Some sports cars feel especially at home in red—not because another color would be wrong, but because a particular shade is tied to the car’s history, design or identity. The documented examples here make a strong shortlist, not a verified ten-car ranking: the available evidence supports several model-and-color pairings, but not ten distinct cars with equally clear connections.
Why red feels right on certain sports cars
Red can do more than brighten a body. It can call up motorsport history, draw attention to a car’s shape or express a manufacturer’s design intent. Those connections are specific: Ferrari’s racing red has a national-color story, Porsche describes Guards Red in terms of the 930 Turbo’s lines and performance, and Mazda has used several distinct reds across different models.
Sports cars with a documented red connection
Porsche 911 (930) Turbo — Guards Red
Porsche traces Guards Red on the 911 (930) Turbo to 1975 and says the shade has adorned generations of its sports cars. The company characterizes it as a color that highlights the Turbo’s body lines and evokes speed and performance. That is Porsche’s design interpretation, rather than an objective measure of how the color changes the car. Porsche’s May 31, 2022 color history also mentions Guards Red on 911 GT3 and Carrera models, but does not establish a model year or market configuration for those examples.
First-generation Eunos Roadster / Mazda MX-5 — Classic Red
Mazda’s corporate history identifies the 1989 first-generation Eunos Roadster in Classic Red. The pairing gives the small roadster a vivid, unmistakable look without making the color the only reason to remember the car: it is one entry in a longer history of Mazda reds.

ɛ̀fini Mazda RX-7 — Vintage Red
Mazda’s model-color timeline associates Vintage Red with the 1990s ɛ̀fini RX-7. The ɛ̀fini name matters here: this is a period-specific Mazda model identity, not evidence that every RX-7 generation or market used the same red.
Mazda RX-8 — Velocity Red Mica
The same Mazda history names Velocity Red Mica for the RX-8. Its distinct paint name is a useful reminder that “red” is not one uniform finish; manufacturers develop and identify different reds for different cars and periods.

Ferrari 125 S — racing red
Formula 1’s September 4, 2026 history of Ferrari liveries says the 125 S, Ferrari’s first car, debuted in May 1947 in racing red. The color’s background reaches beyond one car: Italy’s assigned national racing color was red. The 125 S is included here as a historically important sports car, while the source itself is about F1 livery history rather than a complete catalog of road-car paint options.
Two useful pieces of context—not extra proof of a ten-car list
The Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 had a broad period color palette
Porsche’s account of the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 says buyers could choose among 29 paint tones, of which 27 were produced, including Red and Blood Orange. That establishes that red hues were among the period choices; it does not establish that every RS 2.7 was red or make the model a single, definitive red pairing.

Mazda’s reds reflect an evolving design language
Mazda’s history names Classic Red on the 1989 Eunos Roadster, Vintage Red on the 1990s ɛ̀fini RX-7, Velocity Red Mica on the RX-8 and Soul Red on the Mazda6 in 2012. Mazda says it has created more than 40 red colors; that is the company’s count of shades, not a sales or popularity statistic.
Mazda color designer Akihiro Hosono described the design intention this way: “In our minds, red was the only color that could express Mazda’s strong passion and dedication to the creation of cars.” The quotation appears on Mazda USA’s design page. Soul Red’s first adoption on the Mazda6 makes it relevant to Mazda’s color history, but the Mazda6 is not presented here as a sports car.

What makes Mazda’s Soul Red Crystal different
Soul Red Crystal is an engineered finish, not just a new label for generic red. In a November 16, 2016 release, Mazda described a highly saturated red pigment combined with thin aluminum and light-absorbing flakes. The structure is intended to intensify the color and control reflections, creating greater depth. That release documents the paint technology; it does not establish that the finish is currently offered on every Mazda model or in every market.
How to read a “best in red” list
“Looks best in red” is a matter of taste. A more useful way to assess the claim is to ask whether a named shade is tied to a specific model or generation, whether the manufacturer explains its design purpose, and whether there is a documented motorsport or cultural history behind it. On that basis, the examples above have meaningful connections to red—but those connections do not prove that red is the only color that suits them.
