The strongest supported shortlist includes the Honda CR-V Hybrid, Lexus NX Hybrid, Subaru Forester Hybrid, Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Toyota Highlander Hybrid—but their reliability evidence comes from different sources, methods and model years, so they cannot be placed in a fair 1–5 order.
Which hybrid SUV is most reliable?
The evidence points to several credible choices, not one proven winner. Consumer Reports (CR) identifies the CR-V Hybrid, Lexus NX Hybrid and Forester Hybrid as strong performers near the top of their respective categories. J.D. Power (JDP) names the 2022 Toyota RAV4 as the winner of its Compact SUV category in the 2025 dependability awards. CR’s 2025 Top Picks includes the Highlander Hybrid and Lexus NX350h.
These findings answer different questions. CR’s predicted-reliability ratings are based on owner surveys; JDP’s dependability study counts problems owners experienced over a defined period; and iSeeCars models the likelihood of reaching a high-mileage threshold. Their results are not interchangeable, and none establishes a universal reliability ranking across the models below.
Five hybrid SUVs with meaningful reliability evidence

Why this is not a verified list of 10
iSeeCars’ 2026 hybrid crossover ranking covers nine crossovers. Its available summary names the RAV4 Hybrid, CR-V Hybrid and Kia Sportage Hybrid, but does not provide the full ordered list or individual scores needed to substantiate the remaining entries. The Sportage Hybrid is therefore a candidate to check against the full ranking, not a verified top-ranked pick here. CR’s 2025 SUV list recommends the plug-in Sportage variant, which is a different powertrain.
Adding five more models or assigning positions would imply evidence that is not established here. Treat any future additions as separate candidates and state the source, model year and method for each rather than presenting a false precision ranking.

What the reliability studies measure
Consumer Reports: owner-survey predicted reliability
CR says its latest reliability ratings draw on responses for about 380,000 vehicles — Consumer Reports, 2025. The surveyed vehicles include model years 2000 through 2025 and a few early 2026 vehicles. CR also reports that conventional hybrids had fewer problems than gas-only vehicles overall. That group-level finding does not mean every hybrid is more reliable than every gas SUV.
J.D. Power: problems reported by owners
JDP says its 2026 Dependability ratings reflect responses from more than 80,000 verified owners — J.D. Power, 2026 — of three-year-old vehicles, counting problems experienced during the preceding 12 months. Its 2025 study recorded 199 problems per 100 vehicles for conventional hybrids — J.D. Power, 2025 — compared with 242 problems per 100 vehicles for plug-in hybrids. These are powertrain-wide figures, not scores for the SUV models in the shortlist; fewer reported problems is better.

A JDP award describes the evaluated three-year-old model, not a guarantee about a new redesign, another model year or an individual used vehicle.
iSeeCars: modeled high-mileage likelihood
iSeeCars uses a modeled likelihood of reaching a high-mileage threshold, a different measure from CR’s survey-based prediction or JDP’s reported-problem count. The summary available for its 2026 hybrid crossover ranking does not provide enough model-level detail to compare individual scores here.

Conventional hybrid or plug-in hybrid?
A conventional hybrid recharges its smaller battery through the engine and regenerative braking; it does not need to be plugged in. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has a larger battery that can be recharged externally. Because the technologies differ, compare them separately and check that a reliability result applies to the powertrain you are considering.
JDP’s 2025 study found more reported problems per 100 vehicles for PHEVs than for conventional hybrids across powertrains as a whole. That group result is not proof that any specific PHEV is less reliable than any specific conventional hybrid.

How to choose among the most reliable hybrid crossover SUVs
- Match the size to your needs. Consider passenger and cargo space rather than choosing by reliability coverage alone.
- Confirm the powertrain. Check whether the listing is for a conventional hybrid or a PHEV; similarly named versions can have different evidence.
- Match the result to the model year. A finding for an older generation does not establish reliability for a redesign. This matters especially for the 2026 RAV4 and the comparatively new Forester Hybrid.
- Choose drivetrain and trim deliberately. Verify whether the exact version offers the drivetrain you need, including whether all-wheel drive is available on that trim.
- Check the exact year and configuration for running costs. The cited reliability sources do not provide one consistent comparison of current prices, fuel economy, warranty terms or configuration details.
- For a used example, assess the individual vehicle. A model-level rating cannot reveal that vehicle’s maintenance or accident history; review its records and arrange a pre-purchase inspection.
