Qnovo says it is piloting a software application that uses data from an electric vehicle’s battery history to assess its condition, identify signs associated with accelerated aging or hidden defects, and project likely future aging. The company describes residual value as another output. The pilot is a proposed assessment tool—not the EU battery passport itself, and not a component that EU law requires.
What Qnovo says its Battery Genome application does
In an announcement dated 24 September 2026, Qnovo described a software application built on its Battery Genome technology. It says the application analyzes electrochemical information recorded in the vehicle, including charging behavior, operating history, environmental exposure and variation between cells. Qnovo says this information can help identify markers associated with accelerated aging or hidden defects and support projections of how a battery may age. The company also says the application produces a residual-value assessment. These are intended capabilities described by Qnovo, not independently verified pilot results. Qnovo’s announcement says batteries of the same age and mileage can differ because of how and where they were used and variation between cells.

The stated audience is business-to-business: automakers, fleet operators and insurers. Qnovo presents the application as an extension of a software stack that includes Adaptive Fast Charging and Health and Safety Diagnostics. It is not described as a retail battery tester or a consumer app.

How the application relates to the EU battery passport
Under Article 77 of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, a battery passport is required from 18 February 2027 for each light means of transport (LMT) battery, industrial battery with a capacity greater than 2 kWh, and electric-vehicle (EV) battery placed on the market or put into service. The passport is an electronic record containing model-related and individual-battery information, including information resulting from use, as set out in the regulation and Annex XIII.

The regulation defines access categories; it does not make all passport information freely available to everyone. Nor does Article 77 name Qnovo’s application as a required passport component or endorse it. Qnovo’s announcement does not establish that its application is itself a passport, that it has regulatory approval, or that its outputs map to specific Annex XIII fields. The legal obligation is the passport; the Qnovo application is presented as a possible way to add battery-condition assessment.
What the pilot announcement does—and does not—establish
The announcement describes what Qnovo intends the application to assess, but does not report pilot performance. It does not name participating automakers, state how many batteries are being evaluated, provide a pilot schedule or commercial launch date, disclose pricing, or publish a validation method, comparison group or quantified result. No independent validation is reported in the announcement.

Qnovo’s separate solutions and services page reports 98.7% accuracy in identifying batteries with health issues. That company-reported figure concerns broader software capabilities; the page does not establish it as the accuracy of this passport application or as a result of this pilot. It should not be treated as a pilot result.
For now, the practical distinction is between a regulated record and an assessment tool: the passport is required for the covered battery categories, while Qnovo says its software may analyze richer in-vehicle data to inform condition and value assessments. Whether the pilot proves useful for those decisions, or how any output would connect to passport information, has not been disclosed.
