The Red Bull RB17 was publicly unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 12 July 2024. It returned to Goodwood in July 2026 for a different milestone: Adrian Newey drove it up the hill, in what RACER described as the car’s public track debut. The RB17 is a track-only hypercar, not a road car.
When did the Red Bull RB17 debut at Goodwood?
Red Bull scheduled the RB17’s public reveal for Friday, 12 July 2024, during the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which ran from 11 to 14 July that year. Red Bull’s post-event feature confirms the car was unveiled at the festival. Red Bull Racing’s announcement and its reveal feature document those milestones.
The word “debut” can refer to that public unveiling or to the car being driven in public. Goodwood’s report dated 24 July 2026 describes Newey driving the RB17 up the Goodwood Hill; RACER characterized the July 2026 appearance as its public track debut. The 2026 run was not the first public reveal, and the sources do not describe it as a race.
What happened when the RB17 ran at Goodwood in 2026?
Adrian Newey, the RB17’s creator and designer, drove the car up the Goodwood Hill in July 2026, two years after its unveiling. Goodwood reported that the running car had changed substantially from the version shown in 2024, saying virtually everything had changed during development. Goodwood’s 24 July 2026 report covers the run and Newey’s account of the design.

RACER reported that commissioning and development testing were still continuing after the event, with additional systems yet to be tested. It quoted Red Bull Advanced Technologies technical director Rob Gray estimating that the car had completed about 500 km of total running at the time of his interview. That is a development estimate reported in July 2026, not a current mileage total. RACER’s 15 July 2026 report also described the running car as a 1,200 hp hybrid.
Is the RB17 road legal?
No. RACER described the RB17 as track-only and not road legal. Gray said the car drew on Le Mans rules as a safety benchmark, not because Red Bull intended to race it: “The Le Mans rules thing is really not because we think we’re going to go and race, but because we wanted a safety standard that we can stand behind,” he explained to RACER.

How many RB17s will Red Bull build?

The figures changed in context as the car moved from its 2024 reveal toward its 2026 running appearance. Red Bull’s reveal-era figures should not be treated as guaranteed final production specifications: Goodwood reported substantial development changes, and RACER said commissioning was still under way after the 2026 run.

In an interview after his first Goodwood run, Newey told Goodwood that the design goal went beyond lap times: “It’s not simply chasing lap times,” he said. He described the aim as a more holistic design, combining performance with a car that could be appreciated as “a piece of art” by a wide variety of people. The quoted figures above are reported at different development milestones, rather than a like-for-like final specification.
