Jaguar Land Rover announced a run of up to 150 vehicles; the figure was a production limit, not confirmation that all 150 were built. The specifications and market terms below are those published in 2018, not confirmation of present-day availability.
What was the Defender Works V8 70th Edition?
It was an anniversary and collector edition of the classic Land Rover Defender, announced by Jaguar Land Rover on 17 January 2018. The anniversary marked 70 years of the Land Rover marque—not 70 years of a single Defender model. The special vehicles were selected and re-engineered by Land Rover Classic.
The announcement capped a V8 history that JLR traced to the Series III Stage 1 V8, introduced in 1979 with a 3.5-litre Rover V8. The company also cited V8 One Ten and Ninety models, North American Specification Defender 90 and 110 models from 1992, and the limited Defender 90 50th Anniversary edition in 1998. JLR described the Works V8 as the first official V8-powered Defender introduced since that 1998 edition.
How powerful was the 70th anniversary Defender?
JLR specified a naturally aspirated petrol V8 with a displacement of 4,999 cc, described in its announcement as 5.0 litres. Its stated output was 405 PS at 6,000 rpm and 515 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm. These are manufacturer-published figures, not independent test results.

The announcement gave a 0–60 mph time of 5.6 seconds and a maximum speed of 106 mph. Land Rover Classic’s official page repeats the 5.6-second acceleration figure specifically for the 90 Station Wagon. The 2018 announcement does not attach that body-style qualifier to the figure, so it is safest to identify the 90 Station Wagon when citing the more specific official-page claim.
What made the 2018 Works V8 different?
Automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive hardware
The V8 was paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission with sport mode. JLR also listed all-wheel drive, a two-speed transfer box, heavy-duty front and rear differentials, and a torque-biasing centre differential.

Chassis, brakes and tires
The edition received upgraded brakes and a handling kit with revised springs, dampers and anti-roll bars. Its specified wheels were 18-inch diamond-turned Sawtooth alloys, fitted with 265/65 R18 all-terrain tires. That is the size stated for this edition; owners should check the exact vehicle and wheel fitment before selecting replacement tires.
How many were announced, and where was it offered?
JLR announced a run of up to 150 specially selected and re-engineered Defenders. “Up to” describes the announced maximum, not a verified final production or delivery total.

In its 2018 release, JLR said the vehicles were available in the United Kingdom and in MENA markets on a personal-import basis. For Europe, the release described individual imports subject to rules governing vehicle-conversion imports. Those were historical market terms, not current sales information or legal advice. The announcement and the current information cited here do not establish whether a Works V8 can be ordered now or what examples are currently for sale. Land Rover Classic was named in the announcement as the inquiry route for prospective clients; its official page describes its conversion expertise.
