification. The durable news point is the reported conflict over scarce AI infrastructure and what it might imply for oversight of Musk’s several companies.

What is known, unknown and worth checking

Reported

  • CNBC, as summarized by Futurism, reported emails saying Tesla-reserved H100s would be prioritized for X and xAI.
  • The quantity was described only as thousands.
  • An email reportedly warned that Tesla layoffs could delay an H100 project in Texas.

Not established by the article

  • The exact number of accelerators moved or their delivery dates.
  • Whether Tesla received replacement chips or altered a project schedule.
  • Whether any autonomy milestone was delayed because of the allocation.
  • Whether Musk violated a legal duty to Tesla shareholders.

For that reason, the careful takeaway is that a reported Nvidia allocation decision created a credible governance question, while the operational and legal consequences remained unproven in the source available for this account.
