Ask the repair center to explain the diagnostic findings and why it recommends the quoted scope. A complete-pack quote should not be treated as the only possible solution until the shop has established that it is appropriate.
Could the i3 battery warranty cover the repair?
BMW’s standard high-voltage battery defect warranty
BMW USA says BMW North America covers the high-voltage lithium-ion battery assembly against defects in materials or workmanship for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first, measured from the vehicle’s in-service date. This is defect coverage, not a blanket promise to replace a battery simply because its capacity or driving range has declined with age and use. A limited extension for certain temperature-sensor repairs
A BMW North America bulletin dated October 25, 2024, provides an extended limited warranty of up to 15 years or 150,000 miles for a specified high-voltage battery cell-module internal temperature-sensor repair kit, subject to VIN eligibility and the bulletin’s terms. It lists 2014–2019 i3 BEV and 2018–2019 i3 Sport BEV applications, with production-date details. The extension does not cover unrelated high-voltage battery assembly components. Covered repairs may not mean a complete new pack
BMW’s US warranty booklet for the 2026 model year says BMW determines the repair path for a covered high-voltage battery issue and may update software, repair components, or replace appropriate components with new, refurbished, or reconditioned parts. Under the booklet’s covered-repair conditions, BMW guarantees at least 70% minimum net battery capacity after repair. Those terms belong to that booklet; do not assume they apply to every older i3. - Parts identity, condition, availability, and provenance.
- Labor, including battery removal and reinstallation if needed.
- Programming, commissioning, or other required work.

Are used or refurbished BMW i3 batteries worth considering?

Who should replace an i3 high-voltage battery?
Battery removal and rework are specialist jobs, not a DIY procedure. BMW/NHTSA repair documents require appropriately trained and certified high-voltage battery personnel for this work. BMW’s bulletin states: “Only properly trained personnel, who passed all applicable HV Technical Training Courses, should perform repairs which require disconnecting, or removal of High Voltage battery components.” BMW North America service bulletin
Use a repair center qualified for high-voltage battery work, and have it verify the vehicle’s VIN-specific warranty and campaign eligibility before authorizing a customer-paid pack replacement.
