Hal Sperlich, the Ford product planner who championed the early Mustang project, died at 95, Ford Performance reported on February 18, 2025. The “Godfather of the Mustang” label came from Ford Performance enthusiast communications manager and author John Clor—not from a formal title—and reflects Sperlich’s role in helping turn the car into a production reality.
Who was Hal Sperlich?
Sperlich was a Detroit native and Navy veteran who joined Ford in product planning in 1957. Ford Performance says he recognized in the 1960s that younger buyers could be drawn to smaller vehicles, an insight that helped shape the thinking behind the Mustang.
What did Sperlich do for the Mustang?
Ford Performance credits Sperlich with leading a special-studies team tasked with developing a stylish, affordable car. The team based its proposal on the existing Ford Falcon platform, which helped control costs. Sperlich worked with Lee Iacocca to move the project forward.
Clor drew a distinction between their contributions: “If Lee Iacocca is the Father of the Mustang, then Hal Sperlich is the Godfather of the Mustang.” The phrase is Clor’s characterization of Sperlich’s influence, not an official title or a claim that he alone created the car.

How successful was the Mustang at launch?
Ford Performance reported that the Mustang sold more than 400,000 cars in its first year. The February 18, 2025 article does not define the exact period meant by “first year” or cite the underlying sales records, so the figure should be read as Ford’s reported account rather than as a more precisely dated total.

Ford Performance also says Sperlich later advocated for the Ford Fiesta, which the company’s account presents as a response to the oil crisis of the 1970s. His Mustang work, however, is what earned him Clor’s memorable comparison.
