A Rad Power Bikes rider’s cinder-block battery enclosure is an untested personal idea, not a proven fire-containment method. For owners, the more urgent step is checking whether a battery matches the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s November 24, 2025 warning: if it does, CPSC says to stop using and remove it, then arrange hazardous-waste disposal.
What the rider’s cinder-block setup does—and does not—show
GeekWire reported on January 9, 2026, that Eric Stahl, a San Francisco owner of a Rad Runner Plus since 2021, posted a battery enclosure made from stacked, capped cinder blocks in a Rad Power Bikes forum. He described it as a low-cost attempt to contain a possible fire, and riders debated whether it would work.
Stahl told GeekWire: “What I put on Reddit is a cheap, DIY, common sense solution. It’s not tested. It’s not proven. I’m not an engineer or an expert. So everyone needs to proceed at their own risk.” Nothing in the reporting validates the arrangement as safe or effective. It should not be treated as a substitute for a battery warning, manufacturer instructions, or a proven containment solution.
GeekWire also reported that Rad Power Bikes disputed the CPSC’s characterization and declined to agree to a recall. That disagreement does not resolve or cancel the agency’s warning. The CPSC warning says the importer refused to agree to an acceptable recall; the agency also says it cannot offer replacement batteries or refunds to all consumers because of the company’s financial situation.

Which Rad Power Bikes batteries are covered by the CPSC warning?
The November 24, 2025 CPSC warning identifies three battery models: RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y, and HL-RP-S1304. CPSC says the batteries can “unexpectedly ignite and explode,” especially after the battery or harness has been exposed to water and debris. Some reported incidents happened while batteries were not charging and the products were not in use or were in storage.

Check the model number on the battery’s rear or back label. A bike’s name alone does not confirm that its battery is covered, and a listed bike may have a replacement battery with a different model number. CPSC reports 31 fires and 12 property-damage reports totaling approximately $734,500. Those are agency-reported incidents, not a calculation of any individual battery’s chance of failing.
What to do if your battery matches a listed model
- Stop using and remove it. If the rear or back label reads RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y, or HL-RP-S1304, follow CPSC’s direction to stop using the battery and remove it from the bike.
- Do not sell or give it away. CPSC says not to transfer a covered battery to another person.
- Call your local household hazardous-waste facility. Ask whether it accepts this battery and how to deliver it safely. If it does not, contact your municipality for further instructions.
- Keep it out of ordinary collection streams. CPSC says not to put the battery in household trash, general recycling, or ordinary store battery-collection boxes. Follow the local hazardous-waste authority’s instructions.

What about a replacement battery or another storage method?
CPSC’s Micromobility Information Center advises that a replacement or secondary battery should be tested and approved to work safely with the device, and confirmed suitable by the manufacturer. It also warns against packs modified or reworked by unqualified personnel, or made with repurposed or used cells. For a battery covered by a specific warning, follow that warning’s stop-use and disposal directions rather than seeking a replacement as a workaround.
The available reporting and agency guidance do not establish that cinder blocks, storage bags, fire blankets, or extinguishers will contain this battery hazard. There is no validated storage-product alternative to recommend here. Do not assume that a homemade enclosure makes a covered battery safe to keep or use.
