Radial engines were fitted to automobiles, so they were not impossible. The more accurate question is why the layout remained unusual in cars. The answer starts with a distinction: early cars such as the Adams-Farwell used rotary engines, while fixed radial-cylinder engines were also designed and tried. Neither layout offered most road cars a clear enough advantage to outweigh its packaging challenges.
Did anyone say radial engines in cars were impossible?
No person or authority in the sources cited here is established as having declared the idea impossible. The historical record instead includes automobiles built with radial-family engines. Their existence shows that the layouts could be made to work in a car; their rarity shows that feasibility and practical appeal are different questions.
One early example is the Adams-Farwell, whose engine was commercially built for automobile propulsion. Later unusual radial-engine car projects are also documented in a specialist gallery. These examples are best described as rare experiments and limited applications, not evidence that radial engines became a normal production-car choice. The available sources do not establish a definitive first, last, or total number of such cars. Engine History’s Adams-Farwell account and the specialist gallery of cars with radial engines document the examples.
Radial and rotary are not the same engine layout
“Radial” is often used loosely in accounts of early automobile engines, but fixed radial and rotary describe different arrangements:

- Wonderfully Detailed Model: Our 5-Cylinder Radial engine model kits feature genuine precision-cast and machined parts in anodized aluminum and stainless steel. Each piece is accurate, detailed and directly correlates to assemblies found in modern, high-performance automobile engines. This is a superb introduction into engineering and mechanics.
- Complete Accessories: The kit contains over 230 parts. Each finely-crafted part is labeled, and packaged in custom foam carriers to ensure they are organized, complete, and undamaged. A clear, full-color instruction manual is included. While the engine is complex, step-by-step instructions – along with some patience – ensure excellent results.
- Simulation Model: A real electric motor inside the starter motor housing drives the 5-Cylinder Radial engine. The crankshaft, rods and pistons can be observed through special viewing windows. You can observe the operation of the 5-Cylinder Radial engine during the whole process. It is not only a beautiful decoration, but also a simulation dynamic model that can simulate the operation of a real 5-Cylinder Radial engine. Even when not in motion, it is an impressive machine to see.
- Excellent Learning Activity: This kit is not recommended for unsupervised children under the age of 14, due to its small parts. However, it provides a great opportunity for adults to spend time with children. The child will learn to understand and follow illustrated instructions, manipulate parts and basic tools, and to know the accomplishment of a job well-done. It fosters an appreciation for the ingenuity in today’s technology as well as the need for it in coming generations.
- Fixed radial: cylinders are arranged around a central crankcase, and the engine stays fixed to the vehicle.
- Rotary: the cylinder assembly rotates around a stationary crankshaft.
The Adams-Farwell used a rotary engine. Calling it a conventional fixed radial without qualification blurs an important mechanical difference. A specialist history of early aircraft engines and a terminology overview explain the distinction; the overview is tertiary, so it is useful for orientation rather than as the sole support for specific historical claims. Fixed radial engines were also seriously considered
Automotive radial history is not limited to rotary engines. The Society of Automotive Engineers published a 1919 paper titled “Fixed Radial Cylinder Engines,” describing designs that had been tried and seen some service. That is evidence of engineering work on fixed radials, not proof of widespread road-car adoption. SAE paper: Fixed Radial Cylinder Engines.

Why did radial engines remain rare in cars?
Packaging made the layout awkward
Placing cylinders around a central crankcase produces a broad engine footprint. That shape can be difficult to fit into the engine compartments of many cars, which are designed around narrower inline or V-type arrangements. The specialist car gallery identifies packaging as a challenge. It is an engineering explanation, not a universal rule: a particular vehicle’s layout could make a radial arrangement more or less practical. Cars with radial engines.
Aircraft needs did not translate directly to road cars
Aircraft and cars impose different installation and cooling demands. A configuration that suits an aircraft does not automatically provide a comparable benefit in a road vehicle, where the available space and surrounding bodywork shape the installation. The sources support this as context for the layout’s limited appeal, not as a single proven cause of its rarity.

There is no verified numerical comparison here
The sources do not provide a controlled, quantitative comparison between radial and inline or V-type car engines. It would therefore be misleading to claim a specific efficiency, weight, power, cost, or reliability disadvantage as the decisive reason. The supported explanation is narrower: the radial layout presented packaging difficulties and did not offer most cars a sufficiently clear, car-specific advantage.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- NINE CYLINDERS AROUND A RADIAL CORE: The circular architecture gives builders a fundamentally different assembly challenge and makes coordinated piston movement visible around the center of the model.
- PROPELLER LINKED TO THE MECHANISM: A rotating propeller connects the internal engine action with an external aviation feature, giving each powered run an immediately recognizable outcome.
- SELECT BETWEEN TWO MOTOR SPEEDS: Dual-speed operation lets owners compare the mechanism at different rates, supporting slow observation as well as a more dynamic display setting.
- 1100 PIECES FOR ADVANCED BUILDERS: The high piece count creates a long-form project that rewards methodical alignment, especially as repeated cylinder sections form a balanced radial arrangement.
- SEE PISTONS WORK AS A GROUP: The completed model demonstrates how multiple cylinders coordinate around a shared center, offering a visual contrast with inline, horizontal, and V-shaped engines.
What the history actually shows
- Radial-family engines were used in automobiles; the concept was not impossible.
- The Adams-Farwell was rotary, not a conventional fixed-radial example.
- Fixed radial-cylinder engines were also designed and tried, as the 1919 SAE paper documents.
- These layouts remained rare in cars. Packaging difficulty and the lack of a clear car-specific advantage are the strongest explanations supported by the cited sources.
- The cited sources do not establish a named person or authority who banned or disproved the concept.
