Rad Power Bikes Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on December 15, 2025, while seeking a sale and saying it would continue ordinary operations. That sale process has since concluded: Life Electric Vehicles Holdings (Life EV) announced that it completed a court-approved acquisition of the Rad Power Bikes brand, intellectual property, inventory and certain operating assets on March 5, 2026. The acquisition does not establish that every liability of the former company transferred to Life EV.
What happened to Rad Power Bikes?
The Seattle e-bike company filed a voluntary Chapter 11 petition in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Washington on December 15, 2025. The petition identifies the business as an electric-bike retailer, wholesaler and direct-to-consumer seller. The court petition and joint-administration filing identify the debtor and case.

Chapter 11 is a bankruptcy process that can allow a company to reorganize or pursue a sale under court supervision. In December, Rad said it intended to complete a sale within 45–60 days and keep operating in the ordinary course. “Rad Power Bikes filed for Chapter 11 protection as part of a process to complete a sale of the company within the next 45–60 days,” a Rad spokesperson said in a statement reported by GeekWire on December 16, 2025. That was the company’s plan at filing, not the final transaction description.
Who bought Rad Power Bikes?
Life EV was reported as the winning bidder at a January 2026 auction, with Retrospec, also identified as Xander Bicycle Corp., the backup bidder. At the time of GeekWire’s auction report, the winning bid still required court approval.

Life EV announced on March 5, 2026, that the court-approved acquisition had closed. Its announcement says the purchased assets included the Rad Power Bikes brand, intellectual property, inventory and certain operating assets, and that U.S. retail operations would continue under the Rad brand. Life EV’s announcement describes an asset acquisition; continued use of the Rad name does not, on its own, mean that Life EV assumed every debt or other liability of the former debtor.
How large was the bankruptcy?
The petition estimated assets at $10 million to $50 million and liabilities at $50 million to $100 million. GeekWire reported figures of approximately $32 million in assets and nearly $73 million in liabilities when covering the filing. Those figures are filing-era estimates, not a final accounting of what creditors will recover.

What does the acquisition mean for customers and warranties?
Life EV said it planned customer programs to honor certain warranties and gift cards under the purchase agreement. Its public announcement does not specify eligibility, covered models, purchase-date rules or how to submit a claim. The phrase “certain warranties” should not be read as a promise that every warranty issued by the former company remains valid or is now administered identically.

For an individual warranty, repair or gift-card question, contact the current Rad customer-support channel and ask whether the specific bike, purchase and claim qualify under the asset-sale terms. The available announcement does not establish a universal answer for older bikes or every open claim.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a safety warning dated November 24, 2025, concerning Rad lithium-ion battery models RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y and HL-RP-S1304. The agency associated them with these bikes: RadWagon 4, RadCity HS 4, RadRover High Step 5, RadCity Step Thru 3, RadRover Step Thru 1, RadRunner 2, RadRunner 1, RadRunner Plus and RadExpand 5. This is a warning about specified battery models, not a finding that every Rad bike or battery is affected.
- Check the model number printed on the battery and compare it with the numbers in the CPSC warning. Do not rely on the bike name alone.
- If the battery is one of the named models, CPSC says to remove it and stop using it immediately. Do not charge or use the named battery.
- Follow CPSC’s disposal advice: contact a local household hazardous-waste center before disposal. Do not put the battery in curbside recycling or a general battery-recycling bin, and do not sell or give it away.
CPSC reported 31 fire reports, including 12 reports of property damage totaling approximately $734,500, in its warning. Some reported fires occurred while a battery was not charging, an e-bike was not in use or a product was in storage; the fact that a battery is idle does not remove the need to follow the agency’s stop-use direction.

CPSC also reproduced Rad’s response that its Safe Shield batteries and semi-integrated batteries were not subject to the agency’s statement. That is Rad’s position as included by the regulator, not a substitute for checking the listed battery model numbers and the current CPSC notice.
