10 Cars With 2JZ Engines You Probably Didn’t Know About

The Toyota 2JZ powered more than the Supra. Discover 10 overlooked factory-built Toyota cars—including the Aristo, Origin, Crown, Mark II, and Altezza Gita—that used the famous inline-six.

The Toyota 2JZ is usually associated with the Supra, but Toyota installed versions of its famous inline-six in a much wider range of cars. Some were luxury sedans, some were understated executive cars, and one was a limited-production anniversary model built in approximately 1,000 examples.

This list covers factory-built Toyota models, not engine-swapped cars or separate Lexus entries. It also includes the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE, the direct-injection 2JZ-FSE, and—where relevant—the twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE. Most of these cars were sold in Japan, which is why they remain unfamiliar to many enthusiasts outside the import scene.

First, not every 2JZ is a twin-turbo engine

The 2JZ is a 2,997 cc inline-six engine family. The best-known version is the twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE, but most of the cars below used the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE. Later Toyota models also received the direct-injection 2JZ-FSE.

Engine Basic description Where it appears on this list
2JZ-GE Naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline-six Most entries
2JZ-GTE Twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six Toyota Aristo
2JZ-FSE Direct-injection 3.0-liter inline-six Toyota Brevis and later Toyota Crowns

There is another common misunderstanding around Toyota’s chassis codes. A JZX badge does not automatically mean a 2JZ. Many JZX cars used a 2.5-liter 1JZ-GE or 1JZ-GTE. In general, the 3.0-liter versions—such as JZX91 and JZX101 applications—are the ones to check for a 2JZ-GE.

1. Toyota Altezza Gita

The Altezza Gita was the wagon version of the Toyota Altezza, launched in Japan on July 2, 2001. Its top-level AS300 grade used the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE, producing 220 PS at 5,800 rpm.

That makes the Gita the Toyota-badged counterpart to the Lexus IS 300 SportCross, but the Toyota nameplate is much less familiar in many markets. Toyota also offered the 3.0-liter Gita with full-time four-wheel drive, giving buyers a practical wagon with a smooth six-cylinder engine rather than the four-cylinder powerplants more commonly associated with the Altezza.

When shopping for one, the AS300 designation matters. Smaller Altezza Gita versions did not use the 2JZ.

2. Toyota Aristo

The Aristo was one of the earliest production cars to receive the 2JZ. Toyota introduced the first generation on October 31, 1991, with the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE in the 3.0 Q and the twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE in the 3.0 V.

Both engines displaced 2,997 cc. Toyota rated the first-generation 2JZ-GE at 230 PS and the 2JZ-GTE at 280 PS. The Aristo therefore offered the same basic engine family in both luxury-sedan and high-performance forms long before the model became a popular tuning platform.

The second-generation Aristo arrived on August 27, 1997. Its engine lineup continued the split: the S300 used the 2JZ-GE, while the performance-oriented V300 used the 2JZ-GTE. The V300 is the Japanese-market relative of the Lexus GS 300/GS 400-era cars, but it is the Toyota badge and trim designation that matter when identifying an imported example.

3. Toyota Brevis

The Brevis was a compact luxury sedan introduced on June 4, 2001. Its rear-wheel-drive JCG11 version used the direct-injection 2JZ-FSE, producing 220 PS at 5,600 rpm.

This is an easy car to misidentify because the smaller 2.5-liter Brevis models used the 1JZ-FSE. The 3.0-liter engine is tied to the JCG11 model code, so checking the chassis and engine information is more reliable than assuming every Brevis has a 2JZ.

Toyota positioned the Brevis as a younger, slightly smaller companion to the Progrès. It was never marketed as a Supra substitute; its appeal was quiet luxury, rear-wheel drive, and a refined six-cylinder engine. Production ended in May 2007.

4. Toyota Chaser

The Chaser is famous for the turbocharged 1JZ-GTE-powered Tourer V, but that reputation can obscure the model’s other six-cylinder option. The fifth-generation Chaser, released on October 29, 1992, offered a 3.0-liter 2JZ-GE in the Avante G. Toyota rated it at 220 PS at 6,200 rpm.

The sixth-generation Chaser, introduced on September 5, 1996, retained the 3.0-liter 2JZ-GE in the Avante G. This later engine used VVT-i and produced 220 PS at 5,600 rpm.

That distinction is important for buyers and enthusiasts: a Chaser can be a factory 2JZ car without being a Tourer V. The Avante G was the more luxury-oriented 3.0-liter model, while the headline performance version relied on the smaller turbocharged 1JZ-GTE.

5. Toyota Cresta

The Cresta shared much of its mechanical family with the Chaser and Mark II, and it followed a similar engine strategy. The fourth-generation Cresta, released on October 29, 1992, offered the 3.0-liter 2JZ-GE in the Super Lucent G. Output was 220 PS at 5,800 rpm.

The fifth-generation car launched on September 5, 1996, and continued with a VVT-i-equipped 2JZ-GE in the 3.0-liter Exceed G. This version produced 220 PS at 5,600 rpm.

Like the naturally aspirated Chaser, the 2JZ Cresta was primarily a comfortable executive sedan rather than a drift-focused performance model. That makes clean, original examples particularly interesting: they deliver the 2JZ’s displacement and refinement without the inflated reputation and pricing attached to turbocharged JZX cars.

6. Toyota Crown

The Toyota Crown has used many engines across its long history, including multiple 2JZ variants. The ninth-generation Crown hardtop, released on October 28, 1991, offered a 3.0-liter 2JZ-GE in the Royal Saloon G. Toyota listed output at 230 PS at 6,000 rpm.

Later Crown generations also received the direct-injection 2JZ-FSE. Toyota’s 2000 Crown lineup listed the engine in several 3.0-liter Royal Saloon and Athlete grades, while some four-wheel-drive versions used the 2JZ-GE instead.

Consequently, “Toyota Crown with a 2JZ” is not one precise specification. The generation, grade, drivetrain, and engine code all matter. A Crown badge alone does not tell you whether the car has a GE or FSE, nor whether it is rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

7. Toyota Crown Majesta

The Crown Majesta was positioned above the regular Crown and below the Celsior in Toyota’s luxury range. It was known for V8 power and advanced equipment, but the first-generation Majesta also had a 3.0-liter 2JZ-GE producing 230 PS at 6,000 rpm.

The first generation launched on October 28, 1991. Toyota’s second-generation Majesta, released on August 31, 1995, retained a 3.0-liter 2JZ-GE, now equipped with VVT-i and rated at 220 PS.

The V8 cars tend to dominate discussion of the Majesta, which is why the inline-six versions are easy to overlook. They offer a less obvious route into Toyota’s large luxury-sedan lineup while retaining the service familiarity and aftermarket interest associated with the JZ family.

8. Toyota Mark II

The seventh-generation Mark II, launched on October 29, 1992, used the 3.0-liter 2JZ-GE in the luxury-oriented Grande G. Toyota rated the engine at 220 PS at 5,800 rpm.

When the eighth-generation Mark II arrived on September 5, 1996, the Grande G continued with a VVT-i-equipped 2JZ-GE producing 220 PS at 5,600 rpm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As with the Chaser, the famous turbocharged model was not the 2JZ version. The Mark II Tourer V used the turbocharged 1JZ-GTE, while the 2JZ-equipped Grande G was designed as a more relaxed, upscale sedan. A genuine factory 2JZ Mark II is therefore a different proposition from the car most people picture when they hear “JZX.”

9. Toyota Origin

The Toyota Origin is arguably the rarest and most unusual car on this list. Released on November 1, 2000, it was a limited-production commemorative sedan built to mark Toyota’s domestic production milestone. Approximately 1,000 examples were produced.

Under its distinctive bodywork was a Progrès-based chassis and a 3.0-liter 2JZ-GE producing 215 PS at 5,800 rpm. The styling drew heavily from the first-generation Toyota Crown and included rear-hinged rear doors.

The Origin is not a high-performance car in the Supra sense. Its significance is that Toyota combined a deliberately nostalgic, hand-finished-looking body with a modern rear-wheel-drive platform and a factory 2JZ. Finding one is considerably more difficult than finding an Aristo, Crown, or Mark II.

10. Toyota Progrès

The Progrès was a compact luxury sedan introduced on May 14, 1998. Its 3.0-liter NC300 grades used the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE, with Toyota listing 215 PS at 5,800 rpm.

The smaller NC250 used a 1JZ-GE, so the NC300 designation is the key identifier for a factory 2JZ Progrès. Toyota offered the model with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and production continued until June 2007.

The Progrès shared its platform with the second-generation Aristo and tenth-generation Crown. It was aimed at buyers who wanted compact dimensions and premium equipment rather than a sporty image. That understated character is precisely what makes it interesting today: it is a genuine 2JZ sedan that most people would never identify by sight.

How to verify a factory 2JZ car

  1. Check the model and grade. Look for identifiers such as AS300, S300, V300, JCG11, NC300, Grande G, Avante G, or Exceed G, depending on the vehicle.
  2. Confirm the engine code. A 2JZ-GE, 2JZ-GTE, or 2JZ-FSE is different from the 1JZ-GE and 1JZ-GTE used in many visually similar cars.
  3. Inspect the chassis plate and paperwork. Imported Japanese cars may have auction sheets, export certificates, or registration documents that identify the engine and model code.
  4. Do not trust badges alone. Trim badges can be changed, and many JZ-powered cars have been modified or swapped. A physical inspection and documentation check are more useful than a “2JZ” emblem.
  5. Check drivetrain details. Toyota offered several of these models with four-wheel drive, and the engine specification can vary by drivetrain and grade.

Toyota’s own vehicle-lineage database lists the JZ engine family in the Aristo, Altezza Gita, Brevis, Chaser, Cresta, Crown, Crown Majesta, Mark II, Origin, Progrès, Soarer, and Supra. That factory history is why the 2JZ should be viewed as a Toyota engine family—not simply a Supra engine.

FAQ

Which car received the 2JZ before the Supra?

The first-generation Toyota Aristo launched on October 31, 1991, with both the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE and twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE. It was one of the earliest production applications of the engine family.

Are all Toyota JZX cars powered by a 2JZ?

No. Many JZX models used the 2.5-liter 1JZ-GE or 1JZ-GTE. The 3.0-liter versions, including certain JZX91 and JZX101 applications, are the ones generally associated with the 2JZ-GE.

Which cars on this list used the twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE?

The Toyota Aristo used the 2JZ-GTE in its 3.0 V and later V300 grades. Most of the other cars listed here used the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE or, in some cases, the direct-injection 2JZ-FSE.

What is the rarest factory Toyota 2JZ car here?

The Toyota Origin is the rarest entry discussed. Toyota produced approximately 1,000 examples, each combining Progrès-based mechanicals, Crown-inspired styling, and a 2JZ-GE.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The 2JZ was never exclusive to the Supra. Toyota installed it in understated Japanese-market sedans, wagons, luxury cars, and the extremely rare Origin. The Aristo is the standout if you want a factory twin-turbo application, while the Altezza Gita, Progrès, Brevis, Crown, and JZX-family sedans offer less obvious naturally aspirated or direct-injection alternatives.

Before buying, verify the exact grade and engine code. The difference between 2JZ-GE, 2JZ-GTE, 2JZ-FSE, and the frequently substituted 1JZ engines can change the car’s value, performance, parts requirements, and originality.
