The 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix is already complete: George Russell won in Baku on September 26. Qatar and Abu Dhabi, however, remained on Formula 1’s calendar as of October 4 and had not been announced as cancelled. At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend, team representatives said a decision was expected by mid-October; Imola was mentioned as a contingency, not a confirmed replacement.
Will the Qatar and Abu Dhabi F1 races be cancelled?
There was no definitive cancellation announcement as of October 4, 2026. Formula 1’s calendar still listed the Qatar Grand Prix at Lusail for November 27–29 and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina for December 4–6. In the FIA’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix press conference transcript, team representatives said both races remained scheduled and identified mid-October as the final decision point. The races were therefore still on the calendar but under review; being listed did not settle the pending decision.

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu said, “Yes, I believe that Stefano was targeting to tell us in mid-October, right?” Audi team principal Mattia Binotto added, “As we discussed during the F1 Commission last Monday, mid-October is the last call for such a decision.” These remarks were made during the Azerbaijan weekend and describe the expected timing, not a final outcome. Why is Azerbaijan included in the cancellation discussion?
Azerbaijan is no longer a future race at risk: the Baku round took place on September 26. Its date had changed from Sunday, September 27, to Saturday, September 26, 2026, following a request from the Azerbaijani promoter and government stakeholders to accommodate a national day. The FIA’s June 30, 2025 announcement said the change remained subject to final approval by the World Motor Sport Council. The FIA’s calendar update explains the date change.
Formula 1 also announced in September 2025 that Azerbaijan would remain on the calendar through 2030 inclusive. That is contract context, not a guarantee that any particular race will take place regardless of circumstances. Formula 1’s announcement gives the contract end year.

Could Imola replace a cancelled race?
Imola was described as being on standby, not as a confirmed replacement. Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali had said in a July 29 interview that Qatar and Abu Dhabi were “confirmed” for the moment, while also noting a later decision point and the possibility of a European season finale if conditions did not clear. His use of “for us today” reflected the status in July, not a final October decision. The later FIA transcript is the relevant source for the mid-October deadline and Imola contingency. How do the April Bahrain and Saudi Arabia changes fit in?
They are a separate calendar development, not proof that Qatar or Abu Dhabi would also be cancelled. Formula 1 and the FIA said on March 14 that the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix would not take place in April because of the ongoing Middle East situation, and that no April replacement races had been organized. The live calendar later listed the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia at Sepang for October 2–4; that was not the April Sakhir event. The Associated Press noted that the March announcement did not explicitly call the races “cancelled” or “postponed.” Read the Associated Press report on the April decision.

What should fans do while the decision is pending?
- Check Formula 1’s official calendar for the published schedule and any subsequent updates.
- For tickets, flights, accommodation or insurance, check the terms from the original seller or provider. The available announcements do not establish event-specific refund or reimbursement rules.
- Treat Imola as a contingency unless Formula 1 or the FIA confirms a replacement and publishes its details.
