What is Punjab’s Green Policing Unit?
The Green Policing Unit is a Punjab police initiative using electric vehicles for traffic patrol and policing. Radio Pakistan described its inauguration as the start of electric-vehicle police patrolling in Pakistan. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the unit and inspected and drove a patrol vehicle. Dunya News quoted her describing it as “the vision of clean air and good governance.”
Where will the electric patrol vehicles operate?
Lahore was the initial deployment location named in launch coverage. The chief minister directed officials to increase the electric fleet gradually and extend the unit to other districts in phases. That was an announced direction; the launch reports do not establish whether expansion occurred or when.
The BYD model and number of vehicles delivered were not specified in the launch reporting. Nor do the available reports establish the unit’s current deployment status.

What range and charging time were reported?
Officials briefed the chief minister that the vehicles could travel 410 kilometres on one charge and charge from 30% to 80% in about 30 minutes, according to Radio Pakistan and Dunya News. These are launch-briefing claims, not independently tested results. The reporting does not name the BYD model or provide the test conditions, so the figures should not be treated as a verified real-world patrol range or charging performance.

Officials told reporters that 103 conventional patrol vehicles consume about 28,000 litres of fuel per month, at a stated cost of Rs7.42 million, and estimated that each electric vehicle would save about 4,500 litres of fuel annually. Dunya News and Business Recorder reported these figures from the launch briefing. The reports give no calculation method and do not establish that these savings have been realized.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif was quoted by Dunya News saying EV use would reduce fuel costs and result in “zero carbon emissions.” That is her stated expectation, not an independent lifecycle-emissions assessment. The launch coverage does not provide measured emissions reductions.

Its announcement describes an e-bike squad and environmental enforcement teams; it is not the Green Policing Unit inaugurated in January 2026.
