Recent Google Maps and Android Auto Update Problems: How to Fix Disconnections, Crashes, and Missing Directions

A recent Android Auto regression—not necessarily a Google Maps update alone—caused crashes, missing directions, and disconnections for some users. Here is the safest fix sequence.

Yes, a recent Android Auto update can make Google Maps navigation fail—but the best-documented 2026 problem was not a universal Google Maps update failure. Some users experienced crashes, audio-triggered failures, and repeated disconnections after Android Auto 17.2 rolled out. Google later identified an issue affecting some uncertified aftermarket head units and released a corrective build.

Start by updating Android Auto through Google Play. The reported stable fix was Android Auto 17.2.662638; beta users were directed to 17.3.662813. Then restart both your phone and the car’s infotainment system. If Maps still fails, work through the connection, cache, permissions, cable, pairing, and head-unit checks below.

What actually broke?

Android Auto version 17.2.662404 began rolling out on July 3, 2026. Users reported Android Auto disconnecting every few seconds or minutes, crashing when audio started playing, and failing to maintain a stable connection.

The reports affected different phones and Android versions, so there is no evidence that one particular phone model or Android release was solely responsible. Google later said the rollout exposed a problem affecting some uncertified aftermarket head units. That makes the headline “Google Maps update breaks Android Auto” directionally understandable, but technically too broad: the clearest documented regression involved Android Auto itself, with Google Maps symptoms appearing for some users.

A separate Google Maps issue—turn-by-turn directions not appearing in Android Auto—was listed by the Android Auto community among recently addressed issues on July 10, 2026. Missing directions therefore may be a known software problem rather than proof that your phone’s GPS, the car’s receiver, or the Maps app is permanently damaged.

Fix Android Auto and Google Maps in this order

1. Update Android Auto, Google Maps, and Google Play components

Open Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, choose Manage apps & device, and install all available updates. Check these components specifically:

  • Android Auto
  • Google Maps
  • Google Play services
  • The Google app

The most important update for the documented 17.2 regression is Android Auto. Google reported stable build 17.2.662638 as the corrective release, while the corresponding beta build was 17.3.662813. Build availability can vary because Google uses staged rollouts, so install the newest version Google Play offers for your phone rather than trying to locate a particular APK manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check the installed Android Auto version, search for Android Auto in Google Play and open its app page. Depending on the phone and Android release, Android Auto may also appear under Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto.

2. Restart both the phone and the vehicle’s infotainment system

After installing updates, restart the phone. Then fully restart the car’s infotainment system—not merely the phone connection. Some systems require turning the vehicle off, opening and closing the driver’s door, and waiting several minutes before the head unit powers down; follow the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure.

After the restart, verify that Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle’s infotainment settings and test the connection while parked.

3. Clear Google Maps’ cache

If Android Auto connects but Google Maps crashes, freezes, displays a blank screen, or refuses to render navigation, clear the Maps cache:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings on the phone.
  2. Tap Apps or Apps & notifications.
  3. Select Maps.
  4. Tap Storage & cache.
  5. Choose Clear cache.

Update Maps before clearing its cache. Clearing the cache removes temporary files and is the lower-risk first step. Do not confuse it with Clear storage or Clear data, which can remove locally stored app state and settings. Google documents cache clearing as a troubleshooting step, but it is not a guaranteed cure for an Android Auto regression.

4. Check location, mobile data, and permissions

Google Maps navigation in Android Auto depends on the connected phone. Check the following:

  • Location: Make sure Location is enabled in the phone’s quick settings or under Settings > Location.
  • Maps permission: Open Settings > Apps > Maps > Permissions and confirm that Maps is allowed to use location. The exact choices vary by Android version; “While using the app” is generally the relevant minimum for active navigation.
  • Mobile data: Confirm that the phone has working cellular data. Load a webpage or search for a destination in Maps before connecting to the car.
  • Battery restrictions: If Maps repeatedly stops in the background, check whether aggressive battery optimization is restricting Maps or Android Auto.

First test Google Maps on the phone itself. If it cannot find your location, calculate routes, or load map data while disconnected from the car, fix the phone’s location or data problem before troubleshooting Android Auto.

5. Forget the car and pair it again

A corrupted pairing can make a previously working connection appear to fail after an update. Google’s supported reset procedure is:

  1. Disconnect or unplug the phone from the car.
  2. Open Android Auto settings on the phone.
  3. Tap Previously connected cars.
  4. Open the menu and choose Forget all cars.
  5. Reconnect the phone to the vehicle and complete the setup again.

This resets stored vehicle connections, so you may need to approve permissions and configure the car again. It is a reasonable way to clear damaged pairing data, but it does not prove that pairing caused the original failure.

6. Replace the USB cable if you use wired Android Auto

For a wired connection, the cable is a frequent failure point—especially if Android Auto worked previously and then began disconnecting. Google recommends a high-quality USB cable that is preferably under 3 feet (1 meter) long, with no USB hub or extension. The cable supplied with the phone is a sensible first test.

A cable can still charge the phone while failing to maintain a reliable data connection. Try a different short USB-C data cable, connect directly to the vehicle’s USB port, and test every relevant port if the car has more than one.

If you are replacing the cable, a short USB-C cable for Android Auto is a sensible accessory to test. Choose one designed for data transfer, avoid unnecessarily long cables, and do not treat any cable as a guaranteed fix for a software bug.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

USB-IF certification can be a useful quality-screening signal, but it does not guarantee compatibility with every phone, vehicle, or aftermarket head unit.

7. Update the car or aftermarket receiver’s firmware

If your vehicle uses a Pioneer, Kenwood, or another aftermarket receiver, check the manufacturer’s support site for firmware updates. Record the following before downloading or installing anything:

  • Vehicle or receiver make and model
  • Receiver firmware version
  • Phone model and Android version
  • Android Auto version
  • Whether the connection is wired or wireless

This step is particularly important for third-party systems because Google associated the documented Android Auto 17.2 issue with some uncertified aftermarket head units. Follow the receiver manufacturer’s installation instructions exactly. Do not interrupt a firmware update or use software intended for a different model.

8. Use Waze temporarily if navigation is the urgent problem

If Android Auto connects but Google Maps remains unusable, Waze is a compatible Android Auto navigation alternative. This can restore navigation while Google or the receiver manufacturer resolves the underlying issue.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Waze is a workaround, not a repair. If Android Auto itself disconnects or crashes, changing navigation apps may not help.

9. Avoid APK downgrades unless you understand the risks

Some users reported fewer disconnections after returning to an earlier Android Auto build. Those reports are user-generated, inconsistent, and not Google’s preferred support path.

Sideloading an APK can introduce security risks, compatibility problems, corrupted app data, and update conflicts. It can also install a build that is inappropriate for your phone or vehicle. Use Google Play updates first. If you are considering a rollback, treat it as an advanced last resort and use only a trustworthy source after understanding how to restore the official release.

Choose the first fix by symptom

What you see Start with Then try
Android Auto disconnects every few minutes Check the Android Auto version and whether the receiver is aftermarket. Update Android Auto, restart the phone and head unit, replace the cable if wired, and check receiver firmware.
Android Auto crashes when audio starts Update Android Auto; this was one of the reported 17.2 symptoms. Restart both systems and test with the latest available build.
Maps works on the phone but not on the car display Clear Maps cache and check the connection. Forget and reconnect the car, test another short cable, and update head-unit firmware.
Turn-by-turn directions are missing Install current Android Auto and Maps updates. Check location, mobile data, navigation settings, and reconnect the vehicle.
Wired Android Auto stopped working after previously working Replace the USB cable. Use a short, high-quality data cable without a hub or extension and try another vehicle USB port.
The interface looks different or Maps now shows 3D buildings, terrain, lanes, or traffic lights Check whether the change matches Google’s announced Android-for-cars rollout. Do not treat every visual change as a malfunction; features are rolling out gradually and availability varies.

Why Google Maps may look different even when nothing is broken

Google’s broader 2026 Android-for-cars rollout includes refreshed Android Auto visuals, edge-to-edge Maps, and an Immersive Navigation experience. Depending on availability, Maps may show more detailed 3D buildings, overpasses, terrain, lanes, traffic lights, and stop signs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These features are being released over time. A different interface, new map layout, or missing feature on one vehicle does not necessarily indicate a failed installation. Differences can reflect staged availability, the phone, the Android Auto version, or the vehicle’s display.

When the normal fixes do not work

Do not keep repeating cache clearing and pairing resets if the same failure continues. Gather diagnostic details and escalate the problem:

  • Phone make and model
  • Android version
  • Android Auto version and build number
  • Google Maps version
  • Vehicle make, model, and year
  • Aftermarket receiver model and firmware version, if applicable
  • Wired or wireless connection
  • Exact symptom—for example, “disconnects 30 seconds after audio begins”
  • Whether another cable, phone, or navigation app changes the behavior

Post those details in the Android Auto Help Community or contact the vehicle or receiver manufacturer if the problem points to head-unit firmware. Owners of aftermarket systems should especially identify whether the receiver is certified and whether its firmware is current.

What not to assume

  • Not every Android Auto failure was caused by Google Maps. The best-documented 2026 regression involved Android Auto 17.2, with Google’s stated affected group being some uncertified aftermarket head units.
  • Clearing cache is not a universal fix. It is a low-risk troubleshooting step for Maps crashes and rendering problems.
  • A new cable cannot repair a software regression. It is useful for isolating wired connection failures and replacing a degraded data cable.
  • A different interface is not automatically a defect. Some visual changes are part of Google’s staged Android-for-cars rollout.
  • An older APK is not automatically safer or better. Official Google Play updates should be the default.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Android Auto version reportedly fixed the 2026 disconnection problem?

Google reported stable Android Auto build 17.2.662638 as the corrective release for the documented 17.2 rollout problem. Beta users were directed to build 17.3.662813. Install the newest version Google Play offers rather than manually downloading an APK.

Why does Google Maps work on my phone but not through Android Auto?

The problem may involve the Android Auto connection, a corrupted pairing, Maps cache, the USB cable, or vehicle receiver firmware. Update both apps, clear the Maps cache, forget and reconnect the car, test another short data cable if wired, and check the head unit’s firmware.

Will clearing Google Maps storage fix Android Auto?

It may remove app state, but it is more disruptive than clearing the cache and is not a guaranteed Android Auto fix. Start with Settings > Apps > Maps > Storage & cache > Clear cache.

Can I use Waze while Google Maps is broken?

Yes. Waze is a compatible Android Auto navigation app and can serve as a temporary alternative when Android Auto connects but Google Maps navigation does not work.

Should I downgrade Android Auto with an APK?

Only as an advanced last resort, if at all. User reports about older builds are inconsistent, and sideloading can create security, compatibility, and update problems. Use official Google Play updates first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Update Android Auto first, then restart the phone and infotainment system. For Maps-specific failures, clear the Maps cache and verify location and mobile data. For connection failures, forget and reconnect the car, replace a suspect wired USB cable, and update aftermarket receiver firmware. If the issue persists, document the exact versions and hardware before escalating—because a recent Android Auto regression does not mean every Google Maps or vehicle system is defective.
