There is no authoritative, measured list of 75 American cars that collectors most wish they owned. “Rare” can mean a low production run, few surviving examples, or an unusual configuration; desirability also depends on history, significance, condition, and provenance. The documented cars below show why a small number of American automobiles stand out—and what evidence a credible longer list would need.
What makes a rare American car desirable?
Rarity alone does not establish a car’s importance or value. Christie’s collector-car guidance notes that there is no unanimous definition of a collector car; factors can include rarity, significance, production history, performance and technical features, provenance, condition, and desirability. Those criteria are more useful than treating a list as a definitive ranking.
It also matters what a rarity claim counts. “One of 98 built” describes reported production, while “one of three surviving” describes known survivors. A rare factory configuration is different again, as is a particular car made notable by its ownership or competition history.
Christie’s collector-car buying guidance recommends researching a car’s history, owners, servicing, restoration, alterations, and event record, alongside a physical inspection. It also suggests consulting a mechanic for a thorough examination. Those checks help establish what a specific example is, rather than relying on a model name or a rarity claim alone.

Documented American cars that illustrate the appeal
These examples are not a ranked top five or a substitute for a verified list of 75. They illustrate different kinds of collector interest: competition history, limited production, surviving examples, factory equipment, and notable ownership.
1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe
The ex-Carroll Shelby Daytona Coupe sold for $42.9 million at auction in August 2026, according to Gooding Christie’s, which reported the result as a new auction record for an American car. Its competition identity and direct connection to Carroll Shelby make this a particularly notable individual car. The result is a reported sale price, not a typical value for the model or a guarantee of what another example would bring.

1930 Cadillac V-16 Two-Passenger Coupe by Fleetwood
RM Sotheby’s described this body style as one of 98 built in its 2015 Hershey sale announcement. That is the auction house’s production figure as reported in 2015; it is not a count of surviving cars. The same announcement noted that the car received a second-in-class award at the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, a distinction tied to that individual example.
1933 Pierce-Arrow Twelve Convertible Coupe Roadster
In its 2015 Hershey announcement, RM Sotheby’s described the car as one of three surviving examples and said its history was known from new. “One of three surviving” is a reported survivor count, not the original production total. The documented history is a separate reason the particular car is compelling to collectors.

1937 Cord 812 Supercharged Phaeton
RM Sotheby’s listed an authentic factory-supercharged example in its 2015 announcement. The specification makes clear why configuration matters: a factory-supercharged Cord is not interchangeable with every 812. That source does not establish a production or survival count for the configuration, so none should be inferred from the example’s description.
1935 Duesenberg SSJ
Gooding Christie’s identified the ex-Gary Cooper 1935 SSJ as the previous American-car auction record holder before the Daytona Coupe’s 2026 sale. It sold for $22 million in 2018, according to the auction house. The figure is a dated result for that particular car, distinguished by its provenance; it is not a current estimate for all SSJs.

How to judge a longer list of “wish list” cars
A useful list should show its evidence entry by entry, rather than implying that an unverified set of 75 reflects a universal collector consensus. For each model or individual car, check:
- Era and body style: Identify the precise model year and configuration, not just the marque.
- Production versus survival: Label factory production figures and survivor estimates separately, and name who reported them and when.
- Historical or engineering importance: Explain a documented competition role, technical feature, or place in automotive history.
- Provenance: State why ownership or event history matters to the specific example, where that history is documented.
- Originality and condition: Distinguish factory specification from later modifications, restoration, or replacement parts.
- Price context: Date auction results and identify the car sold; do not present a one-off result as a model-wide value.
For a specific candidate, auction catalogues can provide specialist descriptions and records to investigate further. Their claims should still be read as dated descriptions of the offered car, not universal statements about every example.

What museum collections can—and cannot—show
The Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum says its collection contains more than 75 historically significant cars spanning 1908 through 1970. Its collection includes marques such as Corvette and Ford, but the museum’s total is not evidence that any separate list of 75 rare cars is complete or authoritative.
The Martin Auto Museum reports a collection of 207 vehicles, from 1886 to today. Its “Muscle & Speed” era, covering 1960–1979, includes 55 vehicles. These are useful snapshots of how museums organize automotive history, not rarity counts or rankings of collector demand.
Why an exact ranking of 75 is not established
No published statistic here measures which 75 American cars collectors most wish they owned, and no authoritative lineup validates those exact 75 entries. The five documented examples above support specific, dated claims; they do not fill out a verified 75-car roster. Any such list should be presented as a curated selection and should substantiate each claimed production figure, survivor count, historical distinction, or provenance independently.
