Renault’s Gordini story is best seen through three landmark cars: the Dauphine Gordini, Renault 8 Gordini and Renault 12 Gordini. The official galleries and Renault history pages linked below offer model imagery; the cars are easiest to distinguish by era, body and mechanical layout—not blue paint alone.

Dauphine Gordini: the beginning
Amédée Gordini began working with Renault in 1957, the year the Dauphine Gordini was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show. Renault Group records a Dauphine Gordini victory in the 1958 Tour de Corse. The combination of a small family-car base and Gordini engine and gearbox modifications established the pattern for later Renault performance models.

For Dauphine Gordini pictures and period rally imagery, start with Renault Group’s Dauphine history. Use captions that identify the model only as specifically as the source does; a photograph alone may not establish the exact year or trim.
Renault 8 Gordini: the blue-and-white icon
Renault says the R8 Gordini launched in 1964. Its blue body and two white stripes became its most familiar visual identifiers, but livery alone is not proof that a particular car is an authentic Gordini. The R8’s rear-engine arrangement is a more fundamental distinction from the later R12.

The Originals Renault Museum lists 95 hp for the R8 Gordini. Its improved 1966 version had a 1,300 cc engine and five-speed gearbox, with a stated maximum speed of 175 km/h. Those are the museum’s specifications; the cited page does not provide further test conditions.
Renault’s institutional account calls the approach an affordable way to make a sports car from a large-series model: “By offering a sporty version – under the name Gordini – of a large series model, Renault could offer affordable sports cars: it was the birth of the GTI before the name even existed.” The statement is Renault’s historical framing, not an attributed quotation from a named individual.

The Renault 12 Gordini was revealed to the public at the Paris Motor Show in October 1970. Although its blue-and-white theme linked it visually to the R8, its engineering did not: the R12 had a front-mounted engine driving the front wheels, rather than the R8’s rear-engine arrangement.

How to identify a Gordini in pictures
- Start with the model and shape. The Dauphine, R8 and R12 belong to different periods and have distinct bodies; identify the car before relying on paint.
- Check the layout clues. The R8 is rear-engined, while the R12 is front-engined and front-wheel drive.
- Treat stripes as a cue, not proof. Renault identifies blue paint and twin white stripes with the R8 Gordini, and the R12 also carries the familiar theme. A similar livery by itself cannot establish model, year, trim or authenticity.
- Use source captions carefully. Renault’s model pages are useful starting points for images, but do not claim a precise year, event or specification unless the accompanying source identifies it.
Renault’s official pages provide image discovery, not a stated reuse license. Confirm image rights and attribution requirements before reproducing any photograph.
