A fire was reported at Rad Power Bikes’ Huntington Beach, California, store-and-warehouse complex in January 2026, after a November 2025 federal warning about three Rad battery models. The connection is temporal, not established as causal: reporting said the fire’s cause had not been confirmed and did not establish that an affected battery was involved.
What happened at the Huntington Beach warehouse?
Electrek reported that the Huntington Beach Fire Department log recorded a two-alarm structure fire shortly after 7 p.m. local time at the commercial complex housing Rad Power Bikes’ store and warehouse. Rad described the event as a “thermal incident” on Sunday evening while the store was closed, and said it was contained. The company said the cause had not been confirmed. Engadget published an updated report on January 20, 2026. Electrek’s report and Engadget’s updated coverage describe the incident; neither establishes that a recalled or warned-about battery caused it.
What did the CPSC battery warning say?
On November 24, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned that three Rad lithium-ion battery models could unexpectedly ignite and explode, particularly if a battery or its harness had been exposed to water and debris. The warning reported 31 fire reports, including 12 reports of property damage totaling approximately $734,500. Those are figures in the CPSC notice, not a count of fires at the Huntington Beach facility. Read the CPSC warning.
Which Rad batteries and bikes are affected?
The CPSC warning names these battery model numbers: RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y, and HL-RP-S1304. It says the batteries were sold with certain Rad e-bikes or as replacement batteries for these models:

A bike’s model name alone does not confirm that its individual battery is one of the three named models. Check the label on the back or rear of the battery and compare its model number with the CPSC list.
What should owners do with a covered battery?
The CPSC says to stop using a named battery immediately, remove it from the e-bike, and arrange disposal through local hazardous-waste procedures. Do not sell or give the battery away, and do not put it in ordinary trash, curbside or general recycling, or a general used-battery collection box. Contact your municipality’s household hazardous-waste center before taking it in to confirm that it accepts hazardous lithium-ion batteries. The Commission’s instruction is to “immediately remove the battery from the e-bike and dispose of the battery following local hazardous waste disposal procedures.”

What has Rad said about the warning?
Comments from Rad reproduced in the CPSC notice say the company’s Safe Shield and semi-integrated batteries are outside the agency’s statement. Rad also said third-party laboratories retested batteries during the investigation and that they passed those tests, and that it proposed solutions in good faith. These are Rad’s claims, not CPSC findings; the agency’s warning identifies the three model numbers listed above. The CPSC notice and company comments provide the attributed positions.
Engadget also reported that Rad filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December 2025 and said it could not afford a battery recall. That is reported business context; it does not explain the cause of the Huntington Beach fire.
