What did Dubai actually test?
Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Joby Aviation and government partners are developing an aerial-taxi network. The aircraft is Joby’s battery-electric eVTOL, intended for short passenger trips between vertiports.

Dubai Media Office reported a successful Joby aerial-taxi test flight on June 30, 2025, calling it the region’s first. That announcement looked ahead to station operations and an inaugural commercial flight in 2026; it did not establish autonomous operation. The cited official record does not support that wording. On November 16, 2025, RTA and Joby announced the first crewed eVTOL aerial-taxi flight between two distinct UAE locations: Joby’s Margham test facility and Al Maktoum International Airport. A subsequent RTA update calls the journey piloted and gives its duration as 17 minutes. The November announcement and RTA’s later station-progress update therefore describe a crewed/piloted milestone, not a driverless or autonomous passenger flight.

“Autonomous” can refer to a vehicle operating without a pilot, but none of these Dubai accounts says the tested aircraft did so. It would be misleading to convert a successful eVTOL test into proof of autonomous capability.

How fast is the aircraft supposed to be?
RTA’s 2024 project announcement described an aircraft with six rotors, four battery packs, up to 161 kilometres of range and a maximum speed of 321 km/h. Those are figures published by RTA in its announcement, not independently validated test results in the official accounts cited here. Read RTA’s 2024 vertiport announcement.
RTA also gave an illustrative comparison for a Dubai International Airport-to-Palm Jumeirah trip: 10 minutes by aerial taxi versus 45 minutes by car. When will Dubai’s flying-taxi service start?
The latest cited RTA update says preparations were underway for an official launch by the end of 2026. Earlier announcements used different 2026 targets, including a Q1 target in a 2024 update and an inaugural commercial flight discussed in June 2025. These are planned milestones, not fixed schedules. The announcements reviewed do not establish that passengers can currently book or board a Dubai aerial taxi.

The proposed initial network has four stations. RTA is the transport authority coordinating the project; Joby Aviation is the aircraft developer and named service partner. The announced framework also names the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA), Skyports Infrastructure and Joby, while the later test announcement names DANS among the partners. Skyports’ role is vertiport infrastructure, not a published consumer booking service.
