Used sedans can be affordable alternatives to compact SUVs, but the available price data does not establish that these 10 cars cost less than “most” SUVs. The strongest documented bargains here are three midsize sedans with 2026 national average used prices below $15,000: the 2016 Toyota Camry, 2018 Subaru Legacy, and 2016 Honda Accord. Their reliability scores are from iSeeCars, while Consumer Reports and IIHS offer separate model-year reliability and safety screens. Treat this as a shortlist to compare—not a universal price ranking or a promise about any individual car.
What the price and reliability evidence can—and cannot—show
iSeeCars’ 2026 analyses report national average used prices for specific model years and reliability scores for some of those cars. These averages are not guaranteed asking prices; an individual listing can differ with mileage, trim, condition, location, and history. iSeeCars says its analysis assesses reliability, resale value, and safety across 12 million vehicles. Its scores should be read as that publisher’s assessment, not an industry-wide consensus: iSeeCars’ 2026 midsize cars under $25,000 and its reliable midsize cars under $15,000.
No matched sedan-versus-compact-SUV price comparison is available here. To establish whether a sedan is cheaper for you, compare similar model years, mileage, condition, and location. A lower purchase price also does not by itself prove lower total ownership cost: fuel use, insurance, maintenance, repairs, safety equipment, and your space needs matter.

Those averages leave little room for assuming every example will meet a $15,000 budget, especially after taxes, fees, or needed repairs. Inspect the specific listing and calculate its full purchase cost before comparing it with an SUV.
Other sedan model years worth checking
Hyundai Sonata
iSeeCars reports a $23,250 average used price for the 2025 Sonata in its 2026 under-$25,000 midsize list. Consumer Reports includes the 2023 and 2024 Sonata among selected above-average-reliability years. IIHS’ used-vehicle selections include Sonata model years 2016–2025, subject to the page’s build-date and eligibility details. These are separate price, reliability, and safety screens, not a single all-purpose verdict on every Sonata.

Mazda6
Consumer Reports identifies selected Mazda6 years 2015–2017 and 2021 for above-average reliability. IIHS includes 2016–2018 Mazda6 models in its used-vehicle selections. The evidence cited here does not provide a comparable used-price figure for a specific Mazda6 year.
Nissan Altima
Consumer Reports identifies 2018 and 2023 Altima years among its selected above-average-reliability years. IIHS includes Altima model years 2016–2020 in its used-vehicle selections. CARFAX describes the 2013–2018 fifth generation as the Altima’s most reliable generation in its commercial ranking; that is CARFAX’s assessment, not a guarantee for an individual car: CARFAX’s 2026 sedan reliability ranking.

Chevrolet Malibu
IIHS includes Malibu model years 2014–2025 in its used-vehicle selections. The price and reliability evidence available here does not support putting a particular Malibu year on the same footing as the Camry, Accord, or Legacy. Check the specific year in Consumer Reports’ 2026 used-car buying guide and compare the individual vehicle’s price, history, and condition.

IIHS’ used-vehicle selections, updated May 27, 2026, are not a comprehensive reliability ranking. IIHS says its vehicles must meet criteria involving curb weight, driver-side small-overlap crash-test performance, and Consumer Reports braking, handling, and control usability. Its list includes Accord sedans from 2013–2025, Legacy 2015–2019, Mazda6 2016–2018, Altima 2016–2020, and Sonata 2016–2025 with a build-date qualification. IIHS reports median retail prices from Black Book in April 2026, rounded to the nearest $100; its prices correspond to all trims for the earliest applicable model year. Those figures are not interchangeable with iSeeCars’ averages.

Before buying: verify the car, not just the model name
- Check the vehicle’s history and service records. A history report can flag issues such as accidents or flood damage, but it may not reveal mechanical problems. The FTC states: “A vehicle history report is not a substitute for an independent vehicle inspection.” See the FTC’s used-car buying guidance.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Ask a trusted mechanic to inspect the specific vehicle and provide a written report with estimated repair costs. Use those findings to assess whether the asking price still makes sense.
- Check for unrepaired recalls by VIN. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup. NHTSA says results may not include some newly announced recalls until affected VINs are identified and generally omit recalls more than 15 years old. A clean lookup is not a full safety or condition certification; check again if needed.
- Test-drive and get the full price. Consumer.gov advises reviewing service records, test-driving, getting a trusted mechanic’s inspection, checking recalls, and asking the dealer for the total price including fees. Its car-buying guide explains these steps.
How to compare a sedan with a compact SUV
- Match the listings as closely as possible for model year, mileage, condition, and location.
- Compare the total out-the-door price, not just the advertised price.
- Check fuel economy, insurance quotes, maintenance needs, and likely repair exposure for the specific vehicles.
- Decide whether the sedan’s passenger and cargo space fits your needs; a lower price is not useful if the vehicle does not suit how you travel.
- Compare the safety equipment and recall status of the exact model year and vehicle.
