Ford service bulletins document two specific issues in defined Super Duty production groups with the 6.2L Boss V8: oil consumption in some 2015–2016 trucks and cold-start crank/no-start in some 2017–2018 trucks. They do not establish three common problems across the engine family, or show how often either condition occurs. Check your truck’s VIN and build date before treating either bulletin as applicable.
What the evidence says about 6.2L Boss problems
The two Ford bulletins below describe service conditions for particular F-Super Duty model years and build dates—not universal defects, recalls, or prevalence studies. Neither provides a failure rate, and the conditions affect separate cohorts. Ford’s published guidance does not support naming a third engine-wide “common problem.”
| Condition | Ford bulletin application | Reported symptom or trigger | Ford’s stated service action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Excessive oil consumption | Some 2015–2016 F-Super Duty 250/350 6.2L trucks built March 1, 2014 through September 8, 2015 (TSB 15-0161, October 22, 2015) | Oil consumption attributed to an internally leaking baffle in the right-side valve cover | Replace the right-side valve cover, install 16 new spark plugs, and check and correct engine-oil level. Ford TSB 15-0161 |
| Cold-start crank/no-start | Some 2017–2018 F-Super Duty 6.2L vehicles built on or before May 2, 2018 (TSB 18-2188, June 29, 2018) | Fuel-fouled spark plugs during cold starts below 50°F (10°C); crank/no-start, sometimes with misfire codes | PCM software reprogramming and a dechoke-flooding procedure; check oil and change oil/filter where applicable. Ford TSB 18-2188 |
Oil consumption: some 2015–2016 F-250 and F-350 trucks
Which trucks are covered
Ford TSB 15-0161 applies to some 2015–2016 F-Super Duty 250/350 vehicles equipped with the 6.2L and built from March 1, 2014 through September 8, 2015. The bulletin identifies an internally leaking baffle in the right-side valve cover as the cause of excessive oil consumption. A matching model year alone is not enough to establish applicability; have a Ford dealer or qualified repair shop check the VIN and build date.
What Ford specifies for the repair
For the condition covered by the bulletin, Ford calls for replacing the right-side valve cover, installing all 16 new spark plugs, and checking and correcting the engine-oil level. The bulletin lists valve cover part CC3Z-6582-A and spark plug part CYFS-12-FP. Part numbers can be superseded, so verify current numbers and fitment for the truck before ordering.

Ford’s bulletin describes a professional repair and says its procedures should not be performed by do-it-yourselfers. Warranty or extended-service coverage depends on applicable program terms and causal-part eligibility; the bulletin does not guarantee coverage for every vehicle today.
Cold-start crank/no-start: some 2017–2018 Super Duty trucks
Symptoms and conditions
Ford TSB 18-2188 covers some 2017–2018 F-Super Duty vehicles with the 6.2L built on or before May 2, 2018. It describes an engine that cranks but does not start, with or without DTC P0300, P0301–P0308, and/or P0316. Ford associates the concern with spark-plug fuel fouling during cold starts below 50°F (10°C).

Ford also cautions that “E85 fuel usage can contribute to poor starts, drivability concerns or inability to start the engine.” Consult the vehicle’s Owner’s Manual for its fuel guidance; the bulletin does not make this condition applicable to every truck using E85.
What the bulletin directs technicians to do
The repair includes reprogramming the powertrain control module (PCM) and performing a dechoke-flooding procedure. Ford also directs technicians to check the oil and, where applicable, change the oil and filter. A matching symptom does not by itself confirm this bulletin is the cause; diagnosis should account for the truck’s VIN, build date, codes, and circumstances.

Why there is no supported third “common problem” here
Claims about other failures—such as valve springs, ignition coils, or exhaust manifolds—should not be presented as common 6.2L-wide defects without evidence that establishes the specific application and prevalence. The Ford bulletins cited here substantiate two defined service conditions, not a third broad engine problem. Routine inspection or maintenance may matter to reliability, but it is not evidence of a documented defect.
How to check whether a bulletin applies to your truck
- Identify the truck. Confirm the model year, engine, and whether it is an F-Super Duty 250/350; the bulletins do not cover every vehicle fitted with a 6.2L.
- Check production details. Compare the build date with the oil-consumption window or the cold-start bulletin’s cutoff.
- Ask for a VIN-specific applicability check. A Ford dealer or qualified repair shop can confirm whether the bulletin applies and whether a current repair or part supersession is relevant.
- Describe the symptom and conditions. For oil use, provide service and oil-level history. For a no-start, note outside temperature, fuel used, and any stored diagnostic codes.
- Get a diagnosis before authorizing work. A TSB is service guidance, not a finding that every vehicle with similar symptoms has the same cause. Ask the shop to explain its diagnosis and any warranty or extended-service coverage determination.
Spark plugs and fitment
Ford’s 2015 F-250–550 Owner’s Manual lists CYFS12FP/SP-526 for its 6.2L V8 application and says replacement plugs should meet Ford material and design specifications. The oil-consumption bulletin separately lists CYFS-12-FP for its specified repair. Verify the exact plug and any superseding number for the vehicle’s year and VIN rather than assuming one listing fits every 6.2L. See the 2015 Ford F-250–550 Owner’s Manual.
