How to verify a car before comparing it
- Match the model year and trim. Use the exact year and trim you are considering; different trims and powertrains may have different fuel-economy ratings.
- Check combined mpg on FuelEconomy.gov. EPA directs consumers there to compare vehicles. Confirm the exact listing rather than carrying a figure over from another trim or year.
- Find a 0–60 mph result for the same configuration. Record whether the time is a manufacturer claim or an independent test, and do not treat results from different powertrains as interchangeable.
- Compare like with like. Keep model year, trim, powertrain, and the source of each acceleration result attached to the numbers. EPA combined fuel economy is a different measure from fleet-level trend estimates.
What EPA data can—and cannot—tell you
EPA test-car data draws on testing at its National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory and test data submitted by manufacturers. EPA publishes model-year datasets, including 2025 and 2026 files.
