A May 2024 supply-chain report suggested that Apple was considering a partnership with a U.S. electric-vehicle startup and identified Rivian as a likely candidate. No terms were disclosed, and no signed agreement, investment announcement, joint vehicle program, or executive confirmation has surfaced. Public information reviewed through August 12, 2026 therefore supports treating the story as an unconfirmed rumor—not as evidence that Apple partnered with Rivian.

What the original report said

DIGITIMES reported on May 13, 2024 that supply-chain speculation pointed to Apple potentially collaborating with an electric-vehicle startup in the United States. Rivian was described as a “very likely” candidate, but the report did not identify its sources by name or explain what the proposed collaboration would involve.

An earlier 9to5Mac report from May 6, 2024 described the claim as Apple assessing the possibility of working with an unnamed U.S. EV startup, with Rivian considered a possible match. It offered possible scenarios—including Apple contributing research, technology, or capital—but did not present any of them as confirmed facts.

Contemporaneous coverage from MacRumors and 9to5Mac emphasized how little information accompanied the report. There was no disclosed term sheet, investment amount, vehicle model, development timetable, autonomy system, software package, or indication that Rivian had agreed to participate.

Why the rumor appeared after Apple’s car project ended

The timing made the possibility attention-grabbing. On February 27, 2024, reports said Apple had canceled or wound down its long-running Project Titan electric-car effort. Reuters reporting republished by Investing.com said a source familiar with the matter confirmed that Apple had canceled work on its electric car, while Bloomberg reported that the company was shifting some employees toward generative artificial intelligence.

That sequence creates a plausible business explanation for the rumor: Apple could theoretically have sought a way to participate in automotive technology without designing and manufacturing a complete vehicle itself. That is an inference from the timing, however. Neither Apple nor Rivian said that this was their plan.

The possible areas mentioned in contemporary discussion included vehicle software, autonomous-driving research, artificial intelligence, CarPlay, or financial support. Those were possible interpretations of the rumor, not disclosed components of a proposed Apple-Rivian deal.

Why Rivian was considered a plausible candidate

Rivian is not merely a battery-pack supplier or a contract vehicle assembler. Its public filings describe a company that manufactures and directly sells electric vehicles, including the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, while developing its own software, digital experiences, and autonomy systems.

Rivian’s later public strategy also shows why a relationship with a major technology company could have been commercially meaningful. Its 2026 annual report identifies its software architecture and joint venture with Volkswagen Group Technologies as important parts of its technology strategy. The filing also says Rivian expected customer deliveries of the R2 to begin in the second quarter of 2026 and presents that vehicle as central to the company’s growth and potential profitability.

None of that verifies the Apple report. It only explains why Rivian would have been a logical name for supply-chain speculation: it had an established vehicle platform, an in-house software stack, autonomy ambitions, and a need to scale its business.

Was Apple planning to invest in Rivian?

There is no public evidence in the reviewed record that Apple invested in Rivian or agreed to do so. The May 2024 reporting did not disclose an investment amount, equity stake, financing round, loan, acquisition proposal, or other financial arrangement.

Apple providing capital was one possibility mentioned in the surrounding coverage, but it should not be converted into a statement that an investment was under discussion or completed. A private conversation cannot be ruled out solely because it was not publicly announced; nevertheless, no confirmed transaction has been identified.

Was Apple going to build a car with Rivian?

That conclusion goes beyond the evidence. The original report did not name a vehicle, manufacturing plan, launch date, or division of responsibilities. It did not say that Apple would design a car, that Rivian would manufacture an Apple-branded vehicle, or that the companies would jointly develop a new model.

The most that can responsibly be said is that a report suggested Apple was exploring some form of relationship with an EV startup and that Rivian was viewed as a likely candidate. The nature of any possible discussions was unknown.

Could CarPlay or CarPlay Ultra have been involved?

Apple does have automotive products that could theoretically be relevant to an automaker. Its official CarPlay developer documentation covers CarPlay, CarPlay Ultra, AirPlay video in the car, and digital car keys. It describes support for navigation, messaging, audio, EV-related apps, and integration with vehicle screens and controls.

But the existence of those products does not show that Rivian was adopting them or negotiating with Apple. The May 2024 stories mentioned ordinary CarPlay integration as one possible explanation for the speculation, while acknowledging that Rivian’s actual arrangement—if any—was unknown.

Accordingly, it would be inaccurate to write that Rivian was “getting CarPlay,” that Apple had licensed CarPlay Ultra to Rivian, or that the companies had agreed to use Apple’s vehicle platform. No such announcement was found in the reviewed record.

What Apple and Rivian have actually announced since the rumor

Rivian did later announce a real Apple-related product integration. On February 19, 2026, the company announced a Rivian companion app for Apple Watch. The app allows compatible users to perform vehicle-related actions such as locking and unlocking the vehicle, adjusting climate settings, checking charging information, and viewing battery status.

This is a customer-facing software connection between Rivian vehicles and Apple Watch. It is not evidence that the rumored 2024 strategic partnership materialized, and it does not establish support for CarPlay or CarPlay Ultra in Rivian vehicles.

Rivian’s later disclosed strategic relationships provide another useful check. Its 2026 SEC earnings materials identify the Volkswagen Group Technologies joint venture and an Uber partnership involving autonomous R2 robotaxis and potential investment. The reviewed materials do not identify Apple as a strategic partner.

Current status as of August 12, 2026

No searched primary or reputable secondary source located a signed Apple-Rivian agreement, investment announcement, joint product announcement, regulatory filing, or executive confirmation connected to the May 2024 report.

That does not prove the companies never had private discussions. It does mean the public record does not justify saying that Apple invested in Rivian, that Rivian adopted Apple’s in-car platform, or that the two companies are building a vehicle together.

Bottom line: The Apple-Rivian partnership was a real report, but the partnership itself was never confirmed in the sources reviewed. The later Apple Watch app is a separate, limited integration—not proof that the 2024 rumor became a strategic automotive deal.
