There is no reliable, current price for “a rare Pontiac” as a category: value depends on the exact engine, body style, transmission, condition, documentation and sale terms. The evidence supports a shortlist of scarce Pontiac configurations and useful dated guide and auction figures—not a definitive top ten or a guaranteed present-day valuation for every car.
Which Pontiac muscle cars are the rarest?
Production counts describe different things. A total for a model is not the same as the count for a specific engine, body and transmission combination. The figures below are sourced examples, not a ranked list; where a source does not establish a comparable count or price for the exact configuration, it is identified as not stated.
| Configuration | Production evidence | Sports Car Market guide figure |
|---|---|---|
| 1962 Catalina Super Duty, including SD-421 and SD-389 cars | Hot Rod reported production records indicating 162 Super-Duty Catalinas: 155 with the SD-421 and seven with the SD-389. | For the broader 1962 Catalina Super Duty, 162 built; $145,500 median in the 2022 Pocket Price Guide. No separate guide median for the SD-389 and SD-421 subgroups is stated. |
| 1962 Grand Prix Super Duty | Hot Rod reported 16 Grand Prixs among 179 Super-Duty Pontiacs for 1962; the records left one car unaccounted for. | 16 built; $169,500 median in the 2022 Pocket Price Guide. |
| 1963 Catalina Super Duty | 77 built, according to Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide. | $274,500 median in the 2022 Pocket Price Guide. |
| 1963 Tempest Super Duty | 11 built, according to Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide. | $450,000 median in the 2022 Pocket Price Guide. |
| 1969 GTO Judge Ram Air IV | Sports Car Market lists 6,725 1969 Judges overall and 108 Judge convertibles; the sources here do not establish a production count for the exact Ram Air IV configuration. | The 2022 guide advises a 75% Ram Air IV adjustment on relevant 1967–69 entries. This is a guide adjustment, not a measured premium on every sale. |
| 1970 GTO Judge convertible, Ram Air IV, automatic | Mecum reports 168 Judge convertibles in 1970, 17 with Ram Air IV, and seven combining Ram Air IV with an automatic transmission. | For the broader 1970 Judge convertible, the 2022 guide lists a $137,500 median. A separate guide value for the seven-car combination is not stated. |
| 1969 Trans Am Ram Air IV | A production count for this exact configuration is not stated in the sources cited here. | A separate 2022 guide median for this exact configuration is not stated. |
| 1973 Trans Am SD-455 | RM Sotheby’s 2014 catalogue states that 252 SD-455 Trans Ams were produced, including 180 automatics. | $67,500 median in the 2022 Pocket Price Guide. |
| 1973 Firebird Formula SD-455 | 43 built, according to Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide. | $49,500 median in the 2022 Pocket Price Guide. |
| 1974 Firebird Formula SD-455 | 58 built, according to Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide. | $59,000 median in the 2022 Pocket Price Guide. |
The early Super Duties show why configuration-level counts matter. Hot Rod’s 2008 account of production records identifies 179 Super-Duty Pontiacs for 1962, including 162 Catalinas and 16 Grand Prixs, with one car unaccounted for. It also recounts a period Motor Trend test in which Roger Huntington recorded a 13.9-second quarter-mile at 107 mph; that is a historical test result, not a modern performance claim.
How much is a rare Pontiac muscle car worth?
The 2022 Sports Car Market figures in the table are historical price-guide medians, not current asking prices or promised sale proceeds. They offer a point of comparison for several models, but they cannot be applied mechanically to an individual car—especially to a rare engine, body and transmission combination for which the guide does not give a separate figure.

Completed auction results provide evidence about particular cars at particular events. They should not be read as a clean price trend: the cars, condition, provenance, currencies and sale terms differ.
| Car and event | Reported result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 1973 Trans Am Super Duty, Miller & Miller Auctions, June 2025 | CA$341,000, including buyer’s premium. | The auction house described this example as a former Toronto Auto Show feature car, pristine and unrestored. Its provenance and condition make it a specific comparison, not a baseline for every SD-455. |
| 1973 SD-455 Trans Am, Gooding & Christie’s, 2013 | US$165,000. | A separate car and auction event, more than a decade before the Miller & Miller result. |
| 1969 Trans Am Ram Air IV, Mecum sale recorded by Marque, January 2023 | US$440,000. | An individual result recorded by Marque’s auction aggregation. |
| 1969 Trans Am Ram Air IV, Mecum sale recorded by Marque, May 2024 | US$357,500. | A separate auction result; it does not establish a guaranteed current value. |
| 1973 Trans Am Super Duty, Mecum sale recorded by Marque, May 2024 | US$286,000. | A separate auction result from the 2013 Gooding & Christie’s sale and the 2025 Canadian sale. |
| 1974 Trans Am Super Duty, Mecum sale recorded by Marque, January 2025 | US$203,500. | This is a Trans Am result, not a value for the 1974 SD-455 Firebird Formula. |
Marque aggregates auction results and reports that its United States Trans Am dataset covers sales through August 31, 2026. Its figures are useful leads to individual events, but a buyer or seller should examine each lot’s condition, description and sale terms rather than treating the aggregation as a valuation of a particular car.

What changes the value of a rare Pontiac?
- Exact specification: Confirm the engine, body style and transmission. Mecum’s 1970 Judge figures illustrate the distinction: seven cars combined Ram Air IV and automatic, a much narrower group than all Judge convertibles.
- Authenticity and matching components: Establish whether the fitted engine is documented for the car. Hagerty advises that documentation should support the engine currently fitted to a high-horsepower Catalina; an engine swap or uncertain identity can change how a car is judged.
- Documentation and provenance: Records can help establish identity and history. RM Sotheby’s catalogue for a Trans Am describes a car accompanied by Pontiac Historic Services (PHS) documentation, ownership history, title and window sticker.
- Condition and originality: Restoration quality, originality, mileage and the quality of surviving components distinguish otherwise similar cars. The 2025 Miller & Miller SD-455 result came with unusually strong condition and provenance claims, which should not be assumed for another example.
- Sale terms: Check whether a quoted figure is a guide estimate, hammer price or final total, and whether it includes the buyer’s premium. Keep Canadian-dollar and U.S.-dollar results separate.
How to use the figures when evaluating a car
- Identify the car precisely. Record its model year, model, body style, claimed engine and transmission. Do not substitute a model-wide production total for the count of the specific combination.
- Verify the identity and equipment. Review factory and historical records, including PHS documentation where available, and assess whether the installed engine is supported by the car’s paperwork.
- Choose relevant comparisons. Prefer the same configuration and similar originality, restoration quality and provenance. Treat a guide median as historical context and an auction result as evidence about that individual car.
- Compare like with like. Note sale date, currency, venue and buyer’s premium. A Canadian-dollar total including premium is not directly interchangeable with a U.S.-dollar result whose terms differ or are not stated.
- Set a present-day value from current evidence. The dated figures here do not provide a complete current valuation matrix across these configurations. A defensible estimate for a specific car requires recent, closely matched sales and an assessment of that car’s condition and documentation.
