Mazda has built four MX-5 Miata generations for the North American market: NA, NB, NC, and ND. They all use the same basic recipe—front engine, rear-wheel drive, two seats, and a manual-transmission-friendly character—but they suit different buyers.
This ranking weighs driving feel, weight, chassis balance, performance, comfort, safety, reliability, availability, and how closely each generation follows the original lightweight-roadster brief. The result is not a ranking of horsepower alone. The NC is more powerful than some earlier Miatas, and the NA is the most famous, but neither fact automatically makes either car the best one to own.

The ranking at a glance
| Rank | Generation | North American model years | Best known for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ND | 2016–present | Best overall blend of lightness, performance, refinement, and safety |
| 2 | NB | 1999–2005 | Best used-buy balance |
| 3 | NA | 1990–1997 | Most iconic and purest vintage-roadster experience |
| 4 | NC | 2006–2015 | Most practical and underrated |
The NC finishes last here, but that does not make it a bad Miata. It is simply the generation that moved furthest from the original car’s tiny, delicate feel.

4. NC: Third generation (2006–2015)
The NC is the largest and heaviest Miata generation. That added size brought real advantages: a roomier cabin, stronger crash structure, more usable storage, a six-speed manual, a 2.0-liter engine, and the option of Mazda’s first power-retractable hardtop. It also made the car feel less like a lightweight toy than the NA and NB.
#1 Best Overall
- Authentic 1:64 Scale: Meticulously crafted 1:64 scale die-cast model of the iconic Mazda MX-5 Miata roadster.
- Detailed Design: Captures the sleek lines and curves of the real-life Miata with remarkable accuracy.
- Eye-Catching Red Finish: Vibrant red paint job adds a touch of sportiness to this miniature collectible.
- Compact Size: Measuring just a few inches, this tiny Miata is perfect for display or playtime fun.
- Collectible Value: A must-have for Matchbox and die-cast car enthusiasts alike.
Why it ranks fourth
- Early cars can feel tall, soft, and prone to excessive body roll.
- The additional mass dulls some of the low-speed delicacy associated with earlier Miatas.
- The power-retractable hardtop adds convenience but also weight and mechanical complexity.
- Its styling and dimensions do not communicate the same minimalist roadster brief as the other generations.
Calling the NC “fat and slow” is inaccurate, however. A 2006 NC weighed about 2,425 pounds and produced 167 horsepower, while a later NB weighed roughly 2,375 pounds and made 142 horsepower. The NC has more engine, stronger brakes, a more modern structure, and considerably more cabin room.
Which NC should you seek?
Later NC3 cars, particularly Club models with factory Bilstein dampers, are the enthusiast favorites. They address much of the early car’s soft suspension character and can make excellent autocross, track-day, and back-road cars. The NC is also arguably the best bargain for a taller driver who cannot comfortably fit in an NA or NB.
NC inspection points
Check early cars for tired dampers, worn bushings, excessive ride height, neglected suspension work, and corrosion. On any NC, inspect the underside carefully if the car has lived where road salt is used. A clean service history matters more than a desirable trim badge.
Best for: taller drivers, buyers who want a more usable cabin, and enthusiasts seeking an affordable performance platform.
3. NA: First generation (1990–1997)
The NA is the Miata that established the modern affordable roadster formula. It debuted at the Chicago Auto Show on February 10, 1989, went on sale in the United States as a 1990 model, and used pop-up headlights, a simple cabin, rear-wheel drive, and a curb weight of just over 2,000 pounds in early form.
It remains the most visually recognizable Miata and delivers the strongest vintage-roadster sensation. The steering is light, the shifter is short and satisfying, and the low mass makes ordinary roads entertaining without requiring high speeds.

NA engine changes
| Model years | Engine | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1990–1993 | 1.6-liter four-cylinder | 116 hp |
| 1994–1995 | 1.8-liter four-cylinder | 128 hp |
| 1996–1997 | 1.8-liter four-cylinder | 133 hp |
The 1994 update was more than an engine swap. Mazda also fitted a larger clutch, output shaft, ring gear, brakes, fuel tank, and additional chassis bracing. Those changes make later 1.8-liter cars attractive choices when condition and price are comparable.

The NA is now more than 25 years old. Age has become a larger ownership factor than the original design. Clean, unmodified cars are increasingly collectible, while neglected examples can require extensive structural and mechanical work. An NA is the most charming Miata, but not automatically the best Miata to buy.
NA problems to check before purchase
- Rust: inspect the fenders, rocker panels, door bottoms, frame rails, subframes, trunk shock towers, and other structural areas. Surface rust can be repaired; structural corrosion can make the car uneconomical.
- Short-nose crankshaft: some 1990–1991 cars used this design. An incorrectly installed crank bolt can damage the crankshaft and engine.
- Soft top and rear window: the plastic rear window can yellow, crack, or become opaque. Examine the top hardware and mounting points as well.
- Aged rubber and wiring: hoses, suspension bushings, seals, electrical connectors, and weatherstripping may all need replacement regardless of mileage.
Best for: buyers who value character, originality, pop-up headlights, and the purest connection to the first-generation formula.
2. NB: Second generation (1999–2005)
The NB is the strongest all-around used Miata recommendation. It keeps the NA’s compact dimensions and direct responses while improving rigidity, refinement, and everyday usability. The fixed headlights are less distinctive than the NA’s pop-ups, but the tradeoff is a stiffer, more mature car.
The NB also brought a glass rear window to the soft top, more power, later variable valve timing, and the factory-turbocharged Mazdaspeed MX-5. It is light enough to feel playful but new enough that finding a usable example is generally easier than finding a rust-free NA.
NB versions worth considering
- 1999–2000 NB: simple early cars with the classic NB shape. Check carefully for thrust-bearing problems.
- 2001–2005 NB2: facelifted cars with later technical improvements and a strong mix of performance and value.
- 2004–2005 Mazdaspeed MX-5: the only factory-turbocharged Miata sold in North America. It is quick and collectible, but modifications, hard use, and turbo-related wear deserve close inspection.
NB buying cautions
Some 1999–2000 cars developed thrust-bearing failure. A rattle with the clutch depressed or while revving should prompt further investigation. Clutch chatter is also reported particularly on 2001 and some 2002 cars; a clutch replacement is the usual repair.
Rank #3
Rust remains the major threat, especially on cars exposed to winter salt. Check the same structural areas that matter on an NA, then inspect suspension bushings, dampers, ball joints, and other rubber components. A healthy NB with factory-like geometry is usually a better purchase than a cheaper car covered in questionable modifications.
Best for: almost anyone shopping for an older Miata, especially drivers who want the NA’s feel with better refinement and fewer age-related compromises.
1. ND: Fourth generation (2016–present)
The ND takes first place because it restores the lightweight philosophy without requiring the buyer to accept 1990s safety, comfort, or reliability compromises. It is compact, rear-wheel drive, available with a six-speed manual, and much more precise than the NC. It also provides modern braking, stability control, cabin technology, and safety equipment.
Recommended Free Tools
The RF retractable-fastback is an ND body style, not a separate generation. Its roof gives the car a distinctive fastback profile and a more enclosed-feeling cabin, while the standard soft top provides the lighter, more traditional roadster experience.
The important ND powertrain split
| Model years | Engine output | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 2016–2018 | 155 hp, 148 lb-ft | Original North American 2.0-liter ND tune |
| 2019–present | 181 hp, 151 lb-ft | Revised engine, 7,500-rpm redline; commonly called ND2 |
The 2019 update is an improvement within the ND generation, not a fifth generation. For buyers who prioritize acceleration and high-rpm character, the 2019-and-newer cars are the obvious target. Earlier cars remain rewarding and are often less expensive.
What the 2026 Miata offers
Mazda’s U.S. 2026 lineup remains ND-based. It uses a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder with 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, rear-wheel drive, and an available six-speed manual. Sport and Club trims are manual-only; Grand Touring can be ordered with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic.

ND recall check
Certain 2016–2023 MX-5 Miatas were included in NHTSA recall 24V-695, also identified as Mazda recall 6924I. A software error in the sophisticated air bag sensor control module could cause front airbags to deploy with excessive force. The recall covered 77,670 U.S. vehicles built from April 20, 2015, through November 2, 2023. Verify completion by VIN before buying any affected car.
Best for: drivers who want the best combination of classic Miata involvement and modern performance, safety, comfort, and dependability.

“The RF is a fifth generation”
It is not. The RF is a retractable-fastback version of the fourth-generation ND, introduced for the 2017 model year.
“Every ND has 181 horsepower”
U.S. 2016–2018 cars use the 155-horsepower engine. The 181-horsepower version arrived for 2019.
“The NC is a bad Miata”
The NC is heavier and larger, but it also offers the most cabin space, a 2.0-liter engine, a six-speed transmission, stronger brakes, and a modern structure. A well-kept late NC Club can be an excellent performance car.

- Detailed Replica: With intricate details like the headlights, taillights, and interior, this die-cast captures the essence of the real car
- Compact Size: Measuring approximately 3 inches long, this 1:64 scale model is sized for play or display
“Any NA is better than any NB”
That is an emotional preference, not a sound buying rule. The NA wins on historical significance and visual charm. The NB is generally sharper, easier to use, and less compromised by age.
“Mileage is the deciding factor”
On an NA or NB, structural rust, accident damage, modifications, and maintenance history can matter far more than the odometer. A higher-mileage car with documented care is often safer than a low-mileage car that sat outside or was poorly modified.
Which Miata generation should you buy?
| Your priority | Best choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall | ND, especially 2019 or newer | Modern performance and safety with low weight |

| Most cabin space | NC | Roomiest generation and friendliest fit for taller drivers |
| Best track-day value | Late NC Club or NB | Good chassis support and a large aftermarket |
FAQ
Which Mazda MX-5 Miata generation is the best?
The ND is the best overall because it combines the Miata’s lightweight rear-wheel-drive character with the strongest performance, safety, refinement, and daily usability. The NB is the better value-focused used-car recommendation.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIs the NA Miata better than the NB?
The NA is more iconic and has a purer vintage-roadster feel, but the NB is usually the better car to own. It is more rigid, more refined, easier to use, and generally less affected by age when both cars are in similar condition.
Which Miata generation should taller drivers buy?
The NC generally offers the most usable cabin of the four generations. Prospective buyers should still sit in the car and test the steering-wheel, seat, and pedal relationship because individual fit varies.
What should I inspect when buying an older Miata?
Prioritize structural rust, accident repairs, service history, suspension wear, soft-top condition, and modifications. On early NAs, also investigate short-nose crankshaft concerns; on 1999–2000 NBs, check for symptoms of thrust-bearing failure. Verify open recalls by VIN on newer cars.
The Bottom Line
For most buyers, the ranking is straightforward: the ND is the best overall Miata, the NB is the smartest older used buy, the NA is the most memorable, and the NC is the practical underdog.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCondition can overturn the order in the used market. A rust-free, maintained NC is a better purchase than a corroded NB, and a structurally sound NA is worth more than a low-mileage example with hidden damage. Buy the healthiest car you can find first, then choose the generation that matches your priorities.
