A used EV’s battery-health percentage can tell you more about its remaining energy capacity than the odometer can—but “100%” is not proof of original real-world range, and the figure is not measured the same way everywhere. Treat battery state of health (SoH) as one piece of evidence: ask how it was measured, check the car’s warranty, and decide whether its expected range suits your driving.
Why battery health matters more than mileage alone
An odometer records distance driven. Battery state of health estimates how much energy a battery can still hold relative to an initial reference. The OECD/ITF defines SoH as “the amount of energy [a battery] can still hold compared to its initial value” in its 2023 report.

That makes SoH relevant to a used EV’s likely range and value, but it is not a perfect substitute for mileage. A car with fewer kilometres may have a more degraded battery than a higher-mileage car, depending on age, use, climate and other conditions. Conversely, a lower SoH does not automatically make a car unsuitable: what matters is whether the remaining usable range works for you.

Mileage is a recorded distance; SoH is a condition metric whose meaning depends on the definition and test procedure behind it.

What “100% battery health” does—and doesn’t—tell you
It is a reading against a reference, not a promise of range
A 100% result means the test’s reported measure is at its reference level. It does not establish that the vehicle will deliver the same real-world range as when new, or that it will retain that range. Range also depends on the vehicle and driving conditions, while the SoH figure itself may be calculated or measured differently by different providers.
Percentages may not be directly comparable
A 2025 proposal on battery SoH measurement notes that the metric is often reduced to one figure even though definitions can be capacity-based or energy-based. It also says there is no standardized vehicle-level procedure for measuring SoH. A precise-looking percentage therefore needs context: who produced it, what the report means by SoH, and how the test was performed. See the NIST publication on standardized measurement.

There is no universal “good” percentage
The OECD/ITF describes 80% SoH as a commonly used transport end-of-life benchmark, but it is not a physical cutoff or a universal rule that a battery below 80% is unusable. A car’s suitability depends on its actual range and your needs. Warranty thresholds are separate and vary by manufacturer, vehicle, market and terms.
What used-EV data says about age, mileage and SoH
A 2026 analysis by the Centre for Transport Research (CDV) covered 3,171 used vehicles in Czechia, Slovakia and Poland: 2,742 battery-electric vehicles and 429 plug-in hybrids. In that sample, median SoH for BEVs was 96.1% for vehicles up to three years old and 90.0% for those older than six years. Median SoH was 96.0% for BEVs with up to 40,000 km and 90.3% for those above 100,000 km. These are sample results, not predictions for an individual car or global fleet averages. CDV found age more influential than mileage and cautioned that mileage alone does not reliably determine a battery’s condition. Its findings are summarized by the Centre for Transport Research.

Battery aging can reflect both calendar time and cycling—the repeated charging and discharging of the pack. The OECD/ITF discusses battery age, high ambient temperatures, prolonged high or low charge states, and fast charging among relevant factors. A single charging habit cannot, on its own, explain the condition of an individual car.
How to check a used EV’s battery health
- Ask for a vehicle-specific report. Request a recent battery diagnostic tied to the car you are considering, rather than relying on an unsupported seller statement or an unexplained dashboard number.
- Check what the percentage measures. Ask whether the report is capacity- or energy-based, who performed the test, and what procedure produced the result. Since vehicle-level methods are not standardized, the method matters as much as the headline figure.
- Review the report for more than SoH. Read any diagnostic findings or faults included, and ask the provider to explain what they mean for this vehicle. A single percentage cannot stand in for the full report.
- Verify warranty terms for the specific car. Check the exact threshold, time and mileage limits, in-service date, transferability and market terms. Confirm coverage with the manufacturer using the vehicle identification number (VIN).
- Compare the expected range with your own use. Consider your daily driving and regular trips, not just whether the battery clears a particular percentage benchmark.
An OBD-II adapter may be useful to a technically minded owner only if the specific vehicle, adapter and software expose relevant battery data. A diagnostic connection is not, by itself, a validated or universal battery-health test; ask what the tool actually measures and how its result is interpreted.

How to compare two used EVs fairly

What warranty figures can—and cannot—tell you
Warranty thresholds offer a contractual reference, not a universal definition of a healthy battery. For example, BMW of North America’s current page, checked October 8, 2026, lists a 75% SoH capacity-loss threshold and coverage for eight years or 100,000 miles from the in-service date, whichever comes first, for the 2022–2025 BMW Certified EV models listed there. That US program example does not establish terms for other BMW vehicles, other markets or other manufacturers. Check the applicable warranty directly with the manufacturer for the car’s VIN. What a battery-health certificate adds
A certificate can make a seller’s battery claim easier to assess when it identifies the vehicle, explains the measurement and comes from a credible diagnostic process. In a 2026 company announcement, Arval reported issuing more than 30,000 battery SoH certificates before resale and said it partnered with Moba and AVILOO. That is a company-reported figure and partnership, not proof that every certificate provider uses the same method. See Arval’s announcement.

Whatever the provider, read the certificate rather than treating its percentage as a standalone grade. A report is useful when you can understand what it measures and relate the result to the car’s warranty and your range needs.
