The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning owners to stop using Rad Power Bikes batteries labeled RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y, or HL-RP-S1304. Check the model number on the label at the back or rear of the battery; a bike model name alone does not establish that its battery is affected. If the label matches, remove the battery and arrange disposal through your local household hazardous-waste program—not regular trash or recycling.
Which Rad Power Bikes batteries are covered by the CPSC warning?
The CPSC issued its product safety warning on November 24, 2025. It names these three lithium-ion battery models:
- RP-1304
- RAD-S1304Y
- HL-RP-S1304
The agency says the batteries can unexpectedly ignite and explode, creating a fire hazard, particularly if the battery or its harness has been exposed to water and debris. The warning also notes that some reported fires happened when a battery was not charging, a bike was not in use, or a product was in storage. See the CPSC warning, number 26-118.
How do I check whether my Rad battery is affected?
Read the battery label
- Turn off the e-bike and locate the battery’s label on its back or rear.
- Read the battery model number on that label.
- Compare it with RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y, and HL-RP-S1304. If it matches, follow the CPSC’s stop-use and disposal instructions below.
The warning associates the named batteries with RadWagon 4, RadCity HS 4, RadRover High Step 5, RadCity Step Thru 3, RadRover Step Thru 1, RadRunner 2, RadRunner 1, RadRunner Plus, and RadExpand 5. CPSC also says affected batteries were sold as replacements. These associations are a reason to check, not proof that every battery fitted to every listed bike is covered: the battery model number is the decisive identifier in the warning.

The CPSC notice includes a company comment that Rad’s Safe Shield and semi-integrated batteries are not subject to this agency statement. If you are unsure what the label says or whether a battery falls within the warning, use the CPSC notice or contact the relevant local authorities rather than relying on the bike’s model name.
What should I do if the battery model matches?
- Stop using the battery immediately. Remove it from the e-bike; do not keep using it because it appears undamaged or because you can store or charge it carefully.
- Do not sell or give it away. The CPSC specifically says consumers should not pass an affected battery to someone else.
- Call your municipal household hazardous-waste collection center before taking it anywhere. Ask whether it accepts hazardous lithium-ion batteries and follow its handling and drop-off directions. If it does not accept them, ask your municipality where to take the battery.
Do not put the battery in household trash, curbside or general recycling, or used-battery collection boxes at retail or home-improvement stores. The CPSC’s instruction is to use local hazardous-waste procedures, not ordinary battery-recycling channels. Its warning says: “CPSC urges consumers to immediately remove the battery from the e-bike and dispose of the battery following local hazardous waste disposal procedures.”

What has the CPSC reported, and why is this a warning rather than an agreed recall?
The CPSC reports 31 fires involving the batteries and 12 property-damage reports totaling approximately $734,500. The agency says it issued a public health and safety finding to expedite a public warning. It identifies Rad Power Bikes Inc. of Seattle as the importer and says the company cited its financial condition as preventing it from offering replacements or refunds to all affected consumers.
The CPSC states that Rad refused to agree to an acceptable recall. For that reason, describe this as a CPSC product safety warning, not as a recall agreed to by Rad. The warning reports historical sale prices of about $550 for replacement batteries and $1,500–$2,000 for bikes sold with the batteries; those figures are not current prices.

What does Rad Power Bikes say?
In a response dated November 24, 2025, Rad said it strongly disagrees with the CPSC’s characterization of certain batteries as defective or unsafe. The company said its batteries met or exceeded UL-2271 and UL-2849 standards and that independent laboratories had tested them, including during the CPSC investigation. Rad’s published statement said: “Rad Power Bikes firmly stands behind our batteries and our reputation as leaders in the ebike industry, and strongly disagrees with the CPSC’s characterization of certain Rad batteries as defective or unsafe.” These are the company’s claims; they do not resolve the disagreement or change the CPSC’s instructions to consumers.

Rad reported that Life EV completed an asset acquisition on March 5, 2026. Rad’s purchase terms identified a one-time Battery Upgrade Program as in place in June 2026, but the available terms do not establish whether batteries named in the CPSC warning qualify, whether a participant is eligible, or whether inventory is available. Do not treat the program as a remedy for a warned battery unless the current terms expressly confirm that coverage.
