R35 GT-R vs. R34 Skyline GT-R: Why the R35 May Never Match Its Value

A recent Australian auction sample shows higher average prices for R34 Skyline GT-Rs than R35 GT-Rs. Here’s what the figures establish—and what they cannot predict.

In one recent Australian recorded-auction sample, R34 Skyline GT-Rs averaged about twice the price of R35 GT-Rs. That supports the view that the R34 has a stronger market position today, but it cannot prove the R35 will never catch up: the data cover one market and a limited number of sales, and future collector values are uncertain.

How much more did R34 GT-Rs sell for than R35 GT-Rs?

AutoMarkets’ analysis, updated September 16, 2026, records 24 Australian R34 GT-R auction sales averaging A$281,973, compared with 25 R35 GT-R sales averaging A$138,888. The R34 average is just over twice the R35 average in that sample. These are completed-sale averages, not asking prices or universal appraisals. AutoMarkets’ recorded-sale analysis covers 87 sales across four generations.

Generation Recorded Australian auction sales Average sale price Recorded sale range
R34 Skyline GT-R 24 A$281,973 A$144,000–646,100
R35 GT-R 25 A$138,888 A$68,000–310,000

The wide ranges show why a generation-level average can mislead when judging a particular car. Variant, originality, condition, kilometres and documented history all affect price; AutoMarkets cautions that repairs to a poor example can cost more than the apparent discount. Compare like with like, including the sale date and currency, rather than treating the badge alone as a valuation.

Why does the R34 command a premium?

It is the final Skyline GT-R

Nissan launched the R35 in 2007 as the GT-R, separate from the Skyline name, after the R34 Skyline GT-R. That gives the R34 a distinct place in the model’s history: it is the final generation to carry the Skyline GT-R identity. Nissan’s heritage overview describes the transition.

The reported production totals favor relative scarcity

Nissan says approximately 48,000 R35 GT-Rs were produced over the model’s 18-year run. The specialist Skyline GT-R Registry reports 11,577 R34 GT-Rs; that is registry data, not a Nissan-published count. The difference is consistent with the R34 being less numerous, but production totals alone do not establish why prices differ or how they will move.

Variant and provenance can outweigh the generation comparison

An individual car’s trim, originality, condition, mileage and history can move it substantially within the broad ranges above. A well-documented, original example is not directly comparable with a modified or poorly maintained one simply because both are R34s or both are R35s. The same standard should apply to either generation.

Will an R35 ever be worth as much as an R34?

No available evidence can answer that as a certainty. The Australian sample shows a current gap in its recorded sales, while the production and history facts offer plausible context for why buyers may favor the R34. They do not prove that those factors caused the gap, nor do they establish a permanent ceiling for the R35. This sample cannot be generalized to the United States, Japan or the United Kingdom, and a future comparison would need equivalent sales segmented by variant and condition.

Nissan’s 2025 announcement marked the end of R35 production after 18 years, with approximately 48,000 cars built. Nissan stated: “After 18 years, Nissan today commemorates the end of production for the R35 GT‑R, as assembly for the Japan domestic market – the final sales region for the model – concludes.” The end of production makes the R35 a finite series; it does not, by itself, show that its value will rise to the R34’s level. Nissan Global Newsroom’s announcement is the company’s statement on the production conclusion.

Does the U.S. 25-year rule affect R34 prices?

It can affect import eligibility for U.S. federal vehicle safety standards, but it is not a general guarantee that an imported car can be registered or driven. NHTSA says the exemption for vehicles at least 25 years old runs from the vehicle’s manufacture date, not simply its model year. The agency’s interpretation states: “The 25-year period runs from the date of the vehicles manufacture.” Check the actual manufacture date for the specific vehicle. NHTSA’s import guidance concerns federal safety requirements; it does not settle emissions, customs, state title or registration requirements.

How to compare two specific cars

  1. Match the variant. Compare the same or genuinely comparable trim rather than using a generation-wide average as the price of every car.
  2. Assess originality and condition. Record modifications, wear and any needed repairs; a low asking price may not represent a lower total cost.
  3. Check mileage and documentation. Compare kilometres alongside service, ownership and provenance records.
  4. Use comparable transactions. Keep market, currency, sale date and sale type consistent. Distinguish completed auction sales from asking prices.
  5. Consider import rules separately. For a U.S. import, establish the manufacture date and check applicable federal, emissions, customs and state requirements rather than relying on the 25-year safety exemption alone.

Nissan’s U.S. release for 2024 models listed a $131,090 starting MSRP for the GT-R Skyline Edition and $151,090 for the T-spec Takumi Edition. Those are new-car MSRP figures from Nissan’s 2023 release, not resale values and not directly comparable with the 2026 Australian auction averages. Nissan USA’s 2024 GT-R pricing release provides that new-car context.
